The Edenton Tea Party was the eariest organized women s poitica action in American history. On October 25, 1774, fifty-one women in Edenton formed an aiance whoeheartedy supporting the American cause against taxation without representation. Learn more about this important event at the Peneope Barker House Wecome Center. Harriet Jacobs Edenton native, escaped save, aboitionist and writer hid here for seven years as a fugitive. Her memoir, Incidents in the Life of a Save Gir, was one of the first narratives about the strugge for freedom by a femae save. Joseph Hewes The first coonia Secretary of the Navy, Hewes aso signed the Decaration of Independence. Chowan wi participate in the 350th Anniversary Ceebration of the founding of North Caroina s Abemare region in 2018. Chowan County was very important to the deveopment of North Caroina s and, indeed, the nation s history. The promise of persona iberties and the estabishment of a near-utopian society attracted setters whose descendants woud become Coonia eaders. Chowan s popuation during the frontier era incuded rebes and peope of questionabe character such as Backbeard and Governor Chares Eden doing business together with Quakers and the argest free popuation of backs and muattos in the New Word.
Sites to Visit... 2 1767 Chowan Courthouse The most intact Coonia courthouse in America, the structure has been restored and is now open for guided tours and community events. Joseph Hewes, a signer of the Decaration of Independence, was one of the commissioners appointed to raise money for its construction. Judges James Irede and Samue Johnston, prominent Revoutionary patriots, heard cases here. The Courthouse Green runs from the Courthouse to the Revoutionary War cannon fronting Edenton Bay, and is ined with historic private homes.
