London City Airport crew being inspected for compliance User Case Study London City Airport: London City Airport is the only airport actually located in London. Situated just 11km east of the City of London, the crew pride themselves on quick passenger throughput, quoting a 20 minute check-in time for departure and 15 minute arrival time from plane to train. The airport has a singular runway of 1500m, with water situated either side, and is unique in its steep approach of 5.5 degrees as opposed to the standard 3 degrees. The airport processed 3.4 million passengers and 70,000 aircraft movements in 2013. It is growing, with the crew aiming to process 6 million passengers a year from 2023. The reason we implemented iauditor is because it s simple, it s efficient, it s quick, and we can create new templates very quickly, which saves us heaps of time. - Ben Harrison, Airfield Duty Manager

Ben Harrison, Airfield Duty Manager, London City Airport The Problem The Auditing Process Ben Harrison is the Airfield Duty Manager at London City Airport and is tasked, along with his team of about 25 employees, to perform multiple inspections daily. The operations officers will go out, they d be looking at the concrete, looking for any defects, for any debris, they ll also be looking for compliance with people operating around aircraft, Ben said. We also conduct third party auditing, so when a third party is operating at the airport, they will be subject to an audit from our safety officers. Their auditing process used to be long-winded and consumed a lot of environmental resources. Stuck in the Dinosaur Age We were using standard paper checklists, we were to go out with a clipboard and pieces of paper, we would do this twice a day, and on average it was about 5000 pieces of paper a year we d use for audits, Ben said. Reducing their paper usage was high on the priority list for the crew, as the large amount of annual paper waste wasn t fitting the airport s low emission mantra. On average it was about 5000 pieces of paper a year we d use for audits.

One of the many flights per hour departing London City Airport Searching for an Answer For Ben and his team, they had to find an alternative solution. They knew something had to be available to help them, which would meet their specific criteria. We re a modern airport, we embrace new technology, reliable technology, and we re also hoping to reduce our carbon footprint, Ben said. An app was the obvious choice. The world is going digital, and it was time London City Airport followed the trend. A safety app, for us, has to be reliable, it has to be simple to use, it has to be compliant, and it has to be able to give us data. A safety app, for us, has to be reliable, it has to be simple to use, it has to be compliant, and it has to be able to give us data. The Solution Inspector s Gadget Ben found iauditor, the safety inspection app from SafetyCulture, and knew straight away the benefits it would bring to the business. We ve always been trying to move to electronic audits, so finding iauditor is what we were after. It s more simple, it s efficient, it s quick for us to use so moving from a paper audit to an electronic audit has enhanced the way we operate.

Ben conducting his daily inspection using iauditor The reason we implemented iauditor is because it s simple, it s efficient, it s quick, and we can create new templates very quickly, which saves us heaps of time. Kevin Wincell, Airfield Operations Manager at the airport, knows the importance of saving resources and reducing the airport s carbon emissions. There s always the inherent pressure, being in management, to represent financial savings wherever possible. However, the underlying theme with the adoption of iauditor at the airport has been, and always will be, safety. iauditor reduces cost, improves efficiency but most importantly, enhances safety, our number one priority here at London City Airport, Kevin said. With iauditor, it has revolutionised the way we collate data and share that information. The ability to easily share information is often an undervalued feature, one that was a difficult process with the old paper and pen system. Employees would have to sign, scan, print or email reports and results in the past, whereas now the process has become so streamlined and everything is electronic. We can get our data from the SafetyCulture website, we can get hold of our audits whenever we need to because they re electronic now, so overall it s made it a lot more simpler and easier to use. iauditor reduces cost, improves efficiency but most importantly, enhances safety, our number one priority here at London City Airport.

Plane taxiing on the Airport tarmac Leading From The Front SafetyCulture is working in conjunction with leaders in their field to create easier, more accessible safety management. By having the safety solutions in the hands of the workers, this creates a more involved process, ingraining safety into the workplace culture, and making sure people get to go home in one piece every day. London City Airport pride themselves on their continual improvement in all fields, with a large focus on that particular safety culture. London City Airport is an airport that leads from the front, therefore we need an auditing tool that does the same, which is why we use iauditor.
