15 YEARS OF THE WORLD BANK IN BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

15 YEARS OF THE WORLD BANK IN BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

Dear reader, Join us in celebrating 15 years of successful partnership between Bosnia and Herzegovina (BH) and the World Bank! Over the last 15 years the World Bank has helped improve people s lives in BH by financing 66 projects with a total value of about US$1.6 billion. We are proud of the role the World Bank played during the post-conflict reconstruction period, when our projects helped people get on with their lives, find employment, send their children to school, and access the basic services they were used to before the war. More recently, our efforts have focused on protecting the country s forests and biodiversity, improving access to health care, improving the business environment, and protecting the most vulnerable. Today, we are aware of the challenges that the country faces on the road to EU membership, and the World Bank looks forward to continuing to partner with BH to address these challenges, and provide support for European aspirations of BH citizens. Now, the story of the World Bank and Bosnia and Herzegovina actually started more than 15 years ago; in the 1980s when Sarajevo was preparing to host the 1984 Winter Olympics. Didn t know this? Here are a few more facts you may not know about the results of the World Bank in BH.

FROM 1984 WINTER OLYMPICS TO EU Accession... Did you know that the World Bank supported the construction of the Butile Waste Water Treatment Plant in Sarajevo as part of the preparations for the 1984 Winter Olympics? The plant was severely damaged during the war, and today the World Bank is supporting its reconstruction and modernization.

DID YOU KNOW THAT WORLD BANK PLAYED A LEAD ROLE IN THE RECONSTRUCTION OF THE OLD BRIDGE IN MOSTAR?! This unique cultural monument was restored to its past glory, and the number of tourists visiting Mostar soared from 25.000 in 1999, to 1,000.000 in 2010.

GOING TO THE ADRIATIC COAST?! Did you know that the World Bank financed the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the main road and all the bridges between Sarajevo and Mostar that were destroyed during the war?

HAVE A GOOD IDEA?! BUSINESS The World Bank helped establish the microcredit sector that provides access to credit to small entrepreneurs with viable business ideas. Hundreds of thousands of jobs were created and sustained in BH thanks to financing provided through microcredit organizations.

HAPPY CHILDREN GO TO SCHOOL... The World Bank financed reconstruction, furnishing and equipping of 82 primary schools.

DID YOU KNOW THAT THE BH POWER GENERATION SYSTEM IS ONE OF THE STRONGEST IN THE REGION ESPECIALLY FOR PRODUCTION OF CLEAN ENERGY?! The World Bank contributed to this via four investment projects which have financed hundreds of kilometers of power lines, transmission stations, and thermo and hydro power plants since 1996. rehabilitation of

NEED ACCESSIBLE HEALTH CARE SERVICES? The World Bank supported the rehabilitation of 5 clinics, and 15 hospitals in BH. Today, the World Bank is financing improvements in primary health care through the family medicine model. 625 family medical centers were rehabilitated and 135 ambulances were furnished. By 2014, 70% of BH population will have access to quality primary health care provided in modern family medicine centers.

THE LANDFILLS REHABILITATED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE WORLD BANK REPRESENT THE REGIONAL BEST PRACTICE... The World Bank continues to invest in solid waste management and by 2014, BH will have a network of with the 10 12 regional landfills in line EU standards that will cover the needs of almost the entire country.

? THIRSTY An additional 40,000 people in BH now have water around the clock, thanks to a project supported by the World Bank that financed water supply rehabilitation.

HEART CENTER IN TUZLA - EXAMPLE OF THE HIGHEST QUALITY HEALTH CARE- The International Finance Corporation (IFC-member of the World Bank Group) supported the Heart Center in Tuzla to expand access to high quality and affordable cardiovascular health services in BH. By 2012, the Center is expected to reach 4,500 in-patients and 20,000 outpatients per year.
