Maryville, TN RSVP: Bette Brady 982-0229 or Andrea Burke 984-7323 by July 20th Please FSC PRESIDENT S CORNER - Just returned from a month of 110 degree (sometimes) heat in India, so I wasn t really thinking about skiing until our board meeting this week. But we did meet and we are thinking about skiing again. Terry, and Greg, and the club, after a multi direction search have settled on Chamonix, France for our primary trip this year. It is getting harder to select new ski places that also have a surplus of potential side trips and a respectable price. Although not new to the club, Chamonix meets the side trip and price requirement. The club visited Chamonix about 10 years ago. It was a very well received trip then and we think it will be better now (I think there were 16 current members who took this trip). We are in different lodgings with the whole group in one place (last time we had two). The lodgings look really great on the web site as do those in the trip add on to Nice.10 years ago, I remember the beauty of the town, the many small ski places and Mont Blanc surrounding the valley containing the town. We had great snow there (something we can not always count on in Europe) and on our one day trip to Megeve. I remember walking the town at night during a steady quiet snow until some unnamed FSC members initiated a snowball fight. I am looking forward to revisiting this area since I am a different skier than 10 years ago. I expect the many resorts to look entirely different to me this time around. The add on to Nice sounds, well, NICE... We hope you will join us in this trip to an excellent ski and tourism area. GARRY ERNSBERGER Directions: To Donna & Bob Bailey s, Take 129 south past the airport, bear to the right at the split. Turn left at the fiourth traffic light (321 - Lamar Alexander parkway.) Foothills Ski Club Trip Reservation Policy 2005-2006 This year we are required to pay hotel deposits earlier than previous years. European hotels and agents have experienced some U.S. clubs and booking agents canceling after obtaining their early commitment and leaving the hotels scrambling for additional guests. Neither we nor our booking agent has done that but we are still required to pay the early deposits to reserve the space. In order to determine true trip interest, enabling us to lock in trip prices and contracts earlier than in the past; we have a slightly revised trip reservation system again this year. In order to sign up for a trip, membership must be current and paid for the upcoming year. A trip deposit of $490 per person Chamonix only (or $613 Chamonix & Nice) must be returned with the trip request. $50.00 of that deposit is non-refundable unless the person does not secure a trip reservation. There will also be larger trip cancellation fees as in the past if canceling late in the year. Any trip reservations received prior to July 29, 2005 (this year s cutoff date) will have trip reservation preference over those received later. Those received on or after July 30th will have reservation priority in the order they are received. Of all reservations received prior to July 29, 2005, if there are more requests than space on the trip, space will be allotted for 80% (35) of these available slots on a priority system taking into account club membership and trips taken (or requested to be taken) during the previous four years. The last 20% (9) of the slots will be allotted by a drawing among those who registered before the cut off date and who have not yet received a trip slot. This will allow some chance for newcomers to participate. The punch line for this year s trip to Chamonix, France and Nice, France is this: To ensure being included, submit your membership application (including appropriate dues) along with a check for the full amount of the deposit to be received prior to July 29, 2005 to: Terry Igoe 10550 Lake Cove Way, Knoxville TN 37922 (865-675-1898)
CHAMONIX and NICE by Terry Igoe Trip Co- chairman Plans for a great 2006 European ski trip for the Foothills Ski Club to Chamonix and Nice France were approved at the June 6th board meeting. We have reserved 44 places; the same as last year, this will allow everyone to travel on one bus for the ground transportation. We already have reservation forms and deposits from 14 people so please get your reservations and money in quickly. The club will leave McGhee Tyson Airport at 2:40 pm Friday Feb. 24th on Delta Airlines. In Atlanta we will have 1 hr. and 15 min. before boarding DL66 non-stop to Zurich at 4:55 pm. We are scheduled to arrive in Zurich at 7:55 am Sat. Feb. 25th. We will then bus to the Hotel Le Prieure, a three star hotel near the center of Chamonix, 500 yds. from the lift and with a free hotel ski bus. Chamonix, the oldest ski resort in France, is really a quaint village of 10,000 people where the tradition of fine skiing combines with the diversities a town this size can provide. Five main ski areas through the valley offer 50 lifts and varied terrain for skiers of all abilities. We will stay in Chamonix 7 nights with breakfast and dinner provided each day. On Saturday March 4 we will bus from Chamonix to Nice. We have scheduled 3 nights at the Hotel Mercure Marche aux Fleurs, another three star hotel, with breakfast provided each day. Nice is the largest resort on the Mediterranean coast and the fifth largest city in France. Nice was founded by the Greeks and colonized by the Romans. This glittering past has contributed to Nice becoming the capital of the Cote d' Azur. Nice has good museums, beaches and an atmospheric street life. The hotel is located so we can stroll the promenade de Anglais running right along the seafront or visit the daily flower and vegetable market in the cours Saleya; a visual treat and a delight for shoppers. On Tuesday March 7th we will depart Nice airport, France's second busiest, on Delta DL83 non-stop to JFK/NY arriving at 1:40 pm. We depart JFK at 3:00 pm arriving Atlanta at 5:31 pm, leaving ATL at 6:39 pm and arriving TYS at 7:34 pm. Originations other than Knoxville are available but additional charges will apply. This is going to be a great trip at a reasonable price and I hope we can accommodate everyone who wants to go. OUR WONDERFUL BORMIO & FLORENCE TRIP
