In-Flight Fire/Emergency Landing, Federal Express Flight 46 Douglas DC--, N6855, Newburgh, New York September 5, 996 Micro-summary: This McDonnell Douglas DC- experienced an in-flight fire, and crashed during an emergency landing, destroying the airplane, but the occupants survived. Event Date: 996-9-5 at 554 EDT Investigative Body: (NTSB), USA Investigative Body's Web Site: http://www.ntsb.gov/ Cautions:. Accident reports can be and sometimes are revised. Be sure to consult the investigative agency for the latest version before basing anything significant on content (e.g., thesis, research, etc).. Readers are advised that each report is a glimpse of events at specific points in time. While broad themes permeate the causal events leading up to crashes, and we can learn from those, the specific regulatory and technological environments can and do change. Your company's flight operations manual is the final authority as to the safe operation of your aircraft! 3. Reports may or may not represent reality. Many many non-scientific factors go into an investigation, including the magnitude of the event, the experience of the investigator, the political climate, relationship with the regulatory authority, technological and recovery capabilities, etc. It is recommended that the reader review all reports analytically. Even a "bad" report can be a very useful launching point for learning. 4. Contact us before reproducing or redistributing a report from this anthology. The intended flight was from Memphis, Tennessee, to Boston, Massachusetts. En route, at flight level 33, cockpit warning lights for cargo compartment smoke detectors activated. The Captain declared an emergency, and requested clearance to land at the nearest suitable airport. Stewart airport fire and rescue units were alerted and were standing by when the airplane landed successfully on runway 7. After the airplane was brought to a stop on a high speed taxiway, the 3 flightcrew members and jumpseat crew evacuated using the forward emergency exits and cockpit emergency ropes. The Captain received rope burns to his hands while sliding down his emergency rope. No other injuries were reported. Smoke initially came from the emergency exits and approximately hour after landing a fire broke through the fuselage above the cabin - Page
