CHRISTMAS IN BARCELONA 2012 / 2013 FESTIVALS AND TRADITIONS PESSEBRE The crib is displayed in the home and features figures from the Nativity arranged in a specific order. In recent years, living nativity scenes have grown in popularity in Catalonia. They feature real people who re-enact different episodes from the Christmas story and are usually held in beautiful settings in towns and villages around the region. CAGANER The caganer, the curious crouching figure, is one of the most popular features of Catalan Nativity scenes. It is believed to date back to the 17th or 18th centuries. TIÓ An old log which people used to place by the fire on Christmas Eve as a token of abundance. Nowadays, the log has a smiling face painted on it and little stick legs. It is covered with a blanket and sweets and presents are hidden underneath as a treat for the children. On Christmas Eve, they beat the log with a stick and sing a song until the gifts spill out. CHRISTMAS Religious festival originating from the Pagan winter solstice festivals. TRADITIONAL SEASONAL FARE At Christmas time we eat the typical escudella (a tasty meat and vegetable broth) and carn d olla (a special joint of meat cooked in the broth) followed by stuffed capon or turkey, and for dessert, traditional nougats torrons made from almonds, hazelnuts and honey, or marzipan and candied fruit. L HOME DELS NASSOS (The Man with the Noses) The magic of every New Year s Eve begins with a hunt through the streets for this mythical character who has as many noses as there are days in the year. NEW YEAR S EVE We celebrate New Year with food and parties as we wait for the city clocks to strike midnight. Then everyone eats twelve lucky grapes, one by one, and drinks a toast with cava while they wish each other a Happy New Year. THE THREE KINGS OF THE ORIENT This is the big day for children during the festive season. On the evening of 5th January, the Three Kings arrive in Barcelona and travel in a procession around the city in their royal carriages throwing sweets to the people in the crowd. After the children have welcomed the Kings, it s time for them to go to bed. Before they do, they leave their slippers and something to eat for the Kings, their camels and pages, by the window or the balcony. On the morning of the 6th January the children find the presents left by the Kings. Children that have been naughty receive a lump of coal. You ll find trees, baubles and garlands, bunches of mistletoe But the main attractions of the fair are, without any doubt, the Nativity scene decorations: figures, moss, nativity groups, fountains and the ineffable caganer.
