2017-18 Outdoor Education Programme

Gold Practice Expeditions Saturday 14th Wednesday 18th October A five-day training and practice expedition based in the Lake District. The Duke of Edinburgh s Award letter has already been sent to all Sixth Form students involved. The cost of this expedition is included in your enrolment fee. Gold Practice Expeditions Monday 9th Friday 13th April A five-day training and practice expedition based in Scotland. The Duke of Edinburgh s Award letter has already been sent to all Sixth Form students involved. The cost of this expedition is included in your enrolment fee. Gold Qualifying Expeditions Saturday 18th Wednesday 22nd August Make sure you have passed a Gold practice expedition first. Again, the cost of this expedition is included in your enrolment fee.

First Year Discovery Day Saturday 2nd September An early opportunity for all pupils in the First Year to have fun and be challenged with the rest of their tutor group. They should expect to get a bit wet and a bit dirty! Introduction to Rock Climbing Sunday 17th September A day at Brimham Rocks providing an excellent opportunity for pupils to try out rock climbing for the first time with help and support. First & Second Year : 15 includes transport, instruction and all specialist equipment. Introduction to Mountain Biking Sunday 1st October A day where beginners can try out mountain biking for the first time with professional guidance. The cost of the trip includes hire of a suitable bike for the day so that the trip is open to anyone who would like to give it a go. First & Second Year : 35 includes transport, instruction and mountain bike hire.

7Stanes Mountain Biking Monday 23rd Thursday 26th October Four days riding at five of the 7stanes, world class trail centres in southern Scotland. Take on Jacob s ladder, Descender Bender, and the Omega Man. Some say it s a challenge, but awesome biking is guaranteed! A trip for more experienced mountain bikers, not suitable for beginners. Third Year to Sixth Form : 195 without bike hire, 290 with bike hire. Includes transport, accommodation, food and instruction. Introduction to Caving Sunday 5th November A day underground exploring cave systems with expert instruction. This is the ideal trip for beginners who would like to try this exciting activity for the first time. First & Second Year : 15 includes transport, instruction and all specialist equipment. Mountain Biking Sunday 19th November A day biking some of the local trails in the area. You need to have been mountain biking before, and bikes can be hired if needed. Mountain Walk Introduction Sunday 26th November A day walking in the Yorkshire Dales as an introduction to fell and mountain walking. If you re keen for reaching some summits then come and join the team. First Year : 15 includes transport and instruction. Winter Walk Sunday 7th January Start the new year with a bracing mountain walk in the Lake District. Let s hope for some snow! First Year to Sixth Form : 15 includes transport, instruction and all specialist equipment. Caving Sunday 21st January Tried caving before and want to go again? Join our caving day for a longer exploration underground. This day may involve climbing ladders! Third Year to Sixth Form : 15 includes transport, instruction and all specialist equipment.

Winter Mountaineering Weekend Friday 2nd Sunday 4th February An exciting and challenging trip that gives senior students the chance to learn winter specific skills such as cramponing, use of an ice axe and snowcraft. Based in a warm and dry bunkhouse in the Cairngorms National Park, this weekend is for students who have previous experience of being in the great outdoors and a good level of fitness. If conditions are poor, there are excellent outdoor activity options local to our accommodation. Fourth Year to Sixth Form : 150 includes transport, accommodation, food, instruction and all specialist equipment.

Fontainebleau Bouldering Thursday 29th March Thursday 5th April A week long trip to the bouldering capital of Europe in northern France. With hundreds of bouldering problems throughout the forest, at a grade to suit everyone, this trip is suitable for all keen rock climbers. Second Year to Sixth Form : 275 includes transport, accommodation, food, travel insurance, instruction, and all specialist equipment.

Mountain Biking Sunday 25th March A day biking some of the local trails in the area. You need to have been mountain biking before, and bikes can be hired if needed. Second Year to Sixth Form : 15 without bike hire, 35 with bike hire. Includes transport and instruction. Treasure Hunt Sunday 25th March A day walk and exploration somewhere in Yorkshire. The emphasis will be on exploring interesting sites in the area and discovering points of interest along the way. On this occasion I am not giving away too much detail in advance of the trip as I want it to be one of discovery and surprise! There will be puzzles to solve on the way and some simple map reading to do if pupils are to complete the treasure hunt and uncover the prize! First & Second Year : 15 includes transport and instruction.

Overnight Quest Friday 20th Saturday 21st April An overnight quest for First & Second Years based in the hills of the Yorkshire Dales. Navigate through the dark from our minibus drop-off to reach our bunkhouse. The next morning, we walk out onto the fells straight from our accommodation, exploring the landscape and taking on any challenges we discover along the way. This is a great first overnight experience for younger students. First & Second Year : 35 includes transport, accommodation, food, instruction and all specialist equipment. Coastal Walk Sunday 13th May A day walking the beautiful North Yorkshire coastline, crossing cliff tops and beaches. Hopefully with good weather and warm sunshine, there may be an opportunity to dip in the sea and we will definitely make time for ice cream on our stroll by the seaside. First & Second Year : 15 includes transport and instruction.

Mountain Bike Weekend Friday 27th Sunday 29th April A weekend of biking in the Lake District. Let Mr Mathers be your guide for two days of world class mountain biking. Leaving the trail centres behind to explore natural bridleways with names like Red Mist, the Nibthwaite Down, and Grandad, Dad & the Dentist! Previous mountain biking experience is necessary, as is the ability to change your own inner tubes. Third Year to Sixth Form : 95 without bike hire, 145 with bike hire. Includes transport, accommodation, food and instruction.

Year 6 Adventure Mon 21st Thurs 24th May mountain! An action packed four days. The finale to pupils Prep School career is a four day camping adventure involving a canoe journey, making camp fires, bushcraft, rock climbing, exploring caves, and topping it all off with climbing a Prep Year 6 : 250 includes transport, accommodation, food, instruction and all specialist equipment. Year First Year Experience Friday 8th Sunday 10th June Our long weekend for First Years happens in the South Lakes where students take part in rock climbing, gorge walking, off road cycling and mountain walking. Students stay in a tented village and work together in small teams as they rotate round the adventurous activities on offer, looking out for each other on the way. A great introduction to longer outdoor education experiences at Yarm School, where highlights include reaching a mountain summit and not having a shower in three days! First Year : 195 includes transport, accommodation, food, instruction and all specialist equipment.

Third Year Journey Saturday 16th Tuesday 19th June An exciting four day journey incorporating canoeing, mountain biking, and Bronze D of E training and practice expedition. A natural progression from the First and Second Year trips, students will develop their teamwork skills and selfreliance in the outdoors. The Journey is open to all students in the year group; students who wish to work towards their Bronze D of E at school must take part in this trip. Third Year : 220 includes transport, accommodation, food, instruction and all specialist equipment. Group Trips Second Year Adventure Monday 25th Friday 29th June Three days of activity based in the North Lakes. Over the three days you will take part in rock climbing, mountain biking, sailing and ghyll scrambling. A overnight journey is also part of the trip, where you will walk into the mountains for a night wild camping with an evening walk to a summit. The year group will be split in half and students will either take part from Mon-Weds or Weds-Fri. Second Year : 195 includes transport, accommodation, food, instruction and all specialist equipment.

Northwest Scotland Expedition Sunday 27th May Sunday 3rd June The northwest Scotland expedition takes place over the May half-term. An eight day long trip, we can go far away to the beautiful, wild landscape of northern Scotland. Precisely what we do will be the group s choice, but a canoe journey in some very wild places, followed by summiting remote mountains, and rock climbing on sea cliffs are all possibilities! We will definitely wild camp - in the mountains, on an island in the middle of a loch, or on a beach. It is crucial that all students have the fitness for this remote trip, expect it to be wild! Fourth Year to Sixth Form : 250 includes transport, accommodation, food, instruction and all specialist equipment.

Summer Expedition Wednesday 1st Wednesday 15th August A two week European expedition involving mountains and rivers. It could be Norway, it could be the Alps, it might be northern Spain. Come along to the planning meetings to find out more. Fifth Year & Sixth Form : 550 includes transport, accommodation, food, travel insurance, instruction and all specialist equipment. Greek Sailing Excursion Friday 6th Friday 13th July Are you a proficient sailor or do you want to learn the basics? All levels of experience are catered for on our summer sailing excursion. With a broad range of boats to sail, from single handers up to 32ft yachts, and full instruction is provided. The week is usually rounded off with a regatta on the final day. Why not join the crew for some sun, sand and sailing. Third Year to Sixth Form : 995 includes transport, accommodation, food, travel insurance, instruction and all specialist equipment.
