Slopes range from 0 to 15 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 23 inches, and mean annual air temperature is about 43 degrees F. TYPICAL PEDON: Poinsett silty clay loam - on a northeast facing, 3 percent slope in a cultivated field. When described the soil was moist throughout. GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Poinsett soils are nearly level to gently rolling on uplands having plane to convex slopes with gradients of 0 to 9 percent. Poinsett soils formed in calcareous silty glacial till. Mean annual air temperature ranges from 38 to 48 degrees F, and mean annual precipitation ranges from 17 to 24 inches. Growing season is about 120 to 130 days; average growing season precipitation ranges from 15 to 18 inches; and growing degree days are about 2500 to 2900. Elevation ranges from 1000 to 2150 feet. GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Barnes, Forman, Heimdal, Oldham, Parnell, Sinai and Waubay soils. Barnes soils are fine-loamy and are on adjacent upland slopes. Forman soils have argillic horizons and are on adjacent slopes. Heimdal soils are coarse-loamy and are on similar landscape positions as the Poinsett soils. Waubay soils have mollic epipedons more than 16 inches thick and are in swales and shallow drainageways. Oldham, Parnell, and Sinai soils have fine textured control sections. In addition, the Oldham and Parnell soils are more poorly drained and are in depressions. Sinai soils are on somewhat higher lying icewalled lake positions in the silty glacial drift landscape. DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Surface runoff is low or medium. Permeability is moderate. BUSE SERIES - Soil # 741B Complex The Buse series consists of very deep, well drained soils that formed in loamy glacial till on moraines. These soils have moderate and moderately slow permeability. TYPICAL PEDON: Langhei loam with a 14 percent convex slope on a glacial moraine in a cultivated field. GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: The Langhei soils are on slightly to strongly convex-shaped positions on undulating to hilly or steep slopes, typically in rugged, complex glacial moraines. Slope ranges from 2 to 55 percent. They most commonly are on the upper slopes. In the less sloping areas they are in small areas, commonly 3 acres or less in size, but on the more sloping areas they commonly are the dominant soil. The Langhei soils formed in calcareous loam or clay loam glacial till that is Late Wisconsinan in age. The mean annual air temperature ranges from about 38 to 45 degrees F.
