Chinook District Camporee 2014 Leaders Packet

Chinook District Camporee, 2014 The theme for the Chinook District Camporee 2014 is Ye Olde Camporee. scheduled for May 2, 3, and 4, 2014 at Camp Lewis, outside of Battleground, WA. Our Camporee is Cost for those attending Camporee is $10. Units can begin check in at Camporee no sooner than 5pm on May 2 nd. Units will be assigned to campsites by Camporee staff, and more than one unit may share a campsite. Some Adirondacks are available, but units may be required to stay in tents. In addition to the 10 Scout Essentials and full uniform, Scouts will need to bring work clothes, work gloves, tents, sleeping bags, rope, food and a means of preparing it for their stay. There will be no meals provided by Camporee staff. Patrols need to be uniquely identified by name and have a flag and yell to demonstrate at each of the events. Units will be required to provide a roster of all Scouts and Scouters participating from their unit. The standard BSA medical forms are required at registration for all campers. The medical forms will be used to make sure everyone on your roster is accounted for, but will not be kept by camporee staff. Water is supplied by two wells. One is located at the north end of camp by the small meadow, and one is located at the south end of camp by the lower meadow. There is a Kybo/Latrine located within a short walking distance of every campsite. Some campsites are located within view of the Lewis River. No contact with the river, or any other body of water, is permitted. Scouts entering the river or other bodies of water WILL be sent home. Parking is available on site, with some over-flow parking at the top of the hill. Due to the limited space, please be considerate and bring only what is necessary as there may not be room for vehicles with trailers. Fires are not permitted outside established fire pits, with the exception of portable, above ground fire pits that are tall enough not to scorch the grass beneath them. If a unit uses portable, above ground fire pits, there is to be absolutely NO ASH left behind.

EVENTS All events are round-robin events. Points accumulate for each event with the top three units earning ribbons for their flags. Blackpowder* Step up to the firing line and take your best shot. Each scout shoots one shot and scores 1 point for their Patrol/Troop for each hit on the target. Webelos attending Camporee are not, per BSA rules, allowed to fire blackpowder but may be at the range for a demonstration. First Aid Your party has an injured member. Use your scout first aid skills to stabilize your patient and move them around the obstacle course on a field expedient stretcher. Points will be deducted for every incorrect first aid procedure (-1 point for missed procedure) or dropping your patient (-2 points for each drop). The fastest unit receives 10 points, the second fastest 8 points, and the third fastest 6 points. All other units earn 4 points. Fire Building Use your camping skills to start a fire using primitive methods. Bow-drills, hand-drills, fire-pistons, as well as flint and steel are a few examples. The use of matches, lighters, liquid fuels or any modern means is not allowed. The fastest unit receives 10 points, the second fastest 8 points, and the third fastest 6 points. All other units earn 4 points. Archery* Each person in the Patrol/Troop will fire one arrow. Total points received will be the average score of all hits on the target (points scored divided by participants = total points received). Orienteering Follow and correctly locate 5 places using your compass. One point scored for each correct location. The fastest unit finding all five correct locations receives 5 bonus points, the second fastest 4 bonus points, and the third fastest 3 bonus points. All other units earn 1 bonus point. Plague Removal Use your leadership abilities to move a bucket of bubonic plague from a populated area to a safe zone. This event will be run twice, once blindfolded. The fastest unit receives 10 points, the second fastest 8 points, and the third fastest 6 points. All other units earn 4 points. 2 points will be deducted for every spill. Pioneering Use your knowledge of ropes and lashing to build a catapult or trebuchet. Your siege engine can be no taller than 4 feet at its tallest point and must be constructed at the competition using only primitive means. This is the only competition where all units compete at the same time. The unit that can launch a tennis ball the furthest earns 10 points. Second place earns 8 points. Third place earns 6 points. All other units earn 4 points. *Blackpowder and Archery are subject to availability of qualified staff.
