The story behind these facades is not an ordinary one Dukes of Granada de Ega and Villahermosa, as well as famous painters, walked the hallways and slept in these very same rooms. The palace represents one of the most significant examples of Elizabethan architecture. A palace full of history and extravagance where royalty was documented through paintings such as the well known Las Meninas (1656) by Velázquez. Renowned Velázquez helped us paint our story.
Gran Meliá Palacio de los Duques is housed in the former residence of Dukes of Granada de Ega and Villahermosa, art collectors and members of the Madrid intelligentsia of the mid-nineteenth century. Their passion for the art of Velázquez, one of whose works they donated to the Prado Museum, can be felt in every corner.
Don Diego del Corral y Arellano portrait, Prado Museum I love my family very much, my homeland and the Arts, but very little do I like money. For all the millions in the world I would not sell my Velázquez, for I wish that after my days it will remain and be part of the Prado Museum. Duke of Villahermosa

The palace dates back to 1850 and is the work of Italian architect Matías Laviña, creator also of the palace of the Duke of Vergara located in San Mateo street in Madrid. The Hotel has been completely renovated, under the direction of Spanish architect Álvaro Sans.
