Manufactured high efficient wood stoves for institutes and households To be presented at the Annual Cleaner Cooking Camp in Lilongwe Malawi, Giel de Pooter, March 2016,
Manufactured high efficient wood stoves for institutes and households 1. Large institutes like boarding schools and prisons (300 people) 2. Health Centers and Schoolfeeding program (up to 70 primary school children) 3. Large families (12 15 members)
1. Large institutes Many boarding schools spend 50 % of the annual food budget on fuel Sources of energy: Electricity and/or Fuel wood Electrical cooking pots Frequent power outages High Maintenance costs Expensive heat transfer oil Due to these drawbacks people tend to step over to open fires Wood fuels Open Fire Masonry Stoves Most masonry stoves consumes even more wood than open fires and need costly maintenance every semester
Masonry Stoves wear quickly
Nearly smokeless stove, however the firewood consumption was unacceptable
Institutional stoves for boarding schools, hospitals and prisons 100 l cooking pot for up to 300 students 75-80 % less firewood, 50-60 % faster cooking 90 % less soot and smoke!! Introduction in Mikuyu prison (Zomba)
The Institutional Stove on its final position
Envirofit stove compared to open fire Findings of the cook in Zomba prison: Cooking beans in 2 hours instead of 5 hours. No smoke at all Firewood savings about at least 70-80 % Findings of the administrator 3 stoves will replace the open fires completely Wood expenditures will drop from 3,500,000 MK to 900,000 MK. Total investment: 1,800,000 MK. Thus payback period is about 9 months (in case of tax exemption only 5 months).
12 stoves have been installed in Malawi Mikuyu prison Likuni parish Nambuma parish Balaka parish Likuni boarding school Guileme boarding school
2. Woodstove for 20-80 people e.g. communities (health centres) and Some schoolfeeding programs
2. The Plancha Stove Plancha can be adapted to the Malawian cooking habits. There are 3 configurations of griddle top (pot ring configurations).
Various configurations possible; depends upon the meal type
Health Centres Community Centres Schools Plancha stove is successfully applied in Nigeria school feeding programs The stove can accommodate about 70-80 primary school children
3. Effective woodstoves for large families
Simultaneously Simmering and Cooking on one fire The Double-Pot Accessory
Simultaneously Simmering and Cooking on one Fire A standard house hold cookstove can be easily expanded to double pot cooking stove. 75 % wood reduction Nearly 80 % CO reduction 70 % PM reduction. Moreover, the double pot attachment s chimney vents smoke outside the nearness of the cook With extension of the chimney all smoke can be directed outside the home (Tier 4?) Its expanded cooking capacity is perfect for large families or cooking for feasts, friends and visitors.
A prototype to test the draft Artisans in Malawi can do this much better
Low Costs Effective Woodstove
Supports multiple pot sizes without compromising efficiency
Corresponding Charcoal stove Again multiple pot sizes without compromising efficiency
