Sustainability in the Caribbean enews 2 of 7 Environmental Quality Awards! Recovery in the US May 23, 2013 10:00 am - 5:00 pm CLCC Workshop: Conservation Science and Sustainable Landscapes Congratulations to PRRP members and everyone who participated in SanSe Recicla! The EPA has announced SanSe Recicla as the winner of this year's Environmental Quality Award in the category of environmental group, business, or local agency. SanSe Recicla was created to improve recycling at the San Sebastian Festival, the largest festival in Puerto Rico. With the help of 200 volunteers from the San Juan Bay Estuary Program and the Sierra Club, SanSe Recicla set up 10 recycling stations in Old San Juan. Altogether, nearly 70 tons of recyclables, more than double the previous year, were collected and recycled. They also recovered 1500 gallons of oil. May 30, 2013 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm VIRP Panel at Green Thursdays Series Event July 9-10, 2013 9:30 am - 5:00 pm Various EFC Workshops for Drinking Water Systems Partners The EPA has announced the Virgin Islands Montessori School and International Academy as the winner of this year's Environmental Quality Award in the category of environmental education. The Virgin Islands Montessori School and International Academy has been a leader in protecting the environment. Since 2008, the school has installed solar systems that have decreased its electric bill from $84,000 a year to $0. It has also established a student-run recycling program and made teaching about sustainable energy alternatives part of its curriculum. The school is also actively involved with the VIRP Organics Internship Program. Learn more at the PRRP News Page and VIRP News Page. Sustainability in the Caribbean enews 3 of 7 The EFC is facilitating the VIRP Organics Internship Program, comprised of 17 interns who have received training on organics management and composting methods, and who are delivering composting programs to schools and local community sites across the islands of St. Croix, St. John and St. Thomas. A group of 5 ambitious interns recently met at Camp Umoja at Mandahl Bay on St. Thomas to construct 2 compost tumblers and will be constructing 2 more in the coming weeks. The interns will utilize the tumblers for their composting projects and intend to provide them for the University of the Virgin Islands Green Technology Center, the Montessori School and International Academy, as well as the Ivana Eudora Kean High School. Program participants will work with their chosen sites to establish more sustainable organics management plans, as well as teach other students, educators, and staff about composting. They will work on these projects until the end of May and their Organics Internship Graduation Ceremony will take place in early June. To learn more about the internship program and other VIRP projects visit the USVI Organics Facebook page or at virecycles.com. New Sustainability Club at the UVI St. Thomas Campus Marsha Laurencin, an Organics Intern, has spearheaded the new Sustainability Club at the UVI- St. Thomas Campus. The club seeks to promote waste reduction on campus and locally through composting, recycling, as well as through education and outreach initiatives.
