DAY 1 : NOWRA TO COONABARABRAN D Wednesday 27 August 2014: Welcome to our tour to Queensland s outback and tropical north. This morning we depart home and have a travel day as we make our way north on the first leg of our journey. Our overnight destination is Coonabarabran where, upon arrival, we ll check in and freshen up for dinner. (Lunch own cost en-route, dinner in motel) Matthew Flinders Motor Inn Coonabarabran - 02 6842 1766 DAY 2 : COONABARABRAN TO GOONDIWINDI B D Thursday 28 August 2014 Following a hearty breakfast we join the Newell Highway and travel via Narrabri to our stop in Moree. Here we visit the Moree Artesian Bore Baths. The natural temperature of the baths is 110 degrees Fahrenheit, a great temperature to relieve any aching muscles. Following some free time to buy some lunch and enjoy the baths, we continue through to our next overnight stay of Goondiwindi. (Breakfast & dinner in motel, lunch at own cost) Jolly Swagman Motor Inn Goondiwindi - 07 4671 4560 DAY 4 : ROMA TO CARNARVON GORGE B L D Saturday 30 August 2014 This morning we have time to visit the Big Rig Tourist Complex which pays tribute to the local oil and gas industry. Located on the outskirts of town at an old oil derrick, we ll enjoy a tour of the Oil Patch, featuring a giant 1920 Emsco Rig, the last steam driven rig in Australia. Departing Roma we travel north on the Carnarvon Highway through to Carnarvon Gorge, stopping to enjoy our picnic lunches en-route. Primarily created by water erosion, Carnarvon Gorge is around 30kms long and 600m deep at the mouth, located in the Carnarvon National Park. We are staying in cabins at the Wilderness Lodge for the next two nights. (Breakfast & dinner in motel, picnic lunches en-route) Carnarvon Gorge Wilderness Lodge - 07 4984 4503 DAY 5 : CARNARVON GORGE B L D Sunday 31 August 2014 We are joined this morning by a local guide who will help us explore this rugged area. Carnarvon Gorge features dramatic gorge scenery as well as many aboriginal rock carvings and paintings. The gorge also contains an abundance of animal and birdlife and scenic variety with sandstone cliffs, moss gardens, deep pools and rare palms and ferns. Lunch is back at the resort followed by an afternoon at leisure to further explore, take a stroll or to simply relax in the beautiful surrounds (All meals at Lodge). Carnarvon Gorge Wilderness Lodge - 07 4984 4503 DAY 3 : GOONDIWINDI TO ROMA B L D Friday 29 August 2014 This morning we reboard the coach and head west to St George, located on the banks of the Balonne River. The town was named by Major Thomas Mitchell who crossed the river on St George s Day in April 1846. Upon arrival we head out to Riversands Winery for a vineyard tour, tastings and lunch. This afternoon we continue through to Roma. Upon arrival we check into our accommodation and settle in for dinner. (Breakfast & dinner in motel, lunch in St George) Roma Explorers Inn, Roma - 07 4620 1400 DAY 6 : CARNARVON GORGE TO EMERALD B D Monday 1 September 2014 We depart the gorge this morning and continue north on the Great Inland Way via Rolleston, Springsure and Fairbairn Dam for a look. We then continue into Emerald in time to buy some lunch. This afternoon we head to Rubyvale to visit Miners Heritage, Australia s largest underground

sapphire walk-in mine experience. For those of us who don t want to go underground, there is a chance to fossick to find a treasure of our own. Next we check into our overnight accommodation and settle in for dinner. (Breakfast & dinner in motel, lunch at own cost) Western Gateway Motor Inn, Emerald - 07 4980 0500 DAY 7 : EMERALD TO CHARTERS TOWERS B L D Tuesday 2 September 2014 We have a travel day today making our way along the Great Inland Way, also known as the Gregory Developmental Road. We ll stop for a picnic lunch break as we drive north. Our overnight stop is in Charters Towers - a gold mining city that is big on history and character. On arrival we check into our accommodation and enjoy an early dinner before we travel to Towers Hill Lookout. The lookout gives stunning views of the area and many interesting and factual storyboards, so we can learn about the region s colourful past. It then comes to life with a film screened in the Amphitheatre, called Ghosts after Dark, we then return to our accommodation. (Breakfast & dinner in motel, picnic lunch included) Cattleman s Rest Motor Inn, Charters Towers - 07 4787 3555 DAY 10 : MOUNT ISA B D Friday 5 September 2014 Our touring today begins at the $12 million Outback at Isa Complex. Here, we head underground on a thrilling Hard Times Mine Tour this fully guided tour descends to the 1.2kms of tunnels in an Alamac cage, lowered from an historic headframe. Wearing protective clothing, including a miner s cap and lamp, we are led by knowledgeable miners who will give us a real insight into working underground. Above ground is a one-stop shop offering exciting and diverse activities - from the fascinating Laboratory Tours at the Riversleigh Fossil Centre to the inspiring gallery exhibits and films inside the Isa Experience. (Breakfast & dinner in motel, lunch own expense) Ibis Styles Verona Mount Isa - 07 4743 3024 DAY 8 : CHARTERS TOWERS TO WINTON B L D Wednesday 3 September 2014 After breakfast we make our way to Hughenden to visit the Flinders Discovery Centre. The Centre holds an excellent array of visitor information on local attractions. Here we can step back in time inside the museum and see the exhibition of dinosaur fossils from around the world and a growing display of fossils from the local area. We enjoy our lunch at the Royal Hotel Resort. Back on coach we head south to Winton. It was in this area that Banjo Paterson wrote his famous poem about the swagman and the jolly jumbuck and Waltzing Matilda was first heard in a pub in Winton. We visit the Waltzing Matilda Centre. The Billabong Courtyard is our introduction to the Waltzing Matilda Centre. Trace the history of Waltzing Matilda as it chronicles the growth of a nation - and enjoy a unique light and sound show. We check-in to our accommodation and have time to freshen up for dinner after a great day of touring. (Breakfast & dinner in the motel, lunch at Royal Hotel Resort) Boulder Opal Motel, Winton - 07 4657 1211 DAY 11 : MOUNT ISA TO KARUMBA B L D Saturday 6 September 2014 We have another early start this morning as we retrace our steps to Cloncurry then join the Burke Developmental Road to Normanton. Our destination today is Karumba where we stay for the next two nights. Dinner will be served at the Sunset Tavern. (Breakfast in motel, lunch at Burke & Wills Roadhouse, dinner at Sunset Tavern) End of the Road Motel, Karumba - 07 4745 9599 DAY 12 : KARUMBA B D Sunday 7 September 2014 We have the morning at leisure. This afternoon, we take in the sights of Karumba, not that the town is that large! Karumba is the easiest point of access to the Gulf. The town is located on the mouth of the Norman River and is now the centre of the prawning industry in the Gulf of Carpentaria. We then take a tour of the Barramundi Discovery Centre. Late afternoon we board the Croc & Crab Cruise to watch the sky and sea turn into fire with this peaceful and relaxing cruise. We ll sip on a glass of wine, taste some freshly cooked Gulf Prawns and a tropical fruit platter as the sun sets. Back on dry land, we once again enjoy dinner at the Sunset Tavern, Karumba Point. (Breakfast at motel, lunch own expense and arrangements, dinner at Sunset tavern) End of the Road Motel, Karumba - 07 4745 9599 DAY 9 : WINTON TO MOUNT ISA B L D Thursday 4 September 2014 After breakfast in the motel we are on our way again, heading towards Cloncurry. We pass through Kynuna which, in the early days was a staging post for Cobb and Co Coaches. Lunch today is at McKinlay also a Cobb and Co staging post but more recently the town has become known as the home of the Walkabout Creek Hotel. This afternoon we visit John Flynn Place which commemorates the founding of the Royal Flying Doctor Service. There is an art gallery, cultural centre and the RFDS Museum located here. DAY 13 : KARUMBA TO GEORGETOWN B L D Monday 8 September 2014 After breakfast, we return to the historical town of Normanton which lies just south of the Gulf of Carpentaria, we take a look at the Normanton Railway Station which is a classic example of Victorian architecture. We Board the Historic Golflander Train for our journey down to Chitters Camp before heading east through Blackbull to Croydon. This old gold mining town was once the biggest in the Gulf and today it still has some interesting buildings. It was reckoned that there were once 50,000 gold mines in the area and reminders of these are scattered all around the countryside. We stop for lunch at the Croydon Club Hotel. Following lunch we continue through to Georgetown. We arrive with time to freshen up and relax before dinner. (Breakfast & dinner motel, lunch at Croydon Hotel) Latara Resort Motel, Georgetown 07 4062 1190 its pleasant climate and the volcanic activities, all having shaped large parts of its landscape. One of the most dramatic examples of this is Lake Barrine a beautiful volcanic Crater Lake. We enjoy our lunch in the Tea House followed by a cruise on Lake Barrine. Next the small town of Yungaburra awaits our arrival. Located just out of town is The Curtain Fig Tree. This is the most amazing tree you are ever likely to see. It is a picture of a century of natural history a unique example of nature s unpredictability and power. We visit the Malanda s Gallo Dairyland where we enjoy a talk on the cheese making and some cheese tasting overlooking the dairy farm. Following our day of touring we check in to our accommodation with time to freshen up before dinner. (Breakfast & dinner at motel, Lunch at Tea House) Atherton Rainforest Motor Inn 07 4095 4141 DAY 14 : COBBOLD GORGE B L D Tuesday 9 September 2014 We have a leisurely start to the day before our guided tour of Cobbold Gorge. Cobbold Gorge is unique, hidden away within the rugged sandstone formations of North Queensland. This gorge is extremely narrow, closing to a mere two meters wide in places, with spectacular 30 meter cliffs on either side. The overall length of the gorge is about six kilometres and consists of a series of water-holes and rock falls, however only the last 500 meters is accessible by flat bottom boat. Lunch is provided near the water s edge at the gorge. Returning to the village mid-afternoon, we have the rest of the day to relax. (Breakfast & dinner at the motel, lunch included in cruise) Latara Resort Motel, Georgetown 07 4062 1190 DAY 15 : GEORGETOWN TO UNDARA B L D Wednesday 10 September 2014 This morning we visit the Terrestrial Centre which is home to the Ted Elliot Mineral Collection. The collection contains over 4,500 mineral specimens in a myriad of fascinating colours and shapes. We travel through Mt. Surprise to Undara where we enjoy a late lunch. This afternoon, we have arranged a tour of the Undara Lava Tubes to view these amazing underground tunnels. Formed thousands of years ago when the volcano Undara erupted, the tunnels were gouged out by the lava flow. We sleep in specially restored antique railway carriages (Please note that the railway carriages share a facilities block.) (Breakfast & dinner in motel, Lunch included) Undara Lava Lodge, Undara - 07 4097 1411 DAY 16 : UNDARA TO ATHERTON TABLELANDS B L D Thursday 11 September 2014 We leave Undara and head to the special Atherton Tablelands. The Atherton Tablelands is a rather unique place in Australia. What makes it so special is the combination of its geographic location in the Tropics, DAY 17 : ATHERTON TABLELANDS TO CAIRNS B D Friday 12 September 2014 This morning we drive to Tolga to visit the Woodworks Gallery. This prestigious woodworking centre showcases a superb collection of Australian woodwork and craft. From here we make our way to Mareeba to enjoy a tour and morning tea at Jaques Australian Coffee. We depart the area and travel to the village of Kuranda. Perched above Cairns on the top of the Range and surrounded by World Heritage Listed Rain Forest the town is full of arts and craft shops, and a market which we have time to enjoy. This afternoon, we board the historic Kuranda Scenic Railway from the famous tropical plant clad Kuranda Station, for the spectacular ride down the range back to the coast. Our train journey takes us through the magnificent Barron Falls National Park. We check-in to our accommodation and can settle in as this will be our base for the next 3 nights. (Breakfast & dinner in motel, lunch own expense and arrangements) For people joining the tour today, you will be transferred from Cairns airport to the hotel. Freshen up and join the group for dinner tonight.

DAY 18 : CAIRNS B L D Saturday 13 September 2014 Today we depart Cairns aboard the Reef Rocket for our visit to Green Island. Travel time to Green Island is 45 minutes from Cairns. We can take part in the many activities available or simply relax on the beach. Our friendly crew will help us organise our activities to make the most of our time on Green Island. We have 4 hours on the island today including a delicious buffet lunch and a ride on the semi-submersible sub which is part of your day s activities. Tonight we are in for an evening with a difference; we are off to the Cairns Night Zoo for dinner and a great night out! Tonight we get the opportunity to experience nocturnal wildlife in the tropics at Cairns one and only Night Zoo. On arrival we enjoy a delicious barbeque dinner of steak, sausages and seafood with fresh garden salads followed by a dessert. After dinner, the guides provide us a torch and lead us into the darkness to meet the creatures of the night. After complimentary cold beer or wine, join in the fun as the guides teach us some famous Aussie Bush Dances. Dance and sing along - it s more fun than you can imagine! (Breakfast in hotel, Lunch at Green Island, dinner Cairns Night Zoo) DAY 19 : FREE DAY IN CAIRNS B Sunday 14 September 2014 Today we have a free day in Cairns to simply just relax, maybe enjoy some retail therapy or some personal sightseeing. (Breakfast in hotel, lunch & dinner own expense and arrangements) ** Please Note: No Singles Will Apply on Days 20-26 DAY 20 : CAIRNS-THURSDAY ISLAND- CAPE YORK B D Monday 15 September 2014 Transfer from selected Cairns accommodation to Cairns airport for your flight to Thursday Island. This flight provides spectacular views of the Coral Sea and The Great Barrier Reef and the uninhabited East Coast wilderness of Cape York Peninsula. On arrival at Thursday Island, you will be taken on an informative guided bus tour of the island and its picturesque Harbour, once home to the romantic pearl lugger fleet. Late afternoon ferry transfer to the mainland, where you will be met by your guide, who will take you to Seisia. Seisia is ideally located for our next few days, being in walking distance from the Seisia Wharf, a famous fishing spot. Our accommodation at Seisia Holiday Park are cottages with ensuite facilities. Seisia Holiday Park - 07 4069 3243 DAY 21 : CAPE YORK - SOMERSET B L D Tuesday 16 September 2014 An unforgettable day! Stand at the very top of mainland Australia. We then visit Somerset (road conditions permitted), once the home of the legendary Jardine family and government outpost established in 1864. We have lunch on the palm fringed Anchorage Beach, which overlooks the Albany Passage. A walk on the beach will complete your day before returning to Seisia. DAY 22 : CAPE YORK FRUIT BAT FALLS BRAMWELL STATION B L D Wednesday 17 September 2014 Southward bound, we cross the mighty Jardine River, stopping at Fruit Bat Falls for lunch. Relax, swim and enjoy this unique area with its enchanting waterfall. Travelling along part of the Old Telegraph Track, before we make our way to a true blue, aussie cattle station, Bramwell Station share facilities. Bramwell Station - 07 4060 3237 DAY 23 : BRAMWELL - WEIPA B L D Thursday 18 September 2014 A southerly run through the wilderness with all its varied landscapes to cross the Wenlock River. We head for the shores of the Gulf of Carpentaria and our overnight stop at Weipa, with its view over Albatross Bay. This afternoon there will be the opportunity of a tour of the largest bauxite mine in the world. Our accommodation tonight is at the Heritage Resort ensuite facilities. Heritage Resort - 07 4069 8000 DAY 24 : WEIPA - MUSGRAVE B L D Friday 19 September 2014 We continue south, stopping off at the picturesque Archer River, then on to the historic frontier gold town of Coen. The afternoon finds us arriving at our overnight accommodation at the Old Musgrave Telegraph Station share facilities Musgrave Telegraph Station 07 4060 3229 DAY 25 : MUSGRAVE- LAKEFIELD - COOKTOWN B L D Saturday 20 September 2014 After an early start, we head east towards Princess Charlotte Bay where we traverse the entire length of Lakefield National Park (road conditions permitted). An amalgamation of 3 huge cattle stations, now a haven for the many birds and animals native to this area. Lagoons, billabongs, and wide river lakes are home to both fresh and saltwater crocodiles. Travelling southwards, we continue on to Old Laura Homestead and then cross the Battle Camp Range. This afternoon we explore the old gold port of Cooktown. DAY 27 : FREE DAY IN CAIRNS B D Monday 22 September 2014 Today we have time to ourselves to relax, do some retail therapy or to take in some local tours for the day. (Breakfast & dinner in hotel, lunch own expense and arrangements) DAY 30 : TOWNSVILLE TO AIRLIE BEACH B D Thursday 25 September 2014 After breakfast we visit Reef HQ the world s largest living coral reef aquarium. This aquarium is not only a uniquely North Queensland attraction, it is the education centre for the Great Barrier Reef and a must see for visitors to the region. Following our morning here we continue south through Ayr and Bowen to Airlie Beach. We check into the beautiful Coral Seas Resort which is positioned on absolute oceanfront and just a short stroll via a seaside boardwalk to the enchanting resort village. DAY 28 : CAIRNS TO TOWNSVILLE B L D Tuesday 23 September 2014 Today we say farewell to Cairns and travel south along the coast to reach Babinda Boulders. Surrounded by lush rainforest, the Babinda Boulders is a popular attraction; it is a classic example of the fast flowing tropical creeks in the area. Our destination today is Townsville, so sit back and enjoy the spectacular scenery of this section of the coast. We continue south through Tully, the wettest place in Australia (but only during the wet season!!). We stop for lunch at the Tigers League Club. Off the coast is Hinchinbrook Island Australia s largest island National Park. On our journey south we visit the Frosty Mango a roadside café selling local produce, including a tasty range of tropical fruit ice cream! Late afternoon we arrive into Townsville; the third largest city in Queensland. On arrival we take a scenic drive along The Strand and head up to Castle Hill Lookout for some fantastic views across to Magnetic Island. Our cruise will take us to the spectacular Whitehaven Beach where we ll have a few hours to soak it all up! Our friendly skipper will provide an informative commentary on the history and natural wonders of the area. The waters of Solway Passage lead us to the world famous Whitehaven Beach, a definite must see in the Whitsundays. We can wander along the beach to our own secluded stretch, laze on the beach or cool off in the azure waters. We continue cruising to Daydream Island for a relaxing lunch. Following lunch we have the afternoon at leisure taking in Daydream Village and the highlight, the Living Reef Coral Lagoon, filled with colourful coral and fish life, sharks and stingrays! After our full day of cruising to one of the world s most magnificent island areas we return to Airlie Beach for dinner in the resort. We take a drive to East Mackay and make our way along Town Beach and onto the heart of Mackay. We have time to wander the shops and purchase an early lunch before we continue south through Sarina on our way to Rockhampton. We check-in to our hotel with time to freshen up before dinner. On arrival we stop for lunch at Botanic Gardens. This afternoon we visit Hinkler House Musem we can find details about his remarkable life, his flying carrier, his inventions, some of which are still in use today. We also visit the origin of many Australian hangovers - the Bundaberg Rum Factory before travelling to Hervey Bay where we settle into the Ramada for the next three nights.
