New for 2010 Reviving around t memories and the nature reser e, Snibston s new audio tour follows the fascinating events and people who shaped history in this area. Twycross Zoo opens its new visitor centre this year, which will include a Himalayan themed Snow Leopard enclosure and the New England wader bird enclosure. In July, the National Memorial Arboretum will complete the Basra Wall to commemorate those that have lost their lives in the Iraq conflict. The arboretum is home to more than 100 woodland gardens and sculptures including the award-winning Armed Forces Memorial. A new circular off-road trail has been opened in the heart of the Forest for those wanting a gentle cycle ride, a family walk, a wildlife ramble or a daily jog. The four and a half mile Conkers Circuit is ideal for all ages with easy to follow circuit markers and shorter loops within it. The circuit joins the Sustrans National Cycle Network, passing Conkers, Moira Furnace and YHA National Forest. And hiring a bike is even easier with cycle hire now offered at Moira Furnace. There are regular events at the furnace as well as the museum tours, craft village and canal boat trips. Cycle hire is also available at Rosliston Forestry Centre which has just opened The Glade events arena. Look out for events and performances throughout the year. Follow the smell of freshly-baked bread to the Ferrers Centre for Arts and Crafts which now has a wonderful bakery, stocking a range of home-made breads, cakes and local foods. The Gardener s Bothy, a new garden store and rural craft workshop at the Ferrers Centre, will be hosting demonstrations and hands-on taster sessions for visitors to try woodland crafts. And for budding Ray Mears, Woodland Ways is launching a new bushcraft course especially for teenagers. STOP PRESS. STOP PRESS. Visit www.nationalbrewerycentre.co.uk for opening times and details of this brilliant visitor attraction! Make a weekend of it! Whether you prefer a cosy family run guesthouse or B&B in one of our many pretty villages, a campsite in a peaceful Forest setting, a timber lodge nestling in its own woodland glade or a large hotel, the National Forest & Beyond has a wealth of choice in where to stay. So why not make a weekend of it. Check out the latest deals at /holidays Family get-togethers One of the beauties of the National Forest & Beyond is the fact it is so easily accessible from the M1, M6, A50, M42 and A38. Centrally located in the country and with an excellent road network in and around the Forest, far-flung families often choose this area for get-togethers. You can even stay in the most modern, environmentallyfriendly YHA in the country. Forget the image of large grey dorms in dusty old youth hostels, YHA National Forest has bright family rooms, a bar and bistro, internet access, a games room and is a stone s throw from Conkers the interactive family visitor attraction at the heart of The National Forest. Come & try something new in the National Forest & Beyond! The National Forest is one of Britain s boldest environmental projects, creating a Forest for the nation across 200 square miles of Leicestershire, Staffordshire and Derbyshire. In less than 20 years, one of the least wooded parts of the country has been transformed. Nearly eight million trees have been planted, trebling the woodland cover, creating habitats for wildlife Woodland cover 2009 (18%) Be part of the Forest s creation and a beautiful landscape for people to enjoy. These trees, about 90% broadleaf, are maturing well and new woodlands continue to be created. The ultimate goal is for woodland to cover around a third of the Forest area and to link the ancient forests of Charnwood and Needwood. Woodland cover 1991 (6%) You can help create this forest in the making through our plantatree scheme. You will be invited to a special tree planting day and receive a certificate. This makes a great gift! The surfaced trails weave around the lakes, ponds and wildflower meadows for all to enjoy. Immerse yourself in the wonderful mature woodlands of Charnwood and Needwood, the two ancient forests on each end of The National Forest. Bradgate Park is a mustsee. Deer roam freely around the park s majestic trees and a river meanders by the ruins of the home of Lady Jane Grey the former nine day queen. Nearby Beacon Hill, the second highest point in Leicestershire, boasts fantastic views from its craggy summit and you can enjoy a stroll through the park s Native Tree Collection down to Outwoods, where the display of bluebells in May is among the best in the country. Bluebells carpet the forest floor at Jackson s Bank in Needwood and Calke Park, which is internationally important for its wildlife and 900 year old veteran oaks. Yoxall Lodge opens its gates for visitors to see both the amazing display of bluebells and its autumn colours. The sea of snowdrops in February; the blanket of bluebells in May; the fiery reds and golds of autumn and the growing woodland come and enjoy this ever-changing landscape with a forest holiday from just 75. Treasures of past the This area is steeped in history. And Calke Abbey is a must-see! It remains frozen in time from when its former eccentric and reclusive owners allowed the house to slowly fall into disrepair. It is now meticulously maintained by the National Trust to preserve this state of faded grandeur. Meet the characters who lived in this fascinating house during Calke Alive days. Find out how harsh life would have been working in a 19th Century blast furnace at Moira Furnace Museum or feel the power of the working beam engines at Claymills Pumping Station. Workings of a bygone age Based on a former coalmine, Snibston s colliery and audio tours reveal the mining memories from those who grafted underground. Like mining, pottery was a major industry for this area. Sharpe s Pottery Museum traces the history of this industry and hosts regular talks, events and exhibitions. Kings and noblemen were regular visitors to this area as far back as Saxon times when the Mercian kings of the 8th Century were buried in Repton. Mary Queen of Scots was held captive in Tutbury Castle and Bosworth Battlefield is where Richard III, the last king of England to die on the battlefield, lost his crown to Henry VII. You can see at Donington le Heath Manor House the bed where he allegedly slept before setting off to battle.
