President Rob So, only a few more weeks to go before Bill Muldoon takes over as President! He gave us the good news last week that the PresidentElect for the 2017-18 year will be Gayle Plunkett. Last week s speaker Bob Aitken gave a very informative talk on the activities of Rotary Health. Bob mentioned that over $33 million has been raised since 1985 to support worthy projects such as Mental Health research, Indigenous Health Scholarships, Polio and many others. Funding for these projects is currently down and ongoing donations are urgently required to sustain the good work being done. This week s meeting will be a combined meeting with the Westbury Rotary Club at the Bush Inn and I look forward to a good attendance from both clubs. To date I have only received one final report from the Directors. Please ensure I receive them in the next week enabling me to finalise the final report for the year. Club Changeover Friday 1st July, 2016 Full details are on the back page. Please note that unless otherwise advised Rotarians will be booked in as a double. Apologies and additional guests should be advised to PP Ann no later than Wednesday 22nd June, 2016. Family of Rotary Wedding Anniversaries: PPs Peter Talbot & Lois Beckwith Rtn John & Gillian Robertson 2nd June 6th June

THANK YOU My sincere thanks for the Deloraine Rotarians who assisted in the moving of the stage and chairs as well as setting up the pavilion. I am aware that in a very short time you have had the conference, MUNA and now District Assembly so I am sure you don t want to move another chair in a considerable time. It was greatly appreciated. Fiona and I look forward to spending time with your club over the coming year. DGE Gerard Blizzard Tasmanian Craft Fair Next Meeting Monday 13 th June 7.15p.m. at Rotary Pavilion Who We Are Australian Rotary Health Australian Rotary Health is one of the largest independent funders of mental health research within Australia. We also provide funding into a broad range of general health areas, provide scholarships for rural medical and nursing students, as well as Indigenous health students. Australian Rotary Health provides funding into areas of health that do not readily attract funding, and promotes findings to the community. Australian Rotary Health is supported by a number of Rotary Clubs in Australia. We have a broad vision to improve the health and wellbeing of all Australians. INNER WHEEL June Meeting Information The June Inner Wheel Meeting will be held on Wednesday 22 nd at the British Hotel, 6.00 for 6.30p.m. Guest Speaker at this meeting will be Jacqui Stacey. A reminder to all Inner Wheel members that you are booked in for all Inner Wheel Meetings, and if you are unable to attend you should contact Robin Dixon on 0407 622 161 Free advice is the kind that costs you nothing unless you act upon it. Most things that we think are impossible in life, is because we have never tried them. So go for every dream and opportunity before making a judgement If at first you don t succeed, then sky-diving definitely isn t for you! Never be afraid to try something new. Remember, amateurs built the ark. Professionals built the Titanic. The latest new dance craze is called, The Politician. It s two steps forward, one step backward, and then a side step.

From the District Governor Last week Lesley and I attended the Tasmania North West Science and Engineering Challenge as assistants. The event was also run in Launceston and Hobart. The Science and Engineering Challenge is a day long competition designed to provide year ten (or year nine) high school students with a positive experience of science and engineering. A maximum of eight schools per day compete against each other at one central venue. Lesley assisted on the "Mission to Mars" project and I assisted on "Hover Frenzy". The overall winning team was from Devonport High School. Well done to the Devonport High School Team. We are in the final stages of approval for a Foundation Global Grant for a "Gamma Probe" submitted by the Rotary Club of Devonport North. If approval is given (I believe it will happen) then this will be the first time Rotary Tasmania would be the recipient of a Foundation Global Grant and for the project to be applied in Tasmania. The Gamma Probe will be used to detect Breast Cancer, it is a portable instrument of the latest technology. The 5 year survival figures for breast cancer "across the board" have improved significantly in the last 30 years from around 50 to 80 percent 5-year survival. Much of this is attributed to breast screening services. We have been assisted in this application by a New Zealand District who have contributed significant funds to this project in addition to the funds contributed by a number of North West Rotary Clubs. This year the District Changeover will be held at the Riverside Golf Club on the 26 th June. DG John White Ribbon Violence against women, indeed violence in general, has the potential to be a traumatic subject to some people. This can t be ignored nor can the fact that this subject can be ignored any longer. Like mental health one of the best ways to commence is to start public discussions on this, which to date has been a very private problem. I believe that our Rotary District with our respected Rotarians leading the way can be at the forefront of facilitating these discussions. I also realise that because of the subject matter there is the possibility that some of us may find this quite difficult. Please if anyone needs the links below give information and contacts. https://www.1800respect.org.au/service-support/tasmanian-domestic-family-violence-andsexual-assault-services/ http://www.dhhs.tas.gov.au/service_information/children_and_families/ family_violence_counselling_and_support_service DGE Gerard Blizzard District Information Colony 47 Committee information Community Service Colony 47 Aboriginal Community Pathways programme supports our Aboriginal community to access responsive and culturally appropriate activities in the local area. Stage one: The first stage will see bush tucker being grown along the river bank at Deloraine, developed through community partnership approach with an aim to create a sense of ownership by the whole community and to building positive community relationships and partnerships. Along the existing pathway, a designated 6 sites have been designed to consist of garden beds planted, as advised by Habitat Nursery, with various Bush Tucker plants utilised by Tasmanian Aboriginal People. The plants which will be listed/classed as edible, medicinal, aromatic or decorative and there will be signage to provide descriptions of the produce and any health and safety messages. The stations will also incorporate QR codes for the public to access via mobile phone for more detailed information regarding recipes/history etc. The Trail is approximately 700 metres in length (round-trip), is all weather and gentle, meaning that it can be navigated by all people, with special consideration for the elderly and people living with a disability. Stage two and three: After stage one is underway we are aiming to embellish the experience of the trail with small commissioned community sculptures of native animals and aboriginal designs interpreted via mosaic tiles onto the two existing retaining walls on the river bank. Our donation of $1,500.00 will help with 9 sitting stones, representing the 9 aboriginal nations of the area, embedded in the grass in a circle adjacent to the pontoon. Meander Valley Business Association We have donated $1,000.00 towards the creation of new signs to replace the old ones at the entrance of the town.

First THE FOUR WAY TEST Is it the TRUTH? Second Is it FAIR to all concerned? Third Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Fourth Committee information International Service BIG THANK YOU FROM THE MIGRANT RESOURCE CENTRE The bridge scarf project that we supported a number of years ago has had a second lease of life. We provided $250 to support a group of volunteers co-ordinated by Niecy Brown to turn the giant knitted scarf into blankets and personal scarfs. We took one suitcase to an orphanage in Nepal and a second package was distributed to refugee families who have recently arrived in Tasmania. We have received the following note:- Thank you so much for the beautiful knitted items you generously donated. I have distributed them to a number of our families who were very grateful to receive them regards Maria Sullivan Migrant Resource Centre Niecy Brown packing the donated items Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
