Program DESCRIPTIONS NEIGHBOURHOOD RECREATION DROP-IN PROGRAMS Program Descriptions Green Shack playground program (ages 6 12) Join in cooperative games, sports, crafts, music, theatre, nature and free play! This program runs every Monday to Friday for 3.5 hours each day at over 190 neighbourhood parks! Children under the age of six are welcome as well, but must be supervised by a parent or guardian at all times. Find a calendar of planned activities on the side of each Green Shack every week. If there s a game kids would like to play, they can just ask the Program Leader! For more information, visit edmonton.ca/greenshacks. Flying Eagle (ages 6 12) This program visits various Green Shack sites each week of the summer, providing activities in the same place and time as the Green Shack program. The Flying Eagle program allows children and families to learn about the first peoples of this land and Treaty 6. Flying Eagle uses the Medicine Wheel as a guiding principle for program activities. Activities could include storytelling, bead crafts, dream catchers, double ball, lacrosse, bannock making, smudging and sharing circles. A full listing of Flying Eagle programs can be found on page 13. Did you know the Green Shack Program runs during the school year at select locations around the City? For details on locations, times and dates visit edmonton.ca/greenshacks. page 1

NEIGHBOURHOOD RECREATION DROP-IN PROGRAMS PROGRAM STAFF Pop Up Play program (ages 6 12) For two days each week this variation of a Green Shack program runs 3.5 hour program brings cooperative games, sports, crafts, music, nature and imaginative play to a park near you! Children under the age of 6 are welcome as well but must be supervised by a parent or guardian at all times. Keep an eye out for the colourful Pop-Up Play flags! Have completed a Security Clearance process, are trained in First Aid and are certified specialists in FUN! Are easily identifiable by their coloured t-shirts and name tags. May be assisted by a Leaders In Training youth volunteer. You will see many different summer staff in your Community Programs this summer. Everyone plays a slightly different role. To help you understand who does what, our staff will be wearing different coloured shirts. Please feel free to stop by and chat with any of them! Children s Program Leaders (Blue T-Shirt) You ll see them leading games, crafts and other activities at the Green Shack Playground Programs, Pop Up Play programs and Flying Eagle programs. They also lead the registered daycamps at community halls. Youth Program Leaders and Skate Park Hosts (Orange T-Shirt) You ll find them at YEGyouth programs and skateboard parks. Flying Eagle Program (ages 6 12) This program visits various Green Shack sites each week of the summer at the same time as Green Shack programs. The Flying Eagle program allows children and families to learn about the first peoples of this land and Treaty 6. The Flying Eagle program uses the medicine wheel as a guiding principle. Activities may include storytelling, bead crafts, dream catchers, double ball, lacrosse, bannock making, smudging and talking circles. Incorporating Indigenous teachings into community recreation helps to build a relationship of understanding and respect among the program participants. It also encourages discussions about the history of the land and celebrates the relationship among all Edmontonians today. The Flying Eagle program leader helps create a safe space for these conversations and teachings to be shared. For the 10th year anniversary of Flying Eagle in 14, a story book was created in Cree and English. It is available at edmonton.ca/flyingeagle.
