Chapter Director s Larry & Gale Howard Hello Everyone, We hope all of you had a great Christmas and New Year. It's hard to believe that we are already into a new year, but we are and its time to start planning where we want the chapter to go. That is how we want the district to see us, the activities that we want to do, and the rides we want to take. So saying that, we can use u=your help in planning what is going to happen. As you know, Wayne has taken over our Web Site HTTP:// gwrraazchaptere.homestead.com. If you have not visited it yet, you should. He has installed a new calender that is full of upcoming events, and a few new photos with much more to come. Wendy has volunteered to put together this years chapter album. Also, Wayne has volunteered to help us with our newsletter. In fact, this edition is his first. If you would like to help us out by sending one of us your articles and/or photos, we would appreciate it. We still have a couple of positions to fill and I hope to have that done in the next couple months. I was informed that chapter G has canceled their fund raiser that was to be the first part of March. Chapter A's Fundraiser is scheduled for March the 21st and Chapter U has theirs planned for February 28th. Our Motorist Awareness day in the Sierra Vista Mall was scheduled for the 21st of March. Due to the conflict with Chapter A, we have moved the date to April 25th. Please get with Bobbie and let her know if you want to have your bike entered. You will also need to have a piece of carpet or equivalent to place under your tires and kickstand. If you don't have any, we do still have some from previous years. Our plan was to present Chapter end-of-year awards at the Christmas party, but due to prior commitments some of our winners were unable to attend. So, the only award presented was to Gene Goethe for Duckman of the year (he worked really hard for that one). The last three awards were presented at our January get-together. From your ACD S Assistant CD s Steve Lewellan & Michelle Herzog Gale, great job. It s time for another newsletter. I m sitting here at my desk thinking what I m going to write in the newsletter. Then I remember I haven t ridden since the last letter. I ve had a few things happen. I had a hernia operation that kept me off the bike for one and a half months. Then when I was just about healed and able to ride I got in a car accident. That has kept me out of riding until Christmas. During this time I want to thank Larry and Gale for driving Michelle and I to two rally s in Phoenix. I think he just needed to up the head count for Chapter E. We had about 5 bikes on two different rides to Saint David to give gifts for two families for Christmas. They were very surprised and grateful. Thanks to all for helping. I think Gale is glad Christmas is over. Thanks We had a good turnout at the Christmas Party with lots of food for all. Even though it was at a Mexican Restaurant, it was a good traditional dinner. On New Years Day, we got together with several other Chapters for breakfast at the Landmark Cafe. Lots of good friends and good food! 3
Rider Safety Educator OPEN Packing Up We can t carry a whole lot on our bikes, but we can carry some things. When preparing for a trip, we always have to make some compromises about what goes and what stays. It is definitely possible to take what you need for a long trip, if you are careful and are willing to make some compromises. I am always amused (not sure if that s the right word) when I see a bike overloaded and on the highway, with stuff strapped to every part of the bike, and stacked up higher than the rider s and passenger s heads! There are some guidelines we should know about when loading the bike. Our bags, or luggage, need to be secured to the machine properly (safely and securely). This is best done with motorcyclespecific bags, not something we adapt from some other type of activity. And we should be careful about not overloading each bag. Most bags have a weight limit on them or in them. Bikes which have luggage racks have a weight limit to the rack. Saddlebags should have equal amounts of weight in them, so the bike is not overly heavy on one side. Putting a chain, lock, tools and extra oil in one saddlebag, and a bag of chips in the other is not going to work well... Motorcycle-specific luggage has certain ways it should be attached to the bike, and the instructions will inform you of this. Use the included hardware in the prescribed manner. There are times when we have to take things with us on our bikes that don t fit inside our luggage, and that s when we have to be creative as well as take extra care with how we attach it to the bike. Here are some general rules: Get the load as close to the center of gravity of the bike as possible. If you are traveling alone on the bike, the passenger seat is better than the luggage rack. A tank bag is better than either. Use a luggage rack if you have to, but avoid piling stuff up high on it, and avoid putting very heavy things there, as well. Use enough fasteners, bungee cords, straps, whatever, to make the load SECURE, that is, unable to shift around if you hit a large pothole, enter a windstorm, lean way over in a curve, etc. But make sure the fasteners don t come loose and get near moving parts of the bike, where they could become entangled, and stop those parts from moving! Make adjustments to the bike as necessary for carrying loads. Suspensions can be adjusted, as can the air pressure in the tires. Make allowances for changes in the way the bike will handle once it has extra weight on it. It won t do anything as quickly as when it is unladen. It will stop in a longer distance, it will accelerate less quickly, and it will be less maneuverable in turns. Remember that there is a limit to how much weight a bike can safely carry. The owner s manual will tell you what that limit is. When making calculations, we have to include our weight, a passenger s weight, all the gear we are wearing, the empty weight of the luggage, and then add in all the stuff we are putting in the luggage and on the bike. It might be surprising how quickly we can overload the machine. Enjoy your trip! 4

A little run down on our chapter activities since our last newsletter. The following is a rundown of the December rides and events that Gale put together. Our 1st impromptu ride was to Big Nose Kate's in Tombstone. 7 riders went. The weather was decent, so some of us headed toward Bisbee and came home by way of Hwy 90. On December 6th Larry & Gale and Steve & Michelle went to the District Christmas Party in Tucson. We had a nice meal and played the steal-a-gift game. We met some really fun people from chapter A who sat at our table. It was a really fun night. The next ride was to Benson. We originally planned to go Pablo's on main street, but it was closed. So we went to Galleanos just down the street. Gale's parents and sister & brother-in-law joined us for lunch to celebrate her birthday. That made 12 people attending. It was a nice visit and good lunch. On the 13th was our Chapter Christmas party at La Casita. We had 25 people attend including 4 district officers from Green Valley. We had a great dinner and gave out some centerpieces as door prizes. The chapter paid for the entire meal, including chips & dips and pie. Everyone had a good time. On the 15th of December, 7 of our members went to St. David to deliver the items we had purchased for one of the needy families. We rode our bikes over (some of us with Santa hats over our helmets) and delivered 3 large garbage bags of toys & clothes. The family was thrilled to the point of tears. They were on their way to Utah to visit family for the holidays, and the kids were so happy to have coats to wear. On the 20th, Cliff held his annual Christmas appreciation lunch at Cochise Motor Sports. There were several of us attending. You know Goldwingers and free food. After lunch 8 of our members went to St David to deliver the items to the 2nd needy family (even more of us with Santa hats over our helmets). This was the single mother with 2 children, but the children had just left before we arrived. I think we scared & shocked the poor girl. Luckily, Gale's sister came with us to calm her. She could not believe that someone that didn't even know her family would do this for them. We delivered another 3 large garbage bags of presents. This turned out to be a great project. We gave two families a wonderful Christmas that they would not have had otherwise, and they were extremely appreciative. The Next Ride (Chapter Leadership Seminars) WW [Bill] Trask, AZ District Trainer February 2015 We have entered a new stage of our GWRRA life, as AZ District Trainers. So, our next few articles will be about GWRRA training and how you can take advantage of it. Let s start with Chapter Leadership Seminars. These are important, informative and a necessity for anyone hoping to get into a leadership post on GWRRA. The chapter leadership posts are: Chapter Director, Assistant Director, Educator, Assistant Educator, Treasurer, and Membership. Anyone, however, can take these seminars: they are very useful for any role you may like to assume. Let s start with the basic question: what is a leader? There are many interpretations of that definition leading to various answers from Mahatma Gandhi to Adolf Hitler. But somewhere in the middle is a more accurate answer. People will listen to and follow someone who does not always get their own way, but listens and reacts to others around them. A true leader is not someone who tells you what to do, but someone who guides you when you need direction. A person of one-sided opinions and limited listening skills can be of interest for a short time; but in the long run they usually get boring. A real leader in GWRRA has to listen to many ideas and sort out the ones that work best for the group, not an individual. Here are the primary Leadership Skills seminars you may want to consider: Chapter Finances: how to handle funds appropriately, how to fill out financial reports. Delegation: techniques to be sure you use the talent in your chapter to its fullest advantage. Interviewing Techniques: how good are you at asking the right questions and judging people? Leadership: be a leader not a dictator; make sure people respect and follow you. You're An Officer - Now What? : Techniques to assume control. Staffing & Appointment: are you finding the best people for the job? Write Stuff: can you write so people understand you? Chapter Leadership Evaluation Form: how to evaluate yourself and your staff These seminars are offered at various times throughout the year. If you have not seen or heard of them, contact your Chapter Director and ask about when you can get involved. Many of these seminars can be wrapped up in a single day s event: the Horizons Program. On February 7 th Horizons will be held in Phoenix. Another is in the works for Tucson in the summer months. If you can take the time and opportunity to attend one of these you will be not only well informed, but much more knowledgeable about how GWRRA works. And you may learn some techniques that can useful in all areas of your life. The cost is nominal and the benefit is outstanding. If you want to be a leader, these seminars are here for you. Take advantage of them. If you are not interested in leadership take them anyway for a chance to see how things actually work. It is easy to criticize how things are handled; it is another thing to actually learn why they work the way they do. You can benefit with GWRRA University training. AZ District Director s Chuck & Kris Liberty Well, it s the first of December. Our Arizona Convention was held a month ago and we are still tying up loose ends but from the input we are receiving, it was a success. Yes, we had a few glitches but we worked through them. What I mean by being a success is we had 278 registered and between the seminars and the MFA/CPR classes Rich Sturgeon planned, the attendance for those events approached 450. Everyone I talked to (and received cards and e-mails from) stated they had a good time and enjoyed the venue. One e-mail I received said the Saturday night dinner was the best they have had in a long time and the entertainment by The Bek s was enjoyable. We even had a couple dancing during one of the songs. They said the song they danced too was their song when they dating. One person approached me after the dinner and shared that this was one of the best conventions they had attended in 30 years. Yep, there was a mix up on the vegetarian meal but that won t happen again. The El Conquistador has apologized twice for their mistake. Dan and Donna Humphrey again did a great job bringing in the vendors. When I talked to them after the convention I asked how the vendors felt. Donna shared they were pleased and asked that they contact them for the 2015 Convention. Our thanks go out to the membership for visiting the vendors. As I mentioned in the first paragraph, Rich Sturgeon did a great job planning the Seminars and Classes. When we started the process of planning I asked Rich to remember the seminars people have asked for and be sure to schedule them, which he did. When Larry and Gale Howard asked me if we were going to have a Bike Light Show and Mascot Display Competition, I said yes we are and then asked how they wanted to do it? They responded and again, they did a great job! Since the start of the planning of the 2014 Convention I was asked by Jim Oliver if there was going to be a dress up category or event? Well, by the way I responded to the above questions I bet you can figure out what I said. The answer was yes and asked how are you going to do this? Again, in turned out great! I bring these stories up for two reasons. One is to make sure everyone knows who did what when planning our convention. Second point is don t be afraid to ask questions or to volunteer. The membership of GWRRA is what keeps this organization going. A couple of others I want to mention is Dennie and Karen Long. Dennie is the District Treasurer and keeping track of registrations, what members wanted through their registration and controlling the money and paying the bills was not a small task. And of course I save the best for last, my wife Kris. She will tell you she didn t do much of anything but please don t believe her. She was there all the way. I want to thank all the chapters for their support and volunteered time at our convention. Without you we could not have pulled it off. Some of you might know this already but for those who don t, Bob and Gail Johnson will be stepping down officially on January 1, 2015 as the Arizona District LTP Trainers. Bill and Susan Trask will be filling that position. I want to Thank Bob and Gail for their time and efforts over the last three years. Well, I think I have typed enough. Kris and I wish you all have a wonderful Christmas and a safe New Year. For those going to the All Chapters Christmas Party, we look forward to seeing you there. The Stark Reality A new year brings new affirmations. Ours was simple: Wendy and I will try to ride as much as possible after becoming new owners of a 2006 Gold Wing ABS and new members of Chapter E recently now that our "nest" is empty. Coming off the holidays and anticipating a slow week at the office, we saw an opportunity to participate in the Arizona Drill Team's series of motorcycle training events called "Skills Enhancement Training." This training is open to all motorcyclists and is held on Thursday evenings at the Phoenix Greyhound Park for six weeks starting January 8. The plan was to work a half day that Thursday, ride up to Phoenix, do the training, stay overnight, then return home on a leisurely ride back hitting 5 points of interests in the AZ Touring Program, which is a great program offered by the GWRRA District F to incentivize its riders to see the great State of Arizona. After making hotel reservations and arranging for time off from work, we were committed to ride, rain or shine. When the time to ride came, we were staring at constant drizzle and 43 degrees. The online weather radar showed green, dark green, and yellow from Benson through Marana. We knew our first 90 minutes of riding would be wet and cold. Wendy and I looked at each other to see who would flinch. I admit the idea of eating the hotel reservation cost came to mind. But Wendy didn t flinch, so I knew we were going to ride. Time to test the waterproof claims of our First Gear Jaunt T2 Jackets and Frogg Toggs pants. Time to test the heated seats, heated grips and heated foot vents. I really thought Wendy would not go but she was looking forward to the trip. So we loaded up the bike, put the hotel address into the Navigation System, and off we went. There's a first time for everything. For us, it was riding a motorcycle in cold rain for 90 minutes. We had bundled up appropriately and had the right bike for the conditions. The skies cleared up just north of Marana and the temps climbed into the mid 60s as we approached Casa Grande. We made it to the hotel in Tempe warm and dry. After a quick burger, we arrived at the training site with 10 minutes to spare. This was the first night where the focus was emergency stops and low speed maneuvers, which allows riders to practice bike control via mastery of the "friction zone," that area of clutch usage where the transmission starts to get power from the motor to the wheel. At this course, there were 33 bikes (no trikes training) and four had passengers. We received instruction prior to the drill, then spent at least 30 minutes executing the drill. Our first drill was the emergency stop, followed with a low speed slalom return through cones that we placed very close to each other. Our first pass showed much tentative use of breaking and we managed to hit three of the 10 slalom cones -- it was a humbling experience. By the end of the drill, we experienced the sure stops of ABS brakes and error-free passes through the cones. It was as much a benefit for the passenger to experience hard braking as it was for the riders. Just as important as hard braking was developing the habit of quickly looking in the mirrors after a complete stop and being in first gear -- just in case an emergency avoidance maneuver is required from the following vehicle. With increasing numbers of distracted drivers, looking out for following vehicles and planning an escape route at each stop is now very critical. 13
The next drill practiced low speed/low rpm riding. Imagine being coached by a trainer who is walking on the side of the bike as you try to go as slow as you can in a straight line between two rows of cones spread 8 feet apart. This skill utilizes the "friction zone," which is that area of clutch usage where the transmission starts to engage with engine -- in other words, where the power starts to move the rear wheel. At the end of the drill, all riders could comfortably ride their bikes at walking speed. This skill will come in handy in parades, heavy traffic, and parking lot situations. The two hour training went by fast. We learned a lot. Course time was invaluable as many of the night's participants admitted they never stopped their bikes, with or without ABS, in as short a distance as they did on the course or handle their bikes as smooth as they did at very low speeds. Having this knowledge and experience, all had left the course with skills that would have cost over $200 for this type of training but this was FREE. Armed with these skills, we headed back to the hotel and looked forward to the return trip home. The weather for the second day was near perfect for riding. We rode to Tortilla Flat via the Apache Trail, highway AZ-88,with temps crawling into the mid 50s. The Superstition Mountains are picturesque and the winding road was rather bumpy in spots. Tortilla Flat is a nice destination for breakfast/ lunch. We had very good omelets and, later, prickly pear gelato. After snapping the obligatory photos, we headed for the Casa Grande Ruins National Monument. From this point forward, temps were in the 60s with bright sunshine. After a detour in Coolidge due to a possible life-flight situation, we rolled into the monument's parking lot. We chatted with a Canadian and his friend for a bit, trading bike compliments and ride destinations. After a photo op and review of the literature found at the Tom Mix Memorial, we continued to the Biosphere 2 to discuss a possible group visit by our AZ- E Chapter. We continued south and east to Sabino Canyon for another photo op and then headed home. Overall, we had a blast during this trip and were glad we braved the weather. The Skill Enhancement Training was a challenging but enjoyable experience, for rider and passenger alike. As a note, we learned they offer a more comprehensive training on some Winter Sunday's called "Field Practice Day (FPD)" at a place called "Turf Paradise" from 0800 to 1000. At the FPD they set up and run 16 practice stations practicing various riding skills. We had the pleasure to have met John Read, the CD for AZ-S, too, as he talked of the challenges of getting more riders out to these free training opportunities. Finally, Wendy and I are hooked on visiting the great Arizona places found on the Touring Arizona program that you can participate in (see the ad on the next page).
