It seems like I just wrote a report and here I am writing another one in what seems like just a few days. We have had some great riding days in May. I am seeing bikes everywhere. Our May 14 th meeting had 8 members present. Again the ride schedule was the main topic for discussion. We are slowly adding some rides but we can use some help. The Spring Membership ride on May 15 th did not happen. The Director showed up in Decorah that morning but no one else did. Apparently everyone found temperatures in the 30 s to be too cold to ride. Actually it warmed up to be a pretty nice day. I have to admit that I used my heated jacket that morning to stay comfortable. Maybe we can reschedule that ride, since the North Country Steak Buffet in La Crosse is a great destination. The Freedom Fest Bike Rally in Epworth on May 21 st was neat. Only 2 bikes and 3 members rode down from Monona, but we ran into 6 other members down there. The Rally was a little short on Venders but there were several there. I still found some things to look at. There were 2 vendors that were painting artwork on motorcycles. One of them has done work for me on previous occasions. My HOG vest has her artwork on it. There were quite a few bikes there with artwork on them for everyone to enjoy. The flag raising ceremony at the Freedom Rock was very moving. The theme for the Rally was to honor Veterans and I think they did a nice job of that. I will go again next year if they have one.
The June schedule has 3 rides on it. June 4 th will be Lynn Jaster s annual Ride for Life benefit ride. This is a non-chapter event that many of our members like to participate in every year. It is a charity ride that raises money for a good cause. Plus, they give away a lot of prizes. Registration is from 8:30 AM to 10 AM at Fast Trak at Elkader and the ride will leave at 10:30 AM. They plan on riding rain or shine. Stops this year will be in Guttenberg, Sherill, Colesburg and ends in Garber. Our Chapter s 17 th annual Rockton Chicken Run will be Sunday June 5 th. We will meet at Monona Kwik Star at 9:30 Am and ride at 10:00. This is always one of our best attended rides. On June 12 th is the annual Winneshiek County Hospice Ride. This is a non-chapter ride that we encourage our members to support. All proceeds go to benefit the Winneshiek Medical Center Hospice. It is a self-guided ride that starts and ends at the Inwood in Spillville. Last bike out at 11AM and last bike in at 4 PM. I am thinking about June 26 th as a possible date to reschedule the Spring Membership ride that didn t happen. I have to see what s happening with my personal ride schedule first to find out if I have that day free. Since there won t be another newsletter before that date I will have to send out a notice by email if it goes. July 9 th is the 3 rd annual Combat Veteran s benefit ride. It begins and ends in Elkport with stops in Guttenberg, Wadena, Edgewood and Millville. It departs at 11:00 AM. July 24 th will be a Chapter ride to the Motorcycle Museum in Anamosa from West Union. More info will be in the next newsletter. The remainder of July and August are still open but I m hopeful we can come up with something yet. Please be thinking about some ride destinations. If you have been to an eatery that you liked let us know about it. We ll see about planning a ride there. If you haven t joined us on a ride yet, please put it on your todo list for this year. We always have a great time and our rides always end with a meal. My Director s Deal will run all season long. Anyone joining us for their first Chapter ride will get a free meal, compliments of the Director. If you know anyone who is thinking about joining the chapter, maybe this will be enough to get them to commit. No more news so have an awesome day and remember: A man can be a fool and not know it, unless he s married. Happy Riding, Steve Trumblee, Chapter Director smtrumblee@neitel.net 563-536-2848

Leading a Chapter Ride Interested in leading a chapter ride? Here are some helpful tips. Take the group somewhere you like to ride, including your local area roads. You might know many of them, but other riders may be less familiar with them. Any destination will need to accommodate a group generally numbering around 30 riders, with parking for the same. We have many scenic roads in the tri-state area, but keep in mind, many are rough in places or may have road construction. It is always a good idea to pre-ride the route for a road check and to get an idea of travel time, and possible stops along the way for a rest/fuel. Remember with a group, not everyone rides at the same pace. It is helpful to have a short meeting before the ride to brief the riders on the day s route and the pace at which you will be riding. Ride captains can help if your biker bunch is too big to safely ride in one group. The ride captain should also know the route in case the group is separated. If you are going to keep the group together, it is best to look ahead, plan ahead, and watch traffic as you are riding for the group. Check to see that the destination will welcome a group of hungry bikers, and that they are open on the day and time your ride will be there. It is a good idea to call with a head count before the ride leaves and make reservations for the group prior to the ride. If you will be leading the group back, make sure everyone knows of your plan. If some riders are not riding back, know who is in your return group. The idea of a ride is to have fun. If you want to set up a ride and need help, I am more than willing to help however I can. Our group seems to believe the motto Live to ride, Ride to eat.
