The depicted areas are for the purpose of the Remote Area Health Corps Community Profiles alone, and do not represent any Aboriginal language group, land or cultural group boundaries. 3

Communities can also known by several names this may include the European name given to it after colonisation, and several Aboriginal names. Ampilatwatja Ampilatwatja (pronounced um-bludder-witch) is the largest of three communities under the Aherrenge Aboriginal Association. The language spoken at the community is Alyawarr and there are up to 650 residents. Access is by road via Alice Springs. The road is sealed for 100km and there is 220 km unsealed. The trip takes approximately 4 hours from Alice Springs in dry conditions, firstly on the sealed Stuart Highway & then on the dirt Sandover Highway. Four Wheel Drive is required to make the journey after rain. Heavy rain will close the road. History Freehold title leases were granted by the federal government around 1910 to establish cattle stations on Alyawarr land in an attempt to bring white settlers & development to the centre of Australia. The lands traditional owners were coerced to move from culturally significant sites & also lost rites to hunting grounds to make way for the grazing cattle. The resultant Ammaroo Station became a gathering place for the Alywarr people by the sixties & seventies where many worked as drovers & fencers. In 1976 under the Native Titles Act Alyawarr families were granted a small plot at an area known then as Honeymoon Bore, about ten kilometres from Ammaroo Station. This small settlement is what has now developed in to the community of Ampilatwatja In the 1990 s the traditional owners of the area gained small excisions from the local pastoral lease to continue their life on their land. Ampilatwatja is the cultural heartland of the Alywarr nation. There are three outstations with the main ones being Irrultja 60km away and Atnwengerrp 40km away. With few exceptions, all the Aboriginal people living at Ampilatwatja belong to the Alywarr language group. Their country extends over some 17,000 km2 and through the pastoral properties of Ammaroo, Murray Downs, Elkedra, Derry Downs, Utopia, Lake Nash and Urandangie. Alywarr is further divided into a number of smaller units called "countries". The Amperiatwatye people are from Aherrenge country which spans three cattle stations, Ammaroo, Derry Downs and Elkedra. Governance The Health Centre is owned and operated by Ampilatwatja Health Centre Aboriginal Corporation. Local government services are provided by Barkly Shire which is based in Tennant Creek. Infrastructure and Community Life There is a General Store that provides basic groceries and trans territory bush orders, but not takeaway food. The fuel available at the community is opal (a non-aromatic petrol) and diesel. There is a primary and secondary school. Recreation includes 4WD, camping, waterhole swimming, AFL and Basketball. The Ampilatwatja Bombers AFL side play on the local ground, Windy Hill & they travel extensively throughout the region during the football season. Ampilatwatja has a very active group of artists, who have recently exhibited at the National Gallery of Victoria to much acclaim, with some works fetching upwards of $10,000. The art of Ampilatwatja is strikingly different from that of other indigenous painting with a much broader colour spectrum than what is usually expected in Aboriginal art. A new arts centre is under development in the former gymnasium. The airstrip caters mainly for the Mail plane and RFDS. It is a day/night strip but closes during heavy rain. Fully fenced, furnished housing is available for RAHC staff & is well equipped with cooking and communication facilities including an electric stove, one large refrigerator & upright freezer, a washing machine, TV, DVD, CD & video player. There is a four seat dining setting with plenty of crockery, cutlery, pots & pans & an electric kettle. Linen is provided as well as pillows & towels, although you may like to bring your own. There is a telephone in the house. Internet is available at the clinic. The RN s may be expected to share a house. No personal vehicle is provided, however, the clinic has a vehicle that is available, for essential purposes. 5

Health Centre The Health Centre has 3 consulting rooms and 2 emergency rooms with separate waiting rooms allowing for flexibility when catering for cultural requirements. The centre operates the following programs; Healthy Eating Women s health Men s health The clinic hours are generally Monday to Friday 0830 to 1230 and then 1430 to 1700. On Call rotation is 1 in 3. The clinic is staffed by 1 GP and 2 RANs with 2 full time and 2 part time Aboriginal Health Workers at outstations. Outstations serviced include Irrultja (50kms away) and Atnwengerrp (30km away). The centre is visited on a regular basis by visiting nutrition and paediatric specialists. RAHC has placed a number of health professionals in the Ampliatwatja Health Centre since the beginning of 2009. Community Security There is no Police station at Ampilatwatja. The nearest Police station is at Alparra & this services Ampilatwatja. The Police at Alparra are happy to report that it is a very peaceful community. The Alparra Police do make regular visits to Ampilatwatja to ensure all is in order & to check that Federal Government Intervention legislation is being adhered to. Ampilatwatja has been a voluntarily dry community since its establishment & continues to be so. Severe penalties are in place for anyone who breaches these restrictions. Ampliatwatja is a Dry Community. This means NO Alcohol or other prohibited substances (dry community) Other Services: Community Store ATM Primary School 6
