GAMA/Build A Plane 2017 Aviatin Design Challenge OBJECTIVE Cngratulatins! Nw that yu have cmpleted the curriculum, yu are ready t apply what yu ve learned in the prgram t design, build, and fly a virtual airplane delivering the maximum paylad as quickly and efficiently as pssible. RULES Design the best airplane t deliver the maximum paylad as quickly and efficiently as pssible between tw preselected airprts. The fllwing prvides instructins and rules t successfully submit an entry fr the Aviatin Design Challenge: Plane Design & Cnstructin Using Plane Maker, mdify a Cessna 172SP (File Name Cessna_172SP.acf) t create the best airplane fr the missin. The missin fr the design challenge scre is based paylad, time, and fuel cnsumed by the airplane t successfully cmplete the flight. NOTE: the ttal weight f the aircraft fr this cmpetitin can nt exceed the maximum allwable weight prescribed by the design. Key airplane design elements that yu can mdify are thse addressed in the curriculum, such as wing shape, hrizntal stabilizer, engine hrsepwer, etc. Yu may nt change the efficiency (specific fuel cnsumptin r SFC) f the engine r planet mass (mu)/gravity. Empty weight f the airplane must be increased/decreased by: tw punds fr every square ft increase/decrease in the wing area; and tw punds fr every increase/decrease in engine hrsepwer. Flying the Missin Using X-Plane, lad and cnfigure yur custm design airplane: Frm the drp dwn menu, select Lcatin tab t set the lcatin t KPAE, Paine Field Snhmish Cunty Airprt in Everett, WA, n runway 29 (see figure 1, n page 3). Set the desired ttal fuel and paylad weights by selecting Aircraft Fuel & Weight frm the drp dwn menu. NOTE: maximum paylad is limited t an aircraft ttal weight which can nt exceed the maximum allwable weight prescribed by the design (see figure 2, n page 3). Recrd a screen sht f the Fuel/Paylad pp-up screen which must be included with yur cntest entry sheet (see figure 2, n page 3). Using X-Plane, frm the Special Menu drp dwn select Fly t Learn - Aviatin Challenge. Read the instructins n the pp-up screen and enter the fllwing infrmatin: Departure airprt ID: KPAE (Paine Field) Arrival airprt ID: KAWO (Arlingtn Municipal Airprt) Distance weighting pwer: 1.0 Paylad weighting pwer: 2.0 Fuel weighting pwer: 1.0 Time weighting pwer: 1.0 Using X-Plane, fly the cmpetitin missin: Page 1 f 5
The timer starts when the Fly T Learn Aviatin Challenge windw clses. Fly t KAWO Arlingtn Municipal Airprt. T receive a valid scre, d nt run ff the runway (departure r landing) and d nt pen any interface windws t adjust aircraft r envirnmental cnditins. Yu may NOT make any changes t the weather cnditins r the airplane during the missin frm takeff t landing including paylad, weight & balance, fuel, etc. The sftware will calculate yur challenge scre based n paylad delivered divided by the time and fuel cnsumed by the airplane t cmplete the missin which is a successful landing at KAWO. Recrd a screen sht f the Aviatin Challenge Scre pp-up screen which must be included with yur cntest entry sheet (see figure 3, n page 4). Judges must be able t replicate yur flight using the infrmatin yu prvide with the design challenge cntest submittal frm. JUDGING CRITERIA The panel f judges will evaluate the fllwing factrs in determining the winner f the GAMA/Build A Plane 2017 Aviatin Design Challenge (the percentage that each is wrth in calculating yur verall place in the cmpetitin is listed in parantheses): 1) A ne-page typed summary f the design changes yur team made t the airplane (20 percent) 2) A typed checklist that describes the steps the team tk t make a successful flight, frm take-ff t landing (e.g., Did the team use flaps? If s, when? At what altitude did the airplane fly?) (5 percent) 3) Yur Aviatin Challenge scre frm the flight simulatr cmpetitin sftware (65 percent) 4) Three vides submitted thrughut the cmpetitin (10 percent) SUBMIT T enter the Aviatin Design Challenge, each team is required t submit the fllwing infrmatin t STEMcmpetitin@gama.aer n later than April 21, 2017. NOTE: ALL dcuments/electrnic files shuld include yur schl name in the file name. 1) A cmpleted entry frm (see Attachment A n page 5) 2) The.acf file f yur custm-designed virtual airplane 3) A ne-paged typed summary f the design changes yur team made t the airplane 4) A typed checklist that describes the steps the team tk t make a successful flight, frm take-ff t landing (e.g., Did the team use flaps? If s, when? At what altitude did the airplane fly?) 5) A screen sht f the Weight & Balance & Fuel pp-up screen prir t yur challenge flight 6) A screen shtf the Aviatin Challenge Scre pp-up screen(nte: the scres must be readable) 7) A vide that shws the students explaining, in their wn wrds, what they learned during the cmpetitin, hw they applied that knwledge in mdifying the airplane, and hw this cmpetitin has changed, if at all, their view f the aviatin field and pursuing a pssible career in aviatin. All vides shuld be less than tw minutes lng and can be either emailed t STEMcmpetitin@gama.aer r can be prvided via a link fr dwnlad. NOTE: All infrmatin must be submitted t STEMcmpetitin@gama.aer and becmes the prperty f GAMA, which may use it in future prmtinal material. Page 2 f 5
