5 Two miles of fun and excitement TAn assortment of neon lights, delicious he Wildwoods Boardwalk. treats, arcade and carnival-style games and amusements, the Wildwoods boardwalk is two miles of fun, food and families. Our 38-block boardwalk boasts more rides than Disneyland everything from kiddie rides to looping roller coasters. More than just rides and games, the boardwalk is also host to an endless number of souvenir shops and eateries offering a delicious mixture of goodies from fresh roasted nuts to fudge straight from the oven. Boardwalk History The Wildwoods boardwalk first came to life in 1899 as a means of keeping sand out of visitors shoes. It stretched a mere 150 feet along Atlantic Avenue and was laid directly in the sand so the city could remove the planks at the end of the summer season. After the first year, it was clear that the Wildwoods boardwalk was a success! It was a place to see the sights and to be seen all at the same time.the boardwalk was regularly frequented by the finestdressed members of high society. Over the next few years, the boardwalk underwent countless developments raising from the sand to an elevated platform, extending both north and south and, as the beach grew, inching closer to the ocean. As the boardwalk grew, it joined with several of the existing entertainment and amusement piers, creating a long promenade perfect for lazy strolls along the ocean or a relaxing ride in a rolling, wicker chair. Around the same time, restaurants, eateries, games and amusements began to dot the boardwalk, attracting thousands throughout the season. Eventually, wicker chairs gave way to the Tram Cars a leftover from the 1939 New York World s Fair and the boardwalk as we know it today began to take shape. New piers were erected, vendors flocked to set up shop at this Southern New Jersey hot spot and roller coasters and thrill rides with each pier competing for the newest and the best rides and amusements were brought in along with miles and miles of neon lights.the rest is history.
