1 VASSILIOS ZIAKAS CURRICULUM VITAE Faculty of Sport & Health Sciences University of St Mark & St John Derriford Road, Plymouth PL6 8BH Devon, UK Phone: +44 [0] 1752 636700 (ext. 5605) Fax: +44 [0] 1752-636820 Email: VZiakas@marjon.ac.uk EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND Ph.D. in Sport Management (2007), The University of Texas at Austin, USA. M.Sc. in Recreation Management (2000), Loughborough University, UK. Ptychio (B.Sc.) in Physical Education/Sports Science (1999), Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki, Greece. RESEARCH AIMS AND SCOPE My research focuses on cross-sectoral policy issues of sport, tourism, leisure, and events at the regional, national and international levels with an emphasis on strategic planning and community development aimed at enabling optimal program design, delivery and leveraging. The underlying purpose of my research is to elaborate a model that engenders sustainable and mutually beneficial linkages among the relative, but seemingly fragmented disciplines of sport, recreation, leisure, tourism and events. To lay the groundwork for this interdisciplinary line of research, my immediate goal is to generate an essential theoretical context that discerns and explains interrelationships among those factors that facilitate or that constrain the incorporation of sport, leisure, tourism, and events into sustainable development strategies. This work has initiated the exploration of event portfolios as a means for multipurpose development. Ongoing research builds on that work by examining the synergies between sport and cultural events. Subsequent studies have extended the scope by investigating the nexus of interrelations among sport, culture, heritage, tourism, and community development in order to enable the potential for leverage. On these grounds, related research investigates the emergence of sustainability as a central pillar in sport, tourism and event-based policies, and the ways that it dictates the adoption and implementation of sustainable management practices by pertinent organizations. Findings of this line of research indicate the cogency and resonance of nonlinear dynamic systems for the sustainable management of leisure, tourist, sport, and event organizations, therefore calling for the need to systematically explore from an inter-disciplinary perspective, their adaptive capacity. A comprehensive understanding of the germane systemic processes can enable the synergistic leveraging of the interdependencies and common interests inherent across the domains of sport, recreation, leisure, tourism, and events.
