In and around... BRADFORD ON AVON Bradford on Avon is sometimes described in guidebooks as the last outpost of the Cotswolds, or a kind of mini-bath but such shorthand descriptions capture only a fraction of the charm and variety of this unique town. Once seen, never forgotten, Bradford on Avon is an architectural treasure chest. Its ranks of dwellings, from tiny weavers cottages to grand clothiers houses, its handsome public buildings and places of worship, its ancient alleyways and modern estates reflect the town s development from Iron Age settlement to 21 st century working town. Winding through it all is the River Avon from the weir at Greenland Mill through the centre of the town, where the Saxons drove their carts across the broad ford that gave the early settlement its name, and on past Barton Farm, the magnificent 14 th century Tithe Barn and the country park towards Bath, Bristol and the sea. The river gives Bradford its shape carving out the valley described a century ago by the poet Edward Thomas: The town hill rises from off the water, covered as with scales with stone houses of countless varieties of blackened grey stone and many gables, and so steep that the roofs of one horizontal street are only just higher than the doorsteps of the one above. Today, the houses are still there having largely escaped the worst efforts of the 1960s town planners who flattened Barton Bridge over the River Avon huge areas of nearby Bath but the stone is now pale gold, not grey and soot-blackened. The endlessly smoking mill chimneys noted by Thomas as he sat by the river one afternoon in 1913 have long since fallen into disuse, as first the wool trade, and then the rubber industry that replaced it, moved out and away. The huge complex of former wool mills and factories that once dominated the heart of Bradford have been redeveloped into a brand new centre of residential and commercial premises, but the town s industrial history is stamped on almost every street. Bradford was an important centre of the cloth industry from the 14 th century, when the first Flemish weavers arrived in the west country to pass on their trade secrets, right up until the 19 th century.
