TYPICAL PEDON: Poinsett silty clay loam - on a northeast facing, 3 percent slope in a cultivated field. When described the soil was moist throughout. GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Poinsett soils are nearly level to gently rolling on uplands having plane to convex slopes with gradients of 0 to 9 percent. Poinsett soils formed in calcareous silty glacial till. Mean annual air temperature ranges from 38 to 48 degrees F, and mean annual precipitation ranges from 17 to 24 inches. Growing season is about 120 to 130 days; average growing season precipitation ranges from 15 to 18 inches; and growing degree days are about 2500 to 2900. Elevation ranges from 1000 to 2150 feet. GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Barnes, Forman, Heimdal, Oldham, Parnell, Sinai and Waubay soils. Barnes soils are fine-loamy and are on adjacent upland slopes. Forman soils have argillic horizons and are on adjacent slopes. Heimdal soils are coarse-loamy and are on similar landscape positions as the Poinsett soils. Waubay soils have mollic epipedons more than 16 inches thick and are in swales and shallow drainageways. Oldham, Parnell, and Sinai soils have fine textured control sections. In addition, the Oldham and Parnell soils are more poorly drained and are in depressions. Sinai soils are on somewhat higher lying icewalled lake positions in the silty glacial drift landscape. Elevation above sea level ranges from 1,000 to 1,600 feet. GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Aastad, Aazdahl, Barnes, Flom, Forman, Formdale, Hamerly, Langhei, Sioux, Svea, Vienna, and Waukon soils. Aastad and Svea soils have cambic horizons and thicker mollic epipedons. Barnes, Flom, Forman, Vienna and Waukon soils have Bw or Bt horizons, thicker sola and lack free calcium carbonate in the upper part of solum. Hamerly soils have calcic horizons and have lower chroma in the upper part of the C horizon. Langhei soils do not have a mollic epipedon. Sioux soils are coarse textured and excessively drained. HANTHO SERIES - Soil # 497 The Hantho series consists of very deep, moderately well drained soils that formed in silty glacial lacustrine sediments or loess on glacial lake plains and till-floored lake plains. These soils have moderate permeability and slopes that range from 1 to 3 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 24 inches. Mean annual air temperature is about 44 degrees F. TYPICAL PEDON: Hantho silt loam with a plane slope of 1 percent on a silty mantled till plain in a cultivated field. GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: These soils have slightly concave or plane slopes with a gradient of 1 to 3 percent. They are on glacial lake plains and till-floored lake plains. These soils formed in silty glacial lacustrine sediments or loess. Typically these sediments overlie calcareous till. The mean annual air temperature ranges from 40 to 45 degrees F. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 19 to 27 inches. Frost-free days range from 110 to 150. Elevation above sea level ranges from 785 to 1950 feet. GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Perella, Quam, Rothsay and Zell soils which formed in similar sediments and are members of a drainage sequence with the Hantho soils. Poorly drained Perella soils are on adjacent flats. Very poorly drained Quam soils are in depressions. The well drained Rothsay and Zell soils are on higher lying or more sloping terrain. GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: The Buse soils have slightly to strongly convex slopes in glacial moraines. Slope gradient ranges from 3 to 60 percent. The Buse soils formed in calcareous till of the Wisconsinan Age. Mean annual air temperature is about 36 to 45 degrees F. Mean annual precipitation DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Moderately well drained. Surface runoff is slow. Permeability is moderate. The apparent seasonal high water table is at 3 to 5 feet at some time during March to June in most years.
Soil Descriptions PARNELL SERIES - Soil # 34 The Parnell series consists of very deep, very poorly drained and poorly drained soils that formed in water-sorted sediments from glacial drift in depressions, swales and drainageways on glacial moraines. These soils have slow permeability. Slopes range from 0 to 3 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 20 inches; and mean annual air temperature is about 41 degrees F. TYPICAL PEDON: Parnell silty clay loam with a nearly level slightly concave slope in a depression in a glacial moraine. GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Parnell soils are in depressions, swales and drainageways on ground and end moraines. Slope gradients are 0 to 3 percent. Parnell soils formed mostly in water-sorted sediments from glacial till. Calcareous loam or clay loam glacial till commonly underlies these sediments. Mean annual air temperature is 38 to 45 degrees F. Mean annual precipitation is 16 to 24 inches thick. Frost-free days range from 120 to 160 days. Elevation above sea level ranges from 1000 to 1600 feet. GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Aastad, Aazdahl, Badger, Balaton, Barnes, Flom, Forman, Formdale, Hamerly, Poinsett, Svea, Vallers and Waukon soils. These soils formed in loamy glacial till and are on higher lying or more sloping terrain or both. Aastad, Aazdahl, Balaton and Svea soils are moderately well drained; Badger and Hamerly soils are somewhat poorly drained; Barnes, Forman, Formdale, Poinsett and Waukon soils are well drained; and Flom and Vallers soils are poorly drained. DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Very poorly drained and poorly drained. Surface runoff is very low on the poorly drained phase and ponded on the very poorly drained phase. Permeability is slow. In most years a seasonal high water table is at a depth of 0.5 to 1.5 feet during the period November to June for the poorly drained phase and +1 to.5 during the period January to December for the very poorly drained phase. loamy calcareous glacial till within depths of 60 inches in some pedons. The mean annual temperature ranges from about 38 to 46 degrees F. Mean annual precipitation from about 22 to 27 inches. Frost-free days range from 90 to 150. Elevation above sea level ranges from 700 to 1950 feet. GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Hantho soils and Perella, Quam, and Zell soils, which are members of a toposequence with Rothsay soils. Somewhat excessive drained Zell soils are mapped adjacent to Rothsay on slightly higher terrain or steep slopes. Moderately well drained Hantho soils are on less sloping terrain and have a thicker mollic epipedon. Poorly drained Perella soils are on nearly level lower-lying terrain. Very poorly drained Quam soils are in depressions. DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Runoff is slow or medium; permeability is moderate. DOLAND SERIES - Soil # 1295B The Doland series consists of well drained moderately permeable soils that formed in a silty mantle and in underlying loamy glacial till or entirely in the silty mantle. These soils are on glacial moraines and have slopes ranging from 0 to 18 percent. Mean annual temperature is about 44 degrees F, and mean annual precipitation is about 21 inches. TYPICAL PEDON: Doland silt loam with a slightly convex slope of 2 percent on a ground moraine in a cultivated field. GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: The Doland soils have plane or slightly convex slopes on level or undulating glacial moraines. Slopes range from 0 to 18 percent in gradient. They formed in a mantle of silty sediments and loamy, calcareous, glacial till of Late Wisconsinan Age or entirely in the silty mantle. The silty sediments are primarily loess, but in some places they are lacustrine. The mean annual temperature is about 43 to 48 degrees F, and the mean annual precipitation is 20 to 24 inches. ROTHSAY SERIES - Soil # 290B The Rothsay series consists of very deep, well drained soils that formed in silty glacial lacustrine sediments or loess on glacial lake plains and moraines. These soils have moderate permeability and have slopes of 1 to 18 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 24 inches, and mean annual temperature is 44 degrees F. TYPICAL PEDON: Rothsay silt loam with a 4 percent convex slope on a glacial lake plain in a cultivated field. GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Rothsay soils are on convex or plane slopes with gradients of 1 to 18 percent. These soils formed in silty calcareous deposits 4 to 10 feet thick that are of lacustrine or eolian origin. These sediments are underlain by GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Tara, McIntosh, Perella, and Quam soils, which are members of drainage sequence with Doland soils. Moderately well drained Tara soils are downslope. Moderately well and somewhat poorly drained McIntosh soils are on low rises. Poorly drained Perella soils are on nearby level terrain. Very poorly drained Quam soils are in depressions. All of those soils formed in thicker silty sediments than Doland soils. DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Surface runoff is slow to rapid. Permeability is moderate.
LANGHEI SERIES - Soil # 942C2 The Langhei series consists of very deep well drained soils formed in calcareous glacial till on glacial moraines. These soils have moderate or moderately slow permeability. Slopes range from 2 to 55 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 21 inches. Mean annual air temperature is about 42 degrees F. TYPICAL PEDON: Langhei loam with a 14 percent convex slope on a glacial moraine in a cultivated field. GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: The Langhei soils are on slightly to strongly convex-shaped positions on undulating to hilly or steep slopes, typically in rugged, complex glacial moraines. Slope ranges from 2 to 55 percent. They most commonly are on the upper slopes. In the less sloping areas they are in small areas, commonly 3 acres or less in size, but on the more sloping areas they commonly are the dominant soil. The Langhei soils formed in calcareous loam or clay loam glacial till that is Late Wisconsinan in age. The mean annual air temperature ranges from about 38 to 45 degrees F. The mean annual precipitation ranges from about 16 to 27 inches. Frost-free days range from 90 to 150. Elevation above sea level ranges from 1000 to 2000 feet. GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: The Langhei soils are associated with the well drained Buse, Barnes, Doland, and Waukon soils on less convex slopes, the moderately well drained Svea and Hamerly soils on lower lying concave slopes, the poorly drained Vallers and Flom soils in drainageways, and the very poorly drained Parnell soils in depressions. DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Runoff is medium to very rapid. Permeability is moderate or moderately slow. BARNES SERIES - Soil # 942C2 The Barnes series consists of very deep, well drained, moderately or moderately slowly permeable soils that formed in loamy till. These soils are on till plains and moraines and have slopes ranging from 0 to 25 percent. Mean annual air temperature is about 42 degrees F, and mean annual precipitation is about 17 inches. TYPICAL PEDON: Barnes loam in a cultivated field. GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Barnes soils are on level to hilly till plains and moraines. Slope gradients typically are 2 to 6 percent, but range from 0 to 25 percent. The soils formed in loamy till. The climate is cool subhumid with a mean annual air temperature of 36 to 48 degrees F, and mean annual precipitation of 15 to 25 inches. WAUBAY SERIES - Soil # 338 The Waubay series consists of very deep, moderately well drained soils formed in local silty glacialfluvial deposits on flats or footslopes, in slight depressions and in swales. These soils have moderate permeability. Slopes range from 0 to 6 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 21 inches, and mean annual temperature is about 42 degrees F. TYPICAL PEDON: Waubay silt loam - under cultivation. GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Waubay soils are level to gently sloping and are in slight depressions and swales, and on flats and footslopes on uplands. Slopes are plane or concave with gradients of 0 to 6 percent. The soils formed in calcareous silty glacialfluvial deposits. Mean annual temperature ranges from 42 to 48 degrees F, and mean annual precipitation ranges from 17 to 26 inches. Growing season is about 120 to 160 days; average growing season precipitation ranges from 15 to 18 inches; and growing degree days are about 2500 to 3000.
