Abut Peaceful Valley Scut Ranch Peaceful Valley Scut Ranch is lcated in central Clrad, 65 miles sutheast f Denver, a few miles suth f the twn f Elbert. The Ranch cnsists f 3,316 acres f muntain park terrain at 7,000 feet in elevatin alng the Palmer Divide in the Black Frest. Peaceful Valley als functins as a wrking ranch thrughut the year, with ver 1,000 acres devted t farming and grazing. There are three different scut camps lcated n Peaceful Valley, with a descriptin f each lcated belw. Camp Cris Dbbins This camp ffers yur traditinal dining hall style summer camp that prvides a level f enthusiasm and Scuting spirit that can t be matched. With a cmmitment t high quality merit badge instructin and prgrams that will challenge any Scut s abilities, Cris Dbbins is where the Scut Oath and Law cme t life. Camp Crtlandt Dietler Our back t basics patrl cking adventure camp is ne f the best in the cuntry! This theme can be seen thrughut a prgram that fcuses n traditinal Scuting skills. The prgram is designed t build and strengthen the trp and patrl methds while advancing scuts utdr knwledge. The camp prvides unique learning pprtunities and specialized adventure activities that can nly ccur in this lng-term camp envirnment. Magness Adventure Camp Our Cub Scut camp, lcated n the west side f the ranch, ffers three-day Cub Scut prgrams twice weekly. The prgram fr 2011, Magness Medieval Adventures, will feature new and exciting activities fr every participant while expanding their Scuting skills. All Cub leaders shuld check the cuncil t get the latest details. 4

A Brief Histry f Peaceful Valley Fr thusands f years, the Arapah and Kiwa Indians inhabited the land that is nw Peaceful Valley Scut Ranch. A few signs f their time remain with us. Befre the Spanish brught hrses t Nrth America, hunters n ft wuld drive buffal ver small cliffs, knwn as buffal drps. On the ranch mesa, it is still pssible t see signs f bth buffal wallws and drps. In the late 1800s, the Native Americans were frced frm their ancestral lands by Eurpeans settlers. These early frntiersman built small hmesteads, traces f which can still be fund in several islated parts f the ranch. One f the mre visible ruins is lcated in the valley belw Ship Rck. Early settlers fund many things they needed t establish their hmes. Maps f Clrad frm the turn f the century shw a saw mill just suth f the ranch. The ranch had a gd stand f white pine, which was used fr lumber t build many f the buildings in Elbert, and als in Denver and Clrad Springs. Hwever, all the white pine was lgged ff, and nne can be fund n the ranch tday. The farms in the valley arund 1900 were very prductive, thanks in large part t Kiwa Creek. The creek is still cnsidered t be ne f the best water surces in the cunty. Fr awhile, ptat farming wrked well n mesa fields, but an infestatin ended that crp. Dairy cattle were a mainstay f many farms; an ld milk huse was fund n the ranch but has since been remved. The Kiwa Creek valley was s prsperus that a railway was cnstructed in the early 1900s. The New Orleans and Clrad Springs Line gave farmers a link t markets in bth Denver and Clrad Springs. In 1935, the railrad was heavily damaged by flding, and nt repaired. Anther fld in 1965 washed away the remaining structures, but traces f railrad bridge pilings can still be fund n the ranch near the hrse stables, and ccasinal sectins f radbed are visible n the east side f the valley. As the valley grew, s did the farms and ranches. Our ranch buildings help t tell the stry. In the late 1800s, the ranch wners and their large family lived in a nerm cabin just suth f Elbert, n the nrth end f what became knwn as Peaceful Valley Ranch. In the 1920s, the wners cnstructed a three-bedrm hme knwn tday as the Bunkhuse. Tday s ranch huse fllwed, in the early 1930s. This fur-bedrm hme was built frm a kit purchased frm Sears and Rebuck! The barn was built in the same perid. Hrses were kept n the secnd level, reached by a large earthen ramp. Cattle were kept n the lwer level. If yu visit the barn, nte the heavy timbers that supprt the secnd flr. 5

The Beginnings f Scuting at Peaceful Valley In the 1950s, the Scuting mvement was expanding rapidly, alng with the natin s pstwar ppulatin. The Cuncil s existing Camp Tahsa was t small t supprt the future needs f the Denver area, and the search fr a replacement began. In 1961, the Cuncil purchased the 2,500 acre Peaceful Valley Ranch frm the Abrahamsn family. Initial cnstructin f Scut facilities tk place in 1961-1963. Sme f the ld ranch buildings and equipment were remved and rads were pened. The brwn ldge buildings we use tday were cnstructed frm kits. The Navy SeaBee s, as part f their training prcess, prvided mst f the labr; a memrial t them can be fund near the ffice at Dbbins. In 1965, Peaceful Valley Scut Ranch pened t campers. Tahsa was still the Cuncil s main camp, s activity and expansin was limited t unit camping and a very small summer peratin. Peaceful Valley Develps Tward the end f the 1970s, the Cuncil cncluded that Tahsa wuld need t be replaced sn. Facilities at PV were expanded as much as the limited budget wuld permit. The Gates family, which had lng perated prsperus rubber-prducts plants in Denver, funded cnstructin f the ld swimming pl. These remains are lcated sutheast f headquarters. The first real summer camp tk place in 1981 -- fur weeks f camp, and a ttal f 480 campers! Fd was prepared at the ranch huse, which had becme the ranger s hme, and delivered t camp. Campers ate in a tent, and gt their meals frm a cunter lcated in what is nw the Jacksn QM (named in hnr f Sam Jacksn and his wife, Edna, the first ranch rangers and peratrs f that early camp). Camp was great, and the drive t expand had started! In 1983-1984, a 19 acre lake, at the site f a fld cntrl dam, was dedicated t Harld Silver, a past cuncil president. The current William R. Kephart Dining Hall pened in 1986. Mr. Kephart was Scut Executive in that perid, and was a majr frce behind the expansin f PV. The riginal camp facilities were renamed in hnr f Cris Dbbins, wh was a majr cntributr fr the expansin. He had been successful in the energy business. On his death in 1987, he left a majr endwment fund t the Cuncil, with the stipulatin that its incme be used nly fr camp maintenance. During the late 1980s, develpment f what is nw Camp Dietler began. The camp pened as Camp Clrad in 1990. It was renamed Camp Crtlandt Dietler in 1993. Mr. Dietler, wh wned an il and gas cmpany, and was an active member f the Cuncil Bard f Trustees, made a generus gift t supprt prgrams at Camp Dietler. 6

As the Cuncil grew, the need arse fr a dedicated Cub Scut camping facility. Planning began fr develpment f a new camp n the west side f the ranch. Initial cnstructin tk place during 1992-1993. The facility pened as Camp Adventure in the summer f 1994. In 1996, shrtly befre his death, it was renamed fr Bb Magness, a very successful Denver cable televisin peratr. Develpment cntinued at Dbbins, als. In the late 1990s, the Travis Shting Sprts facility was develped. Mr. Gates prvided funding fr a new swimming pl, which pened in the summer f 2000, t replace the pl built with his earlier gift. In 2004, abut 670 additinal acres were purchased with a gift frm the Gates Fundatin t prvide fr future expansin. In 2006, the first prgrams at the Gates Outpst Camp were intrduced as part f the Camp Dbbins prgram. Als, in 2006, Chuck Frsyth, the camp ranger fr 25 years, retired leaving a legacy f service t the Denver Area Cuncil and Peaceful Valley Scut Ranch. Much f this histry was prvided by Chuck. Peaceful Valley remains a wrking ranch. Apprximately 1,000 acres are set aside fr crps and cattle. The rancher, wh lives in buildings just nrth f the Magness entrance, runs abut 70 cw-calf pairs n the land. The cash crps f alfalfa, wheat, and ats are used t feed ranch livestck, as well as fr sale. Incme frm the ranching peratin helps prvide fr ranch maintenance and peratin. 7
