3 May 2018 Non-hotel Tourist Accommodation Occupancy Survey March 2018. Overnight stays in non-hotel tourist accommodation 1 increase 17.0% in March, as compared with the same month of 2017 Overnight stays in non-hotel tourist accommodation (holiday dwellings, tourist campsites, rural tourism accommodation and youth hostels) exceeded 7.7 million in March, 17.0% more than in the same month of 2017. Overnight stays by residents increased 65.8%, and nonresident stays increased 0.2%. The average stay stood at 4.7 overnight stays per traveller. During the first semester of 2018, overnight stays increased 4.8% with respect to the same period of the previous year. Travellers and overnight stays in collective non-hotel tourist accommodation during the month of March were: March 2018 Arrivals Overnight stays Residents 984,685 2,801,231 EU Residents (excluding Spain) 560,396 4,238,081 Rest of the world 115,415 711,023 TOTAL 1,660,496 7,750,335 Holiday dwellings Overnight stays in holiday dwellings increased 3.6% in March. Overnight stays by residents increased 40.3%, while those by non-residents decreased 3.3%. The average stay decreased by 7.2% as compared to March 2017, standing at 5.9 overnight stays per traveller. In March, 34.7% of the bed-places available for holiday dwellings were occupied, 1.3% less than in the same month of 2017. The weekend occupancy rate by bed-places stood at 37.7%, with a decrease of 2.1%. 1 Given that in 2018 Holy Week is celebrated between March and April, while in 2017 it was held in April, it is convenient to wait for the results of this survey next month to analyse both months together. This Autonomous Community presented the highest occupancy rate, with 85.2% of holiday dwellings offered. By tourist areas, the island of Gran Canaria was the preferred destination, with 980,356 overnight stays. The island of Lanzarote registered the highest occupancy rate, with 88.5% of holiday dwellings offered. The tourist sites with the highest number of overnight stays in March were San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Arona and Mogán. TAOS MARCH 2018 (2/7)

Tourist campsites Overnight stays at tourist campsites registered an increase of 45.0% in March as compared to the same month of the previous year. Resident overnight stays grew by 112.7% and nonresidents 11.1%. During the month of March, 38.4% of the offered pitches were occupied, 10.8% more than the same month of 2017. The weekend occupancy rate by pitch reached 40.0%, with an annual increase of 9.2%. 51.0% of overnight stays on tourist campsites were made by non-residents. The United Kingdom was the main country of origin with 33.8% of overnight stays by non-residents, 7.2% more than in March 2017. This Autonomous Community also reached the highest occupancy rate, with 64.3% of the pitches offered. By tourist area, the Costa Blanca was the preferred destination, with 347,936 overnight stays. It also reached the highest occupancy rate, with 83.7% of pitches offered. The tourist sites with the most overnight stays were Benidorm, Cabanes and Cambrils. Rural tourism accommodation Overnight stays in rural tourism accommodation presented an annual increase of 59.1% in March. Resident overnight stays grew by 67.1%, and those of non-residents by 31.5%. In rural tourism accommodation, 16.9% of the bed-places were occupied, with a 49.9% increase as compared to March 2017. The weekend occupancy rate stood at 30.7%, with an annual increase of 17.1%. Price indices The Holiday Dwelling Price Index (HDPI) increased 6.6%, as compared to March 2017. The rate for tour operators and travel agencies, which carried the greatest weight in the weighting structure for this month (59.7%), increased by 6.3%. The Tourist Campsite Price Index (TCPI) increased by 4.8% in the annual rate. The normal rate, which carried the greatest weight in the weightings structure in March (33.2%), grew by 6.2% as compared with the same month of 2017. The Rural Tourism Accommodation Price Index (RTAPI) registered a 2.3% increase in March. The weekend rate, which accounted for 72.7% of the total weight, increased by 2.3% in the annual rate. Evolution of travellers and overnight stays in all Spanish collective tourist accommodation In March, overnight stays in Spanish collective tourist accommodation (hotels 2, holiday dwellings, tourist campsites, rural tourism accommodation and youth hostels) registered a 9.5% increase in the annual rate. Resident overnight stays grew by 22.4%, and those of nonresidents did so by 2.4%. The average stay decreased 2.0%, standing at 3.2 overnight stays per traveller. Canarias was the preferred destination, with over 8.7 million overnight stays (0.2% more than in March 2017). It was followed by Andalucía, with 4.7 million overnight stays (and an increase of 12.2%) and Cataluña, with over 4.2 million, (and an annual increase of 16.3%).
