Bosnia & Herzegovina Bosnia and Herzegovina lies in the heart of southeast Europe. It is here that eastern and western civilizations met, sometimes clashed, but more often enriched and reinforced each other throughout its long and fascinating history. Perhaps what is most important for the visitor to know today, though, is that Bosnia and Herzegovina is a stunningly beautiful country with a vast array of landscapes, cultures, traditions and people. Bosnia and Herzegovina is a long name for a country that measures just over 50,000 km2. Bosnia is the northern region of Bosnia and Herzegovina, encompassing roughly 80% of the country; the other eponymous region, the southern part, is Herzegovina. Bosnia is an informal term for the whole country. DESTINATION Bosnia has five main cities (Sarajevo, Banja Luka, Tuzla, Mostar and Zenica) and numerous smaller towns. In the course of recent decades the population underwent a decisive shift towards industrialization and urbanization, producing in the main cities a vibrant, sophisticated, and highly educated population. Some of the most successful firms in the former Yugoslavia were located in Bosnia-Herzegovina, while the Winter Olympics, held in Sarajevo in 1984, lifted Bosnia and its capital to a special status. 4

In the countryside, a more traditional rural lifestyle continues to exist. Bosnia is a country of exceptional natural beauty, with dramatic mountains and turquoise rivers, and striking contrasts between the green wooded hills of Central Bosnia, the bare limestone landscapes of Herzegovina and the fertile agricultural flatlands in the north. The official languages in Bosnia and Herzegovina are: Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian. Though, they are very similar and in the time of Yugoslavia they were actually one language. By learning one of these languages, the other two are automatically learned too.

Sarajevo Sarajevo the place where East and West embrace themselves A legend says that the destiny of the person who drinks the water at Baščaršija will be forever and inextricably linked to Sarajevo. There is at least a grain of truth in every tradition, and the real truth is that, if you visit at least once this city, you will always and forever return to it with joy. There are only a few places in the world that will overtake you so quickly by its charm.sarajevo is most often called the crossroads of East and West cultures, but it is still far more than that. Numerous archaeological discoveries prove that this area has been inhabited since Neolithic times and also there are evidences of a significant presence of the Illyrians in this territory. A medieval town Hodidjed was located near today s Sarajevo. However, the name of the city, derived from the Turkish words Saraj palace and Ovasi field, reveals that Sarajevo, in fact, has been founded by the Ottomans. It is believed that Sarajevo was founded in the mid-fifteenth century, as the centre of the Ottoman authorities, by the Turkish regent Isa-Beg Ishakovic. Even though Sarajevo is a relatively small city in comparison to other European capitals, its name is known better than the names of some of the world s biggest cities. It has a massive spiritual and historical background

must be experienced. However, several world-famous cultural events could be singled out, such as: the Sarajevo Film Festival, that in 20 years of existence has grown into one of the most important festivals of cinema in Europe; MESS International Theatre Festival, the most significant and enduringly popular event of its kind in the region, followed by the Sarajevo Jazz Fest International music festival which is best described by the festival s motto: The best jazz is where you least expect it. East and West in this city also meet in the cuisine. In less than a half an hour walk you can find authentic Bosnian ašdžinica with indigenous dishes from this part of Europe, picturesque small taverns and luxurious big restaurants. The truth is, in fact, that each of the bars in the town is some kind of cultural event for itself: if you want some live music in a club or if you are more into intimate venues, it is enough just to step outside on the streets of Sarajevo, and you will for sure quickly find something for yourself. and a natural look. The undisputed travel guide Lonely Planet ranked Sarajevo as 43rd most beautiful city in the world in its 2006 edition, while in 2009 the guide placed it among the top 10 cities in the world that one inevitably must visit. The Golden Valley, as Sarajevo is often referred to, is comfortably situated in the foothills of the Olympic mountains Trebević, Igman, Bjelašnica and Jahorina, which makes it a favourite winter tourism centre. The list of cultural events in Sarajevo is simply too long to be written it In recent decades, with the rapid development of the city, Sarajevo has become an inevitable meeting point of culture happenings and entertainment for all generations. People of Sarajevo, usually called Sarajlije, are best described by those who have crossed the threshold of this magical town at least once: friendly, direct, open and witty. Hence, we warmly advise that on your first visit to this city you should find somebody from Sarajevo who will generously share with you all the corners of the city, at first sight hidden, but full of colors, tastes, smells and sounds. Every corner of Sarajevo tells its own story and each of these stories is very easy to fall in love with at first sight. 57

Mostar Mostar belongs to one of the most beautiful cities in the Bosnia and Herzegovina. Located on the banks of the River Neretva and is the cultural and economic center Herzegovina, and also the largest city in Herzegovina. The city is named after the bridge keepers (bridge) on the banks of the River Neretva. Belongs to one of the most beautiful cities in the Bosnia and Herzegovina. Old City of Mostar is interesting for its narrow streets full of life. It contains a multitude of restaurants and craft with traditional offerings. There is a wide variety of cultural, historical and religious sites such as the Old Bridge, Crooked Bridge, Karadjoz mosques, Turbe, Hamam, town bath, old Orthodox church, synagogue. Mostar s Old Bridge is a symbol of the city of Mostar. It is characterized by a slim and elegant form: the profile of the bridge was so thin and high above the water that much more difficult to imagine that such a building can be made of huge stone blocks. Most of the bright shiny color that changes throughout the day depending on the sun. 8

Bihać Bihać is a charming little town cantered on the banks of the Una River. The area was settled from at least Illyrian and Roman times, but the town itself was first mentioned in 1260, in a document of King Bela IV. It were these far northwest frontier lands that drew the line between the Ottomans and the Austro-Hungarians. Bihac is a charming little town centered on the banks of the Una River. The town is teeming with café s that inevitably gravitate around the beautiful Una. It is more than worth a visit to Bihac or any of the towns that live off these emerald waters. It is a great place for a stop over if you re on your way down to the Croatian coast or have visited the Plitvice National Park just across the border. Jajce The town is famous for its beautiful waterfall where the Pliva River meets the Vrbas River. Neraby is Pliva lake, which is also a popular destination for the local people and tourists. Jajce fortress is another attraction that reminds us of the old times, same as Esma Sultanah s mosque. 9

Prokoško Lake and Vranica Mountain In pretty unusual living environment, 22km from the town of Fojnica, a real gem of nature is located Prokosko Lake. This lake ornaments Vranica Mountain at 1,636 meters above sea level. This glacial lake is characterized by endemic species blind cave salamander and endemic lizard triton. For a number of years, Prokosko Lake is one of the favorite destinations for tourists. Around the lake cattle huts are made that serve for relaxation or for preparation of traditional dishes that visitors of Prokosko Lake taste wih passion. This is an inevitable destination for lovers of mountain biking and is one of the most beautiful tourist locations throughout the state.
