MARKET REPORT August 2018 Monday 13 th Prime Stock Market 73 PRIME CATTLE & BARREN COWS 10.45AM Auctioneer: Simon Alford 07789 980203 Prime Cattle to 211ppk & 1517 Barren Cows to 138ppk & 1240 Monday saw Prime Cattle top at 211ppk for young but shapely South Devon steers from Shillingham Farms of Saltash with others rising to 210 and 205ppk. A nicely finished Limousin steer (25m) from Mary Curtis of Cadeleigh drew 206ppk and 1319 whilst the better of a couple of grand South Devon cross steers (28m) from Alan Luscombe of Bickington realised a massive 1517 (906kg x 168ppk). Barren Cows again lower money, with any farm assured animals definitely selling to a premium. Top price was 138ppk and 1240 given for a big 900kg South Devon cow from Brian Vallance of Bickington whilst a black Limousin cross barrener from Jonathan Musgrave of Yealmpton also hit 138ppk. Well covered sorts from Philip brown of Cullompton saw 132ppk ( 1009) for a Stabiliser and 125ppk for smart Limousin ( 968) followed by Blondes at 117ppk for Michael Scanes of Cheriton Bishop, an amount also given to Dave Pollard, Black Dog with a Simmental, David Slade, Chagford also with a Simmental and Yarmleigh Farm of Crediton with a Friesian cow. Vendors are kindly reminded to inform us of their entries for Monday s Prime Cattle and Barren Cow auction in advance to enable potential purchasers to be advised of likely numbers. Please contact the Market Office (01392 251261) or Robert Armstrong over the weekend (07791484290) or robert.armstrong@kivells.com Also note, TB pre movement tests are NOT REQUIRED for this sale. 2409 SHEEP 9.30AM Auctioneers: Russell Steer 07788 318701 & Ian Caunter 07813 068935 Lambs to 110 & 208ppk Cull Ewes to 116.50 & Rams to 113 1007 PRIME SPRING LAMBS Just on 1000 lambs met with a better trade especially for the heavier and better bred and finished types with five pens achieving three figures. Steve & Rachel Stamp of Highbridge had a Texel at 110 followed by son Harry with a Dorset Down at 102, Bill Speak of North Tawton sold two pens of overweights at 105 & 100 and Kevin & Becky Matthews of Launceston had a pair at 100. 50-51kg lambs sold to 97 for both Phillip Rowell of Crockernwell and John Camp of Totnes, 95 for both Bill Speak and John Simmons of Poltimore closely followed by Jack Frankum of Whitestone at 94.80. 49kg lambs sold to 94.20 for Richard Rogers of South Milton and 92 for Cameron Zab of Widecombe whilst a double pen of 48kg lambs sold at 94 for Greendown Farm of Umberleigh and 47kgs reached 94 (200ppk) for Tom Yandle of Mamhead and 93 again for John Simmons who also had 46kgs at 91. Some great 45kg lambs sold to 92.50 (206ppk) for Ray & Sylvia Toms of Cheriton Bishop, 92 (204ppk) for Sally Thompson of Exwick, 90.50 (201ppk) for J Bullock of Down St Mary and 90 (200ppk) for Ellen Yandle of Mamhead. 44kg lambs sold to 89.20 (203ppk) for Gary & Ashley Retter of Cheriton Bishop and 87 for Tom Yandle whilst some smart 43kg Beltex lambs from Steve & Rachel Stamp of Highbridge rose to 88 (205ppk). Completing the ten pens over 200ppk and topping the sale at 208ppk was Derek Arnold of Morchard Road with Texel, Berrichon and Beltex crosses that weighed 42kgs and sold at 87.50 with others from the same good Weight Top s Per P.P.K Head Average s Per P.P.K Head home at 205 & 204ppk. Although I say it nearly every week I will continue to say that the majority of lighter lambs would be better sold on a Friday in front of a keen crowd of buyers. The exception to this are Coryton s Sam Friend s smart 38kg fed lambs that climbed to 70.50, P Purser s 39kg lambs that made 66.50 and Abel Bros 36kg fed lambs that realised 65.80. SQQ was four pence better at 181ppk whilst all in was better still at 183ppk. 1377 CULL EWES & 25 RAMS 1402 cull sheep were similar to the previous few weeks with the heaviest and best fleshed selling well, whilst leaner, plainer and lighter sorts meet more resistance. Best today at 116.50 for both Sue Cleave of Christow and Russell & Alison Retter of Cotleigh with big Suffolk type ewes, whilst both I & S Robertson of Exeter and P & M Stoyle & Sons of East Village achieved 115 with their best pens. Gary & Ashley Retter made 114 of their best followed closely by both Sue Veysey of Cullompton and Tony Ash of North Tawton at 112, both Brian Griffiths of Burrington and Steve Dennis of Bow at 111 and Steve & Rachel Stamp sold two pens of Continental ewes at 110. Plenty of other crossbred ewes over the 100 mark including some leaner sorts that look dearer than the previous few weeks. Mules and Masham s into the mid 80 s once again and the best of the rams sold to 113 for a Charollais for Steve & Rachel Lang of Plympton. Lean and lightweight ewes continue to come out in force, trading from 30 to 60 depending on breed and cover whilst those really plain ewes continue to sell from 5 to 35. Overall average throughout is just over 60.
