PADDLING AMONG ICEBERGS TRIP SUMMARY Immerse yourself in some of the best of East Greenland s amazing nature, culture and highlights on this beautiful 11-day kayaking and camping adventure with Spirit of the West Adventures. Explore the amazing vastness and allow your senses to soak up the magic of high mountain peaks, calm waters interrupted by icebergs, the occasional calving glaciers and maybe whales and seals in the ice fjords. GREENLAND KAYAKING TRIP SUMMARY Designed to introduce guests to an arctic environment, this trip combines travel by kayak with ample time for hiking into the higher country back from the shore, offering a well-rounded perspective on this unique environment. This trip will be led by seasoned guide and Spirit of the West Adventures owner Rick Snowdon. Rick is happy to discuss any questions or concern you might have during reading through our itinerary or generally happy help in planning the tour with you. Our kayaking adventure takes place on the east side of Greenland in the immense fiord system of Scoresbysund. Remote and pristine, this region is ironically easier to access than the more populated West Greenland due to flight connections through Iceland (instead of requiring a flight all the way to Europe only to backtrack half a hemisphere). After meeting at the airport in Keflavík, Iceland (48 km from Reykjavik) we ll fly to Constable Point in East Greenland where we begin the trip. At 71⁰ north, the sun shines almost 24 hours a day, invigorating those of us from more temperate latitudes. Through steep and rocky fiords we ll wind our way among channels and icebergs to find each night s campsite, occasionally coming across ancient Inuit encampments. Spirit of the West Adventures will supply group kayaking equipment (mix of double and single kayaks, depending on group size), camping and cooking equipment, guide(s) and guiding service, meals from dinner on Day 1 to lunch on Day 11, including snacks and non-alcoholic beverages, local knowledge and trip planning services. The trip begins and ends in Reykjavik, Iceland. HIGHLIGHTS One of the highlights of this trip is the amount ice (mostly icebergs and some floe ice) we will see here due to the many glaciers in the fiord and pack ice that is typically pushed south from higher in the arctic. While not an impediment to travel, it creates an ever-changing landscape on the sea that is difficult to take one s eyes off of. The sound of calving glaciers and icebergs is a constant backdrop to our trip. Wildlife will also make an appearance, with muskox, arctic fox, harp seal and arctic hare are among the more likely visitors. Narwhal enter the fiord in midsummer and may surprise us with their fast swimming and smooth backs. Rarely we would see a mink or fin whale. There is a very small chance of encountering a polar bear, though we would count ourselves quite lucky if we did (they occasionally drift south with the pack ice; we will secure our camp every night regardless). WEATHER Greenland is notorious for its high-pressure system and good weather in the summer. The climate is dry and the temperatures generally range from 35 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Showers and strong wind can occur, although rarely.

SAMPLE ITINERARY & HIGHLIGHTS This is the proposed itinerary for our trip, but it is flexible and may be adapted to suit the interests of those who join the trip as well as the weather conditions. Day Zero Depart your home country for Reykjavik, Iceland. Most flights from North America are overnight, and you will need to be in Reykjavik/Keflavík airport to check in for your flight to Greenland by mid-morning on day 1. To ensure your timely arrival you may wish to err on the side of caution and arrive a day early to explore the city. Day 1 You will meet your guides at the Keflavik international airpot (48 km from Reykjavik) by mid-morning. Check in with Air Iceland for the 2-3 hour flight to Greenland. On arrival you will transfer from the airport to the village of Ittoqqortoormiit by helicopter for a welcoming meeting and to discuss the upcoming trip. Your guide(s) will be busy readying equipment and food for the journey into the fiord by water taxi the next day. Dinner at the guesthouse and overnight in Ittoqqortoormiit. Day 2 In the morning we ll board water taxis driven by local Greenlanders for the boat trip (about 5-7 hours) into the fiord where we ll begin kayaking. On arrival we ll sort our gear and set up our first camp. Day 3 Taking advantage of the spectacular setting we ll explore on foot up the glacier-carved valley of Hjørnedal, keeping a lookout for our first sightings of muskox. Day 4 to 8 Winding our way among icebergs and islands, we ll travel north up Rødefjord at the head of the Scoresbysund Fjord system. With Milne Land to the east and the mainland mountains and icecap to the west we ll get into the routine of taking down camp, loading boats and paddling for the day s adventure. Distances will be enough to feel like we accomplished something, but still leave time to ramble about in the evenings taking in the flora and fauna. We will also take at least one more day off of paddling to hike inland, gaining a different vantage point above the sea. Highlights will be watching icebergs calve around us, keeping track of the numerous birds, spotting muskox and keeping an eye out for the elusive narwhal. Day 9 Having arrived at our last camp on Cape Hoffman Halvø (straddling the smaller Rypefjord and Harefjord), this day we ll hike again to higher ground for a long view down the path we just paddled. Another exceptional view awaits. Day 10 Today we pack up our gear for the return trip to Ittoqqortoormiit. This journey will be most of the day by water taxi, so we ll spend this night again at the guesthouse in town. There will be some time to wander around town and take in the unfamiliar sights and sounds of another country, possibly picking up a souvenir or two along the way. Day 11 In the morning we ll return to Reykjavik where you will say goodbye to your guide(s) at the airport. Here you may choose to spend some time exploring what Iceland has to offer, or if time is of the essence you can continue back to your home country. Please note The itinerary is weather and group dependent. As with travel to any destination in the far north, logistics are vulnerable to weather and delays, so please plan your onward travel from Iceland and post-trip obligations accordingly. We require all guests to purchase trip cancellation and interruption insurance to help deal with the unexpected.

TRAVEL TIPS FOR AMAZING GREENLAND Greenland is one of those countries where tourism isn t yet huge. YES! Many people aren t aware of all that Greenland has to offer and don t know that it is far from being outside the realm of possibility! This is just a short guide with some handy info to help make your Greenlandic trip as easy as possible. LANGUAGE The language spoken depends on the region. In the capital city of Nuuk, Danish is more widely spoken than Greenlandic, and native Danish expats in Greenland will generally speak good English. Native Greenlanders in Nuuk generally speak Danish and then either Greenlandic or English as a second language. In the smaller towns and cities, Greenlandic tends to be the most widely spoken language, and often these Greenlanders will learn some Danish too, but many will not have any English. However, there are lots of Danish expats living in Greenland as part of the tourism industry and most will speak English. CURRENCY Danish Kroner (DKK) is the official currency in Greenland. Most places will accept Visa and Mastercard and there are ATMs in the town centres. Airports will not have currency exchangers and currency exchangers are a rarity in the cities. Make sure you have enough Danish Kroner before arriving in Greenland. WI-FI General rule of thumb in Greenland: expect to have zero internet access and occasionally you will find yourself pleasantly surprised. There are Wi-Fi networks around the place but expect to have to pay a premium to use them. Just go with the flow and enjoy switching off from the world for a while. There is a reason you travel to Greenland ;-) TIPPING Tipping isn t customary in Greenland as the service charge will be included in the bill, however, like anywhere in the world, if the service you receive is exemplary then definitely leave a tip! TAXI Smaller cities and towns means less taxis floating around the place, and you may arrive into an airport and find no cabs waiting. Try and find a local with a phone to call a cab for you, otherwise you may be in for a long wait. WHY TO TRAVEL TO THE GREEN PARADISE Greenland is remote, wild, rugged, other-worldly and nothing short of scenic perfection. There are so many adventures just waiting to be had there, many new settlements to explore, new wildlife to sight and new people to meet. Greenland has been referred to as one of Earths last wildernesses you know you want to see it for yourself! ELECTRICITY European adapter or EU plugs work in Greenland.

TESTIMONIALS OF SPIRIT OF THE WEST Can t thank you all enough will honestly never forget these inspiring few days. Amazingly wonderful. Judy K. Katie and Rosie B. We enjoyed the scenery, the people, the weather, the adventure, the coordination, the accommodation - we wouldn t recommend you change a thing! Lesley, Michael C. Kind of hard to advance perfection. J. Nelles Professional, inspirational, and full of good times and great adventure. M. Follet It was, as always a wonderful trip! I don t think that I could wipe the smile off my face, and I m sure that everyone here at home is getting sick of my wonderful Spirit of the West stories. Thanks so much! Sheila S.
