Southern Nevada Chapter, Inc. #2735 J A N U A R Y 2 0 0 8 From the Director s Saddle. As I sit down to write my first Director s Saddle, I look back on my years as a member of our Chapter. I joined the Chapter in January 2003, along with my husband Ducky. Since that time, we have logged many miles of some of the best riding ever. I did not grow up around motorcycles and never imagined the sights, sounds and smells of traveling the open road. What a shame to have missed that for all of those years. During this time we have also enjoyed the friendship and company of so many people. Whether it is a day ride to Gunlock, an overnighter to San Diego or a Meet & Eat at Red Robin, we have always had fun, laughter and a good time. Ducky and I have always said that the most fun that we have is during an overnight trip. We get to ride with a great group, enjoy their company during meals, sit around in the evening and get to know people better and then ride home with them on the next day. During this next year we have the following overnighters tentatively planned: Jan 26-27 - Yuma, AZ Feb 16-18 - San Diego, CA March 8-10 - Pismo, CA May 24-26 - North Rim Grand Canyon June 20-22 - Sequoia area, CA October 11-13 - Sedona, AZ We also will be looking into an overnighter to take a ride on the Wine Train in Ely, NV in August and the December Parade of Lights in Lake Havasu, AZ. I look forward to 2008 being a year filled with rides, friendships and good times and hope that you will come out and join us. I cannot write this article without thanking everyone for the love, prayers, thoughts and support that has been shown to us during the past few weeks. As most of you know, we were involved in an accident on December 2 nd. We feel so fortunate to have this family of friends who were there for us when we needed them. We do not know how long it will be before Ducky is back up on two wheels and he says no to riding two-up with me, so.. Karen S.N. Editor s Note Happy New Year to all! I hope you enjoyed the holidays and found quality time with family and friends. This is my first newsletter as editor for 2008, so for those of you that don t know me, allow me to introduce myself. I ve been riding since September of 2006. What started as a small interest in learning to ride, has now become a great love for me. I ride a 98 Sportster XL Custom 1200, which I bought from my mom and I absolutely love it! It s so much fun and I have met so many wonderful people in the HOG Chapter. Thank you to all who have welcomed me over the past year and a half. Passing the torch. Now with regards to the newsletter, I would like to compliment Rita Hart for doing such a fabulous job over the past year. I hope that I can live up to her Newsletter standards. Rita, thanks for all the help that you provided and will provide as I start this journey in 2008. Your Editor Michelle Nieto Kindred Spirit Group Ride Home (August 2008) Farewell from the Secretary/ Membership. Would you be interested in taking a couple of weeks and riding to Milwaukee, Wisconsin for Harley- Davidson s 105th and Harley Owner s Group 25th celebrations? Would you like to travel with other kindred spirits in a group ride? Can you see yourself enjoying sight seeing adventures along the way? Do you think you might have a good time at the festivities planned at a couple of Harley-Davidson Dealerships along the way? If you answered yes to these questions, then you will want to attend our get-together where we ll plan our kindred spirit group ride and discuss just how exciting this trip to Milwaukee will be. This meeting will be at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, January 24, 2008 at The Coachman s Inn, 3240 S. Eastern Ave. (just north of Desert Inn Road). Contact Michael Pence, 395-8282. PAGE 2 Well, it s been an interesting couple of years but its time to pass the torch. I have enjoyed being your Secretary/Membership Officer. It has been trying and frustrating at times, getting the new Biker Rewards program up and running; and learning the ins and outs of the database. But enjoyable for me and I hope you the members as well with the general day-to-day questions. I have truly loved every minute. Thank you one and all for your patience and support. I hope that you give the same to Lana as she takes over the duties. Be safe my friends and remember have fun!!! Love and seasons greetings to all. Leslie Lambeth, Secretary/Membership

Be sure to visit our online PHOTO GALLERY at http://snhoglv.com/gallery Photographs are such a great way to remember events in our lives. All you have to do is browse the gallery for a few minutes and anyone will quickly realize we ride and have fun all year round! Although Kenn Wynn and myself are the "photographers" for the chapter, we are obviously not the only ones who take pictures at our events. If you have photos you'd like to submit, please send them to photos@snhoglv.com. Be sure to include the date and Event the photos were taken and any other description you'd like included. I'll also be happy to post your name crediting you with the photo's you've taken. Southern Nevada H.O.G. Christmas Party On Saturday December 15, 2007, the Chapter had its annual Christmas party at the Golden Nugget Hotel. The festivities started at 6:00 p.m. with a cocktail hour. It was especially good to see Ducky and Sharon Silva, even though they were both in wheelchairs. We re happy to see both of them recovering from their recent mishaps. The cocktail hour was an opportunity to talk with old friends and make new friends, reminiscing about the last year s rides, and the rides to come. There were plenty of photographers snapping pictures, the least incriminating of which are posted on the H.O.G. website. After supper, Kevin gave out prizes to all of the Chapter members. There were shot glasses, key chains, Christmas ornaments, cleaning supplies and many other Harley-Davidson items. The dealership donated five special prizes (two bracelets, two rings and a mantel clock) that were raffled off as well as some very nice prized donated by some of the members. These included two pewter motorcycles of the 1980 s, and a complete car detail package. After the prizes were given out, the DJ fired up the music, and everyone danced until dawn, or thereabouts. All in all, everyone had a great time. We cannot wait until next year and another great party. Until then, Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night. P.S. Have a Happy New Year, good rides and keep the rubber side down. Clark and Janine Patrick, Activities Officers After a few drinks, we were ushered into the main reception room for supper. The staff at the Golden Nugget outdid themselves with the supper buffet. There was a wide range of salads, sides and entrees. There was plenty of everything and it was all very good. The unofficial motto of the Chapter, ride to eat, eat to ride, was well served. The only confusion was regarding the dessert tables, one of which was cleverly hidden, and took a while to be found. December 2007 General Membership Meeting Minutes for SNHOG The December 2007, General Membership Meeting for SNHOG was held on December 11, 2007 at Las Vegas Harley-Davidson. Our Director Kevin Pachtinger opened the meeting. He welcomed everyone and asked members to greet someone new to the chapter. Kevin Pachtinger was then presented a plaque of appreciation on behalf of the dealership. Kevin then informed us of Ashley Furniture special sale for HOG members on Friday December 14th, and he discussed our annual Christmas Party that would be held on December 15th, 6:00 PM, at the Golden Nugget. We then welcomed and introduced New Members, took their photos, and explained the ropes and different color meaning. Our message board is up and running but you must be a current member to access. We also have new Loyalty Rewards Cards from the Dealership. He presented 2007 officers with plaques, which included Road Captains, Ambassadors, Discretionary Officers and Primary officers, and then introduced Karen Heriford, as our new 2008 Director. From the Road Captains... Welcome Hogsters to 2008. I hope everybody had a great Holiday Season. By now you may have heard that I have been chosen as Lead Road Captain for 2008. Many of the Road Captains from 2007 will again be Road Captains in 2008. That will make my job a lot easier. I would like to thank all the Road Captains for the hard work they do training, planning the routes for rides, ensuring the safety and enjoyment of our members on rides. What a great year 2007 was. We started with our annual Hair of the Hog ride and ended with our charity ride to the Nevada Blind Children's Foundation. Between those rides there were overnighters, breakfast rides, lunch rides, dinner rides, ice cream rides, chapter poker runs, Road Captain Choices, top gun, and meet-n-greets. If you think 2007 was great, 2008 will be even better. I attended the 2008 planning meeting and there are some great rides planned for the upcoming year. We will have some excellent overnighters, rides to some new places as well as some of the chapter s favorite rides. Our first overnighter will be to Yuma. In Yuma we will be staying at a different motel than in past years, it sounds like a really nice place. Overnighters are a great way to really get to know you fellow chapter members. During the upcoming year we need to keep safety on our minds; safety is a mindset. Ensure that your motorcycle is mechanically sound and you are physically ready for the ride. Maintain an awareness of everything around you that can affect your riding Ride Safe. Always ride within your capabilities and that of your motorcycle Ride Your Own Ride. Make sure you are ready for any weather changes or a mechanical breakdown. Carry appropriate clothing, minimal tool kit, zip ties and water Be Prepared. See you on the next ride. Ride Safe and Have Fun. Jim Speedo Larson Lead Road Captain PAGE 7

Our Christmas Charity Ride By: Rita Hart First I would like to thank the Nevada Blind Children s Foundation for allowing us the opportunity to help build a better Library for the children of Las Vegas. They were very helpful in the planning of this event. I would like to send out a special thanks to Cathy Sterbentz, the Director of Programs. She went above and beyond to make sure the day was special for all. If you missed this great time to help out a local cause you can always be in touch with the Foundation at: NBCF 3811 W. Charleston Blvd. Suite D-208 Las Vegas, Nv. 89103 or call (702) 735-6223. Oh! What a GREAT DAY. I was up early and was not sure how the day was going to turn out. Smed, seeing that I was a bit nervous about how things would go, made sure I had everything in the truck and was ready to go at 7:30 a.m. when Susann arrived. We took off on time and met Rick, Shari, Jan, Jerry and Cathy at the Nevada Blind Children s Foundation. We unloaded lots of snacks and drinks. Shari, Jan and Cathy stayed to get everything set up while Susann, Smed, Rick, Jerry and I headed for the dealership. Of course we had to make a Starbucks stop on the way. We arrived at the dealership to find Mr. and Mrs. Santa (Richard and Kathy McCarthy) already there and excited to go. The Road Captains arrived a little later from their pre-ride. The turn out looked pretty good considering it was 34 degrees when I woke up. We had some time to visit and get signed in. Then Kevin talked about what the morning would be like and Jim Larson spoke of the route we would take. By now I am so excited I can hardly stand it. I was thinking what it would be like for all the kids to be at the Foundation hearing about where we were and what it would be like when we pulled up. I was on the phone with Shari letting her know every step of the way and she was sharing with the kids what was happening and then they heard us. What must it be like to not be able to see what was making all that wonderful noise? Then, Shari says Look it s Santa Claus. I hung up the phone as I drove the truck up the ramp loaded with all the Love that one H.O.G. Group could put together and it was the best Christmas ever. Thank You All. We had a grand line of Harley riders passing book after book into the foundation. Everyone then had the chance to have a snack and go through the foundation and see what it was all about. I was happy to see all the parents of the blind children have the opportunity to talk with each other and know they aren t alone in the challenges of raising a blind child. I hope we helped them find a place were they can come for support The children were ready to tell Santa what they wanted for Christmas. Most of them were very brave going to sit on the lap of someone they could not see and had no idea what would happen. I think they all managed a smile for their picture. What a Wonderful time. Thank You All for your generous donations and for showing up for the ride (38 bikes). It was a Great Time! Merry Christmas and God Bless You All, Rita Hart PAGE 9
