About ECOLIFE In today s world, we face innumerable problems. We hear in the news, on the Internet, and in polite conversations of famine, disease, climate change, natural disaster, species extinction, pollution and water shortage. And we hear of solutions : food aid, pharmaceuticals, solar power, carbon reduction, breeding programs, public transportation and conservation. But as we focus narrowly on the symptoms, we lose broader sight of their root cause. To use a metaphor, we bail a bucket at a time as the ship sinks. Without addressing the causes, we perpetuate the problem. ECOLIFE was born of this myopia. When founder Bill Toone worked for the San Diego Zoo to save the California condor from extinction, he saw that it demanded more than breeding new birds to release into a hazardous and shrinking habitat. When tasked with assessment of the health of forests in Madagascar and Papua New Guinea, he understood that no conservation efforts could succeed without addressing the needs of indigenous peoples there. And when he saw the monarch butterfly forests decimated by wood-cutting for fuel, Bill saw that the solution lay not in confiscating the tree saw, but in allaying the basic needs of the person who wields it. Humans are the cause and so humans are the solution. That s the core formula of ECOLIFE. We create demonstrable solutions to problems solutions that are attainable, sustainable, and respectful of people s culture and basic needs, both here and abroad. We build fuel-efficient stoves in Mexico and Africa, to help people meet their needs without impacting local wildlife, but more importantly to demonstrate how this simple technology can be applied worldwide and how it addresses human health, endangered species, habitat destruction and even climate change all at once. We have created various scales of aquaponic systems, to instill in the next generation an understanding of how this alternative form of sustainable agriculture can be applied worldwide and how it can help to conserve land, secure water resources, improve human health, and feed a starving planet. ECOLIFE demonstrates viable solutions on a broad scale. Not researching the problem, not wringing its hands over our problems enormous size and complexity but rolling up its sleeves and showing how it s done. We thank you for helping us to keep our vessel afloat. To learn more about ECOLIFE s programs, please visit www.ecolifeconservation.org
