H.O.G. Benefits Hi everyone, I want to thank everyone that came out on the 1 st and joined me for the Director s ride. Descanso Junction did an outstanding job taking care of all of us. I want to say that I am so excited about this year with all the activities that we have planned. We have 4 overnighters and a couple of biker rallies that are in the works. We are already planning our Spring into Summer event for this spring. There is also our Sunday rides that happen every week. We have a bunch of new Road Captains that are taking us to different places to eat. And we always welcome ideas for different events that you all would like to do. If you have any ideas please let me know what it is and I will bring it up to the Officers or you can send it to Robin, our Activities Officer. As always keep watching the website to see updates on rides and events. Something that I have observed over the last few months is how we welcome in new members and guests. I feel that we do a great job making sure that they are welcome and that they have a good time on the rides. This really makes me proud to be a San Diego HOG member. I really enjoy it when I get to meet someone from other parts of the country and the world. If you are traveling to other parts of the country or world send an email to the HOG chapter where you are going and see if you can meet up with them. I know from personal experience that most everyone you contact will make arrangements to meet you. We have to remember that HOG is worldwide and they love to ride as much as we do, and they would love to show off where they live and ride. Remember, we are all family. From the desk of the Secretary Educate Not Legislate How many have seen Jim Brown leading the Pledge of Allegiance at the General Meeting, as a guest speaker, or at the Saturday BBQ? He has addressed the chapter several times about ABATE. Below is a recap of what ABATE is and how it started: ABATE of California, Inc. (ABATE) is a not-for-profit, social membership-driven, tax-exempt California corporation dedicated to preserving motorcyclists' freedom of choice and freedom of the road. Their main goal is to promote motorcycling, advance motorcycle safety on the roads of California and protect the rights of motorcyclists everywhere. In the early 1970's, a mandatory helmet use bill was first introduced in California and brought the motorcycle community together. Easyriders magazine and a few supportive groups formed a new national organization named ABATE, standing for "A Brotherhood Against Totalitarian Enactments". Presently, depending on the state, the letters stand for "American Brotherhood Aimed Towards Education", or American Brotherhood Against Totalitarian Enactments". Whatever the name, all ABATE organizations around the country share the same common concerns and goals. The main thrust of ABATE is to "Educate, Not Legislate." We believe in the education of all who are involved with motorcycling, including but not limited to, our own members, legislators, law enforcement officials and the general public. Education topics include motorcycle safety and awareness, current laws that affect riders and pending legislation that could change the way we enjoy our freedoms. ABATE also encourages our members to help with community charity events and always promote a positive image of motorcyclists. For more information I would encourage you to go to abate.gov, stop and talk to Jim on Saturday or attend their monthly meeting on the first Sunday of each month at noon at Kate Sessions Park. This is a perfect way to keep up and be informed on legislation that involves all riders! HOG Facts Hi Everyone.. Happy New Year!!! At the beginning of every New Year I take my Harley in for a full service check up. Because I recently turned over 50,000 miles on the odometer, I wanted a thorough service and safety inspection. This year s Holiday gift cards and cash were used to replace the rear tire, change all three engine fluids and oil filter, replace the rear brake pads, replace and service the MoFlo air-cleaner, replace the spark plugs and rear fender tail lamp bulb to LED style. I want to remind and encourage everyone to regularly and frequently service your bike. Not only for the performance and warrantee reasons, but also for the safety of you, your passengers and everyone that is riding with you. At the beginning of the year I also installed a Traction Controlled Braking System (TCB) and a Cruise Mate s throttle control unit. Because I cannot legally endorse these two products, I can only give you my personal opinion of their performance, and supply you with additional information. The TCB System was recently tested and written up in the December, 2009 issue of Quick Throttle Magazine (see me for copies of the article). I remind you that this is NOT an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) which is a computer controlled sensor equipped on the newer Harley Davidson s. The test results written in the article claim to improve braking 15-20% without the danger of locking up. My personal experience with locking up and skidding my rear tire before the TCB installation was relatively easy (a VERY dangerous situation). After installation and approximately 500 miles later, I can say I m keeping mine on. The Cruise Mate s Throttle Control unit I had installed was to replace the small pinwheel locking device at the throttle grip. It is designed to lock the throttle at the desired position and engine speed and temporarily give your wrist and hand a rest. Regarding the product, I can only say it needs some fine tuning. Your Harley Davidson is a fantastic machine which frequently needs some Tender Loving Care. This past year our chapter has seen throttle cables break, tires blowout, spokes break, saddle bags fall off, exhaust pipe brackets break and exhaust head bolts fall out. Please take the time to service your ride and double check your equipment often. On a personal note.. I wish you all a Happy and Safe New Year. Brenda and I look forward to another year with each of you out on the road riding.. Q. Can our chapter website use PayPal, other methods of money transactions, or process forms? A. Chapter websites are prohibited from conducting any transactions. A transaction is defined as obtaining funds through the Internet. The chapter site shall be non-transactional. Members can download forms, but those forms cannot be processed via the site. Safety is NO Accident Stay alert & ride Safe John Johnston Safety Officer Chris D. Secretary, SDHOG
Happy New Year to San Diego HOG; After the New Years Day ride I got to thinking about how our family would be contacted if we were involved in an accident. Some of us have ICE in front of the person we would want contacted first in our cell phones, but other than that there's no way for our fellow riders to get in contact with our family if we couldn't tell them. It got me thinking of ways to fix that. What seemed like an easy idea would be for everyone to write down the names and numbers on a piece of paper and keep it in your wallet with your registration. You can number it 1 to 5 or however many contacts you want to put down. That way everyone would know where to look for the information in case of an emergency. We all hope we never have to need it, but it s best to be prepared just is case. On a lighter note, REMEMBER our 2010 LOH kickoff meeting is on Jan 23, 2010 at 2pm at the dealership. We will be in the back room by HOG beach. Hope to see lots of people there with lots of ideas of what you would like LOH to be doing this year. ALSO. don't forget we will start selling the chance to win a National HOG Live membership at this meeting. Just $10 for each entry. Let s have a wonderful year, Karen and Jennifer LOH SDHOG This is a letter of thank you from a couple from the South African HOG Chapter. Roger and Andrea Palmer rented a bike from San Diego Harley- Davidson and rode with the chapter on December 27th and January 3rd. We teased them a lot and reminded them that we drive on the right side of the road here. They took the ribbing with smiles and laughter. It was an absolute pleasure to have them join us. Special Thank you, A very big thank you to Frank, Mitch, Piper, Dave and John for making today such a memorable occasion. Today's ride was a birthday present given to us both by our daughter and her husband. Wow - what a way to celebrate it! Thanks, Frank for our first introduction into Harley riding in the USA and for seeing us safely back to the dealership. Thanks to Mitch and Piper for your excellent guidance on our first experience on riding on the wrong side of he road (for us). We hope that it is the start of many more to come when we are able to visit the USA again. Thanks for the loan of the gloves - my fingers never froze and are still intact! Thanks, Dave, for encouraging us to ride on to Julian and have the best apple pie around. It was a great experience and well worth bracing the cold to get there. Roger says he will always remember the ride when he wears his "Apple Pie" T-shirt. Thanks, John, for taking the time to lead us back to the dealership. We would never, ever have been able to find our way back on our own. What a beautiful ride - we loved being in the mountains and experiencing all the twists and turns. the breakfast at Barrett Junction went down well and we enjoyed the ambience of the restaurant. Thanks for allowing us to be part of your chapter ride today and for the warm hospitality shown by your members. what a great way to experience such a lot in a short space of time - something we could have never achieved on our own. Mitch, please could you convey our thanks to your good lady. If any of you ever find your way to Durban, South Africa, we hope we can repay your kindness. Best Regards, Andrea and Roger Palmer.
A Heartfelt and Warm Thank You Dear fellow HOG members - It has now been two months since my beloved Patti unexpectedly passed away. It has been an extremely emotional time in my life, however the help and love of my HOG family has helped ease my pain. I want to genuinely thank all of you who have offered your prayers and thoughts towards me and my daughter, Dusty, through these hard times. If it was not for this chapter, I don't know how I would have managed to get through these past two months. I would like to take the time to personally thank a few chapter members for their support. To Wade & Gaby, Larry & Yamel, Keith & Cindy, Dan & Val, John & Brenda, Sherrie & Rick, Rod & Karen, Gene & Robin, Mitch & Piper, Warren & Leslie and Chris & Jesse for purchasing a tour pack for me to be able to take Patti along on rides with the chapter and myself. Gaby spearheaded this mission to keep Patti riding with us, and for this I am so grateful to all who contributed. It is this family of friends that make this an extraordinary chapter to belong to. I would also like to thank Randy, the owner of Cycle Visions and his staff, for donating the mounting hardware and labor to complete this unforgettable gift. I would also like to give a special thanks to, and tell everyone about, the members who have really made this time in my life a little easier. To Chris and Jesse Dunn, thank you for your daily calls to check up on me and for opening your house for me and my daughter on Thanksgiving and Christmas. To Rod and Karen Slavin, thank you for the dinner invites and checking in on me from time to time. I would also like to thank John Johnston and Brenda Baddley for checking in on my from time to time to see if I am doing okay. I hope and pray that I am not forgetting to mention anyone. To everyone who has reached out to me in these hard times I am truly thankful. I may not be able to mention everything in this letter but it is all held in my heart. I offer my heartfelt and warmest thank you on behalf of my wife Patti and our daughter Dusty. With all our hearts, The Hansen Family 5 858-571-2798 quiltfan@san.rr.com
