AREA INFORMATION WIMBLEDON COMMON Wimbledon Common is a large open space in south-west London, totalling 460 hectares. There are three named areas: Wimbledon Common, Putney Heath and Putney Lower Common, which together are managed under the name Wimbledon and Putney Commons. Wimbledon Common is protected by the Wimbledon Commons Act 1871 from being enclosed or built upon and it is the largest expanse of heathland in the London area. A parkrun is held on the common every Saturday morning which usually sees in excess of 300 runners complete 5 kilometres, and the Common also provides some 16 miles of horse rides. As well as being a fine place for cycling, jogging and walking, the Common is home to the Wimbledon Common Golf Club and London Scottish Golf Club. AREA INFORMATION WAT BUDDHAPADIPA TEMPLE The Buddhapadipa Temple is a Buddhist centre affiliated to the Royal Thai Embassy in London. It was officially inaugurated by their Majesties, the King and Queen of Thailand on the 1 st August 1966. Its main aims are to disseminate the teaching of the Buddha in the Theravada tradition. Set on four acres of land, the charming Thai-inspired Temple, the first of its kind to be built in Britain, is a fascinating place to explore. Highlights of the grounds are a scenic lake and flower garden, as well as a pasture and orchard. The Temple is home to nuns and monks, but visitors of any faith are welcome to view the grounds and Temple. Sunday s are generally the best time to visit as talks and discussions are given in the main Temple between 1 2pm, and there are also regular meditation classes, retreats and celebrations are held for festivals on the Buddhist calendar. One feature of the temple that attracts frequent visitors is the Shrine Hall (Uposatha), a sacred site used for important ceremonies and is noted for its murals depicting the life of Buddha, along with stunning gold-leafed timbers and ornamental glass. AREA INFORMATION THE ALL ENGLAND LAWN TENNIS CLUB The AELTC is a private members club, best known as the venue for the Wimbledon Championships, the only grand Slam tennis event still held on grass. The tournament was initially an amateur event to occupy club members for a few days each summer, but grew in popularity to become the renowned event it is today. The club itself was founded in 1868, with the first Gentlemen s Championship in Singles being held in July 1877, followed by the Ladies Singles in 1884. Alongside the obvious attraction of the Wimbledon Tennis Championships, the club also hosts a variety of behind the scenes tours, led by the designated Blue Badge guides, tours usually last 1.5 hours and take visitors to many of the important parts of the grounds, including Centre Court and No.1 court, the Aorangi Terrace (The Hill), the Players entrance and the normally out of bounds Media Centre.
