LUCA BRACALI About me Luca Bracali has travelled 138 countries, published 10 books and won 8 International Photo contests. Since 2008 he is a member of the APECS (Association of Polar Early Career Scientists) thanks to his media and scientific contributions related to the environment. In 2009 he was the only reporter to have reached the geographic North Pole by skiing. In 2010 he made his debut in the world of fine-art photography and his photos are shown in author exhibitions, in museums and galleries, in Roma, Sofia, Kiev, Copenhagen, Montreal and New York. Since 2011 he has been working as Director of the Italian Rai TV and signed 4 stories for National Geographic. day 1: ARRIVAL IN ICELAND Arrivo presso l aeroporto internazionale di Keflavik, ritiro del veicolo a noleggio e trasferimento in hotel a Reykjavik. day 2: THINGVELLIR NATIONAL PARK GEYSER NATURE RESERVE - GULLFOSS FALLS, SELJALANDSFOSS AND SKÓGAFOSS - VIK - KIRKJUBAEJARKLAUSTUR Departure for the Thingvellir National Park (the assembly field), a site of historical, cultural, and geological importance. It lies in a rift valley that marks the crest of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and the boundary between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. To its south lies Þingvallavatn, the largest natural lake in Iceland. We will make a pleasant walk in the midst of the tectonic plates to the site of the oldest parliament in the world: the Althing (930 A.D.). We will continue to the Geysir Natural Reserve, where the geyser Strokkur erupts once every 6 10 minutes up to 30 m high. In this area, lies the Great Geyser (now inactive), from which it is named the phenomenon. Later we will visit the Gullfoss waterfalls (Golden Waterfall), Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss (a 60m high fall). EVERY DAY HUNTING FOR THE NORTHERN LIGHTS (IN GOOD WEATHER CONDITIONS)
day 3: VATNAJOKULL GLACIER - SKAFTAFELL NATIONAL PARK GLACIAL LAGOON JÖKULSÁRLÓN - KIRKJUBÆJARKLAUSTUR We will cross the Skeidararsandur desert where, in 1996 millions of cubic meters of ice mixed with water and volcanic ash (jokullhlaup) poured, following the sub-glacial eruption of the Grimsvotn volcano. We will visit the Vatnajokull (8,300 sqkm), the largest glacier in Europe, and enter the Skaftafell National Park where we will admire the glacier in all its power. We will continue along the coast heading to the spectacular Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon. Chance of spotting seals. Finally we will head to the black beach where the icebergs that come from the lagoon are beached by the tide, creating a unique landscape rich in charm. day 4: SOUTH COAST - DYRHÓLAEY NATURAL RESERVE - HVERAGERDI BORGARNES - PENINSULA OF SNAEFELLSNES We will drive along the south coast where we can visit the natural reserve of Dyrholaey, where we will admire a breathtaking view and the beautiful black beach. We will continue to the town of Hveragerdi famous for its crops in greenhouses using the heat of the subsoil. After passing the town of Borgarnes, we will enter the Peninsula of Snaefellsnnes. At the end of the Peninsula, we will admire the volcano-glacier Snaefellsjokull (1,446 above sea level), famous for being the entry route of the Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne. Snaefellsjokull is considered by fans of esotericism, one of the seven major energy centers of the World. EVERY DAY HUNTING FOR THE NORTHERN LIGHTS (IN GOOD WEATHER CONDITIONS)
day 5: PENINSULA OF SNAEFELLSNES REYKJAVIK The whole day is dedicated to the visit of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula and the Snaefellsjokull National Park. The park was established by the Icelandic government on the 28 June 2001 with the aim to preserve the flora and fauna. The Peninsula is characterized by bizarre rock shape formations due to the particular cooling of the lava. The peninsula is also famous for its black and golden beaches, the coasts overlooking the sea from which we can spot seals, sea birds and admire breath taking views. day 6: RETURN TO ITALY/ EXTENSION TO THE NORTH AKUREYRI- LAKE MYVATN NATURAL RESERVE Program for those who DO NOT add the extension to the north: Transfer to the International airport of Keflavik by flybus plus and return to Italy. PROGRAM FOR THOSE WHO ADD THE EXTENSION TO THE NORTH: Transfer to the Reykjavik domestic airport, delivery of the rental vehicle and domestic flight to Akureyri. Collect of the rental vehicle. After fifty kilometers first stop to visit the charming waterfall of Godafoss (Waterfall of the Gods). Its original horseshoe shape makes it different and unique among all waterfalls in Iceland. We will continue heading to the Lake Myvatn natural reserve, where we will visit the boiling mud pools of Namaskard and the pseudo craters Skutustadir. We will cross the Mid-Atlantic Ridge going from the European plate in the one of the North America. This is a special area for bird watching where over 200 bird species nest (only fifteen are ducks). In the evening we will relax in the hot springs of the Myvatn Nature Bath spa. EVERY DAY HUNTING FOR THE NORTHERN LIGHTS (IN GOOD WEATHER CONDITIONS)
day 7: NATURAL RESERVE MYVATIN LAKE The whole day is dedicated to the discovery of the Lake Myvatn area. day 8: NATURAL RESERVE MYVATIN LAKE AKUREYRI REYKJAVIK The whole day is dedicated to the discovery of the Lake Myvatn area. In the evening we will return to Akureyri, we will deliver the rental vehicle and then we will return to Reykjavik on a domestic flight. day 9: RETURN FLIGHT TO ITALY Transfer to the International airport of Keflavik by flybus plus and return to Italy.
