The Pont du Gard carried over 40,000,000 gallons of water a day to Nîmes. That was 2,000 years ago. Provence to : A journey of discovery through France September 22 to October 8, 2014 The Rhône River has played a key role in French history, trade and culture for millennia. We will explore some of the venerable cities, charming towns and idyllic countryside in the valley of the Rhône, and trace its path through time from ancient Rome to the present day. We begin with four days in Lyon founded by Julius Caesar, and a city which has long maintained its pivotal place as a centre of artistic creativity and innovation. We will explore spectacular vestiges of the Roman city, Lyon s fascinating medieval and Renaissance history, and its vibrant cultural life not forgetting the food and wine for which the area is justly famous! The city s historical centre was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998, and offers fascinating strolls through a history which seems just below the surface of the present. A leisurely trip down the scenic Rhône valley leads us past medieval chateaux and slopes lined with vineyards. We will have oppor- Photo: The Pont du Gard is an ancient Roman aqueduct bridge that crosses the Gardon River. 16
