For kids living with type 1 diabetes
A legacy of SUPPORT, EDUCATION & GOOD TIMES. 2
THE CANADIAN DIABETES ASSOCIATION S (CDA S) CAMPING TRADITION BEGAN WHEN CAMP BANTING FIRST OPENED ITS DOORS IN 1953. SINCE THEN, OUR CAMP PROGRAM HAS GROWN EXTENSIVELY AND THE CDA NOW OPERATES 12 SUMMER CAMPS ACROSS CANADA AND MORE THAN 10 FAMILY CAMPS, ALL COLLECTIVELY KNOWN AS D-CAMPS. TODAY, THE CDA IS PROUD TO BE THE ONLY NATIONAL PROVIDER OF SUMMER CAMP PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH LIVING WITH TYPE 1 DIABETES. OUR CAMPS OFFER A TRUE CAMPING EXPERIENCE WHILE ACCOMMODATING THE NEEDS OF OUR CAMPERS. EACH CAMP OFFERS AN ARRAY OF ACTIVITIES THAT MAKE USE OF THE FACILITIES AND NATURAL ENVIRONMENT AVAILABLE AT EACH LOCATION. 3
WHERE KIDS WITH DIABETES CAN SIMPLY BE KIDS. D-Camps encourages kids to indulge their sense of fun and adventure in a diabetesfriendly environment where they can: x Meet and connect with other kids and staff who share the same experiences they do and who understand what it s like to live with diabetes; x Participate in outdoor activities such as swimming, hiking, canoeing, campfires and archery that help promote self-esteem and personal growth; and, x Learn how to selfmanage their diabetes in a supportive environment. Campers often return home eager to be more independent with their diabetes care and better able to manage day-to-day hurdles. Empowerment has never been SO FUN... DIABETES INTRODUCES KIDS TO A NEW REALITY, ONE THAT OFTEN MAKES THEM FEEL DIFFERENT FROM THEIR FRIENDS. FOR MANY KIDS, THERE IS NO ONE ELSE IN THEIR SCHOOL OR COMMUNITY WHO HAS DIABETES, AND IT CAN BE A STRUGGLE TO ACKNOWLEDGE DIABETES OPENLY. A DIAGNOSIS ALSO BRINGS WITH IT A WHOLE NEW SET OF SKILLS FOR KIDS TO LEARN: HOW TO TEST THEIR BLOOD GLUCOSE (SUGAR) LEVELS, PRIME A NEEDLE FOR INJECTION, INSET A PUMP SITE, COUNT CARBS, RECOGNIZE A HIGH OR LOW BLOOD SUGAR, AND MAINTAIN A BALANCE BETWEEN FOOD, INSULIN AND ACTIVITY. D-CAMPS IS HERE TO BE A PART OF THIS JOURNEY AND EMPOWER CAMPERS TO LIVE A LONG AND HEALTHY LIFE WITH DIABETES. 4
Diabetes is 24/7 AND SO IS OUR HEALTHCARE TEAM At each camp, a team of dedicated health-care professionals provide the highest level of diabetes education and management around the clock. This team includes pediatric endocrinologists, doctors, registered nurses, diabetes educators, dietitians, student nurses and student dietitians. Camp may be a busy place, but our diabetes management practices are organized around each child individually. Supported by program staff and peers, campers meet with the camp health-care team multiple times each day to review blood sugar patterns, prepare their carb choices for meals, adjust insulin doses for activities and manage fluctuations. Overnight, each camper s blood sugar is tested by a team of health-care staff who treat lows and correct highs. At camp, diabetes management fits into the day as naturally as a jump in the lake or an evening campfire. It s a special place where the world runs on diabetes time. 5

Family CAMP Type 1 diabetes affects every member of the family. With a diagnosis, adults take on the challenge of accepting and learning about the disease and the intricacies of managing it, while supporting and helping their child do the same. Siblings have their own adjustment to make and may feel the strain of worrying about their brother or sister or have feelings of being left out of the extra attention the child with diabetes now receives. Diabetes is life-changing for everyone impacted by it and it is normal to feel confused, overwhelmed or tired of the attention to detail that diabetes demands. The good news is that you re not alone. To help families adjust to their new lifestyle D-Camps growing Family Camp program connects families with one another so that everyone in the family can thrive. Family camps are for parents, guardians, siblings, caregivers and the child with type 1 diabetes. They provide families with the opportunity to learn more about diabetes in a supportive environment, where they can also share information and experiences with those who understand what living with type 1 diabetes is all about. Family camps are offered over a weekend or as a three-day event. At each camp, families have the chance to learn, share and talk to each other and with guest speakers. There are fun sessions for the whole family as well as opportunities for the children/teens to spend time together while parents and guardians form their own support networks. Like our summer camps, our family camp programs feature many of the activities you d expect from a camp or weekend retreat: art activities, archery, boating, hiking and more, depending on the facilities and natural environment available at each location. 16
