The sidewalks are all but rolled up in Skagway come winter, so you can only imagine the frightful conditions endured by the gold prospectors who passed through en route to the Yukon, with a mandatory ton of supplies to be hauled with them over the steep and treacherous Trail of '98. Today, summertime visits to Skagway require nothing of the sort, but you can still ride the antique White Pass & Yukon narrow-gauge railway up through silvery-purple rock faces, past Deadhorse Gulch, to see what it was like back then. Take your time and poke into every little store from the Trail Bench to Lynch & Kennedy's Dry Goods. The Red Onion Saloon, with its honky tonk piano and costumed barmaids, is a treasure trove of memorabilia featuring pictures of Klondike Kate, Peahull Annie and other vintage characters. To complete the picture of those rip-roaring days, visit the nostalgic Trail of '98 Museum. The Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park boasts restored buildings and wooden boardwalks that invite you to take a stroll into the past. Adventure Park: Observer (Sold On Board) Departs: 7:30 AM, 12:30 PM Approximately 3¼ Hours Price $39.95 Join your travel companions as an observer on the Adventure Park: Rock Climb & Rappel tour. The adventure begins with an interpretive drive through historic Skagway and up into the majestic White Pass Gold Route. Take a short hike through the coastal temperate rain forest to the base of a spectacular rock face carved by retreating glaciers. Enjoy all aspects of the tour without the climbing and rappelling, and snap photos of your friends and family as they scale the smooth granite walls of the White Pass. A cliff-side snack and breathtaking mountain views are served at the top. Minimum age is 6 years. Adventure Park: Rock Climb & Rappel Departs: 7:30 AM, 12:30 PM Approximately 3¼ Hours Adult $99.95; Child $79.95 Join a professional mountain guide for an exciting climbing adventure on the smooth granite walls of fabulously scenic White Pass. From the Klondike Highway, a short hike over a beautiful nature trail will bring you to the base of the spectacular rock face. Here you will don rock climbing shoes, helmets and harnesses and rope up to climb the clean granite. There are more than a dozen routes from which to choose, perfect for all abilities. Each climb ends with a stunning view of the Skagway River, the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad and the surrounding wilderness. Try rappelling down the high cliffs -- an adventure perfect for those looking for a first climbing experience, or for experienced climbers looking for a challenge. None of the climbing is mandatory; everyone will enjoy the cliff-side snack and stunning views. Participants must be able to hike for a few minutes over uneven terrain. Dress in warm, layered clothing that allows for good flexibility. Minimum age is 6 years. Minimum weight is 50 lbs. Maximum weight is 300 lbs. Maximum waist size is 52". Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair. Pregnant women are not allowed to participate. Climbing shoes, helmet and harness are provided. Includes a small snack or tasting of local specialties. The snack is not a meal. Observer rates can be booked on board. Adventure Park: Zip-Lining Departs: 9:00 AM, 2:30 PM Approximately 3¼ Hours Adult $99.95; Child $79.95 Your journey begins at the dock, where you'll board a van for a 20-minute narrated drive through historic downtown Skagway and up the Klondike Highway. A short walk on a rain forest trail brings you to the spectacular adventure park where expert guides will outfit you with the proper safety equipment and instructions. Then you're off to enjoy the thrill of the ropes course and zip-line experience. Start by entering an incredible series of ropes course crossings, including Burma loops, a suspension bridge, and a raised balance beam. Next up is a fantastic series of six zip-lines through the lush Alaska forest canopy. As you zip from platform to platform, fellow participants cheer you on. Your heart will be pumping as you prepare for the Walk the Plank segment, soaring high above the ground through the treetops. You'll have Page 34 of 52

approximately 2½ hours to enjoy this adventure featuring amazing mountain views. Afterwards, enjoy a quick snack of hot cocoa, coffee and trail mix before heading back to the pier. Minimum age is 6 years. Minimum weight is 50 lbs. Maximum weight is 300 lbs. Maximum waist size is 52". Participants must be able to walk for 5 to 10 minutes over uneven terrain. This is a physical activity and it is the guest's responsibility to determine that they are physically and mentally able to participate in the activity. Wear warm, comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes. Waiver must be signed and medical conditions disclosed. Pregnant women are not allowed to participate. Alaska Wilderness River Adventure (Haines) Departs: 9:30 AM Approximately 6¼ Hours Adult $209.95; Child $139.95 Board the fast catamaran ferry for a 45- minute cruise down Lynn Canal to the town of Haines -- a great opportunity to visit two ports in one day. Keep a watchful eye for marine life and bald eagles dotted along the shoreline. Mountain peaks rise from the ocean to heights of 6,000 feet, with cascading waterfalls making for unforgettable photos of Alaska and its rugged terrain. Soon after your arrival into Haines, you will board a bus for a 30-minute, narrated ride on the Haines Scenic Byway. You're headed to a dock on the Chilkat River, where your journey into the heart of the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve begins. Part company with civilization as you board the boat for the river portion of your outing today. You will traverse many different channels of the silt-laden Chilkat River. Travel at least 20 miles into the wilderness to view bald eagles and their massive nests in completely natural habitat. This roadless area of the Bald Eagle Preserve boasts the best moose habitat in the valley and your chances of spotting moose or bear are very good. The Hess family started their mom and pop tour 27 years ago with their speciallydesigned, flat-bottom, open river boats, and the intimate feel of this family-run business persists even today. They have thought of everything -- from preparing your hot dogs on the barbecue grill, to offering extra outerwear to keep you warm and comfortable. The staff is friendly and welcoming, and will entertain you with tales of their backcountry lifestyle and some 'real Alaska' stories. The barbecue meal will be served either before or after your time on the river, depending upon the departure time from Skagway. Restrooms are available on board the m/v Fairweather Express catamaran, at the river dock and at the pier in Haines. Tidal conditions can make ramp to dock very steep, guests with limited mobility not recommended. Wheelchairs and electric scooters cannot be accommodated. The barbecue meal consists of hot dogs, chips, chili, cookies, lemonade, hot chocolate, coffee, tea or hot apple cider. Art by Fire: Glassblowing at Jewell Gardens Departs: 2:45 PM Approximately 3 Hours Adult $79.95; Child $59.95 Venture beyond downtown Skagway to experience a riot of flowers, hand-blown glass art and tantalizing organic cuisine. A ride through Skagway is your chance to hear about the town's colorful history as the 1890s gateway to the Klondike gold rush. At historic Henry Clark Farm, you will discover Jewell Gardens, home of Alaska's only community supported agriculture program and the first certified organic show garden in the United States. Giant vegetables and flowers taller than you will delight and inspire your own green thumb endeavors. The garden dazzles with hundreds of tulips and lilacs during the early season, with giant delphiniums in midsummer and an abundance of flowers and enormous produce during the fall harvest. Railroad buffs, both young and old, will love the garden railway -- a G-Scale model of the White Pass & Yukon Route that winds its way through 'Skagwee' and through miniature mountains, forests, tunnels, a waterfall and even a gold mine. The model town looks a lot like Skagway 100 years ago. Watch the creation of hand-blown glass art in the Garden City Glassworks Theater. Alaska's newest 'hot shop' sits at the base of an impressive rock wall amid the beauty of Jewell Gardens. Inspired glass artists explain the process and demonstrate with dramatic flair. Interact with these outgoing and informative artisans as they magically create pieces of art from molten glass. You'll learn how this exciting project was inspired by the Gardens & Glass series of installations by renowned Northwest glass artist Dale Chihuly. The color and organic form of hand -blown glass art is the perfect complement to nature's own dizzying display of color and form in the garden. While in the theater, savor a delicious treat, lovingly made by the resident chef with fresh ingredients from the garden. A refreshing beverage is also provided. After some free time to wander through the gardens and browse for souvenirs in the gift shop, you'll re-board your motor coach and return to the ship. Best of Skagway Departs: 8:45 AM Approximately 6½ Hours Adult $239.95; Child $139.95 Ascend into the beautiful mountains on the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad. From an old-fashioned narrow-gauge railcar, you will see incredible scenery as your tour guide shares the history of the Klondike Gold Rush. Page 35 of 52

In Fraser, British Columbia, embark a deluxe motor coach to travel the spectacular Klondike Highway, taking in the sights of Tormented Valley and Pitchfork Falls along the way. At the foot of the pass, next to a waterfall, you'll find the Liarsville Gold Rush Trail Camp & Salmon Bake. A cast of sourdoughs and dancehall girls will entertain you with a hilarious melodrama and poetry by Robert Service, and teach you the art of gold panning. Then, you will be set free in the Liarsville gold area, where you are guaranteed to find that precious metal. Lunch consists of baked beans, a variety of salads, cornbread, coffee, lemonade and dessert. After your meal, wander over to the camp and enjoy the waterfall and sights of Liarsville and have your picture taken with one of the dancehall girls. Back in Skagway, you will visit the worldfamous Red Onion Saloon and brothel in historic Skagway. The Red Onion's Madams will fill your glass with Alaskan Amber beer, wine, or root beer and entertain you with tales of the girls who used to work in these historic rooms. See the priceless silver dress worn by the Onion's first Madam, and many other original artifacts left by the 'soiled doves'. This tour visits a brothel museum, which has some brothel images and content. This adventure crosses the US/Canadian border; US and Canadian citizens must carry a passport and ship ID. All other nationalities must have a valid passport, visa and ship ID. The brothel museum is not wheelchair accessible. Chilkoot Trail Hike & Float Departs: 8:30 AM, 2:00 PM Approximately 4¼ Hours Adult $139.95; Child $109.95 Hike the historic Chilkoot Trail, the centerpiece of Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. This world-famous trail was the main route to the riches of the Klondike during the gold rush era. Enjoy a bit of exercise, fresh air, beautiful scenery, pristine forests and history as the trail takes you up and over the 350-foot elevation of Saintly Hill. Where the trail reaches the banks of the Taiya River, you will board an 18-foot inflatable raft for a scenic float (no white water) back down the tidal estuary. Forest gives way to fields of beach greens and wild iris, and the granite walls of the fjord rise steeply to the snow-capped peaks and hanging glaciers. Savor a riverside snack and countless pictureperfect moments before making the return journey back to your ship. This tour won Tour Guide of the Year 2008-2010. Voted Shore Excursion of the Year 2010. Maximum weight is 350lbs. Minimum age is 7 years. Pregnant women past 20 weeks' gestation are not allowed to participate. Elevation gain is 350 feet.
