This is the ASTM standard number (F2413) and the year of issuance (-11). This indicates the impact rating of the shoe. This indicates any additional features the shoe contains. Midsole Midsoles are the layers of material that sit between the insole and the shoe s sole. They are used for shock absorption and have added cushion for comfort. Shank Shanks are the structural components of your boot or shoe that runs right underneath your foot s arch. The shank is what supports the foot and helps to maintain the shoe structure. Outsole Outsoles are the outermost layer of the boot or shoe. They provide additional traction, cushion, and durability. Boots with internal metatarsal guards are constructed with thinner and more flexible materials. The guard is inserted into the boot right underneath the tongue and laces. Often it is an added piece that is combined with the protective toe cap. External Metatarsal guard External metatarsal guards use an impact resistant material that sits on top of the entire boot and covers the laces. External met guards are often covered by leather or rubber for added protection. Typically external metatarsal guards tend to be stiffer, more rigid, and less flexible. Met Guards Along with your toes, the metatarsal bones of your foot are also vulnerable to injury. There is almost no additional flesh or fat covering these bones to protect them from impact. Met guards can protect up to 80-90% of the foot. There are two distinct types of metatarsal guards. Both types meet the ASTM 2413-11 MT/75 safety standard.
