India From the moment you walk on India, the traditional gesture "Namaste" (hands together) will make you feel welcomed, and this greeting summarizes the warmth, hospitality and culture that makes trip to India so memorable. It is often said about India, that it is not a country, but a continent. Stretching from the frozen summits of the Himalayas to the tropical greenery of Kerala, its expansive borders encompass an incomparable range of landscapes, cultures and people. Walk the streets of any Indian city and you ll rub shoulders with representatives of several of the world s great faiths, a multitude of castes and outcastes, fair-skinned, turbanned Punjabis and dark-skinned Tamils. You ll also encounter temple rituals that have been performed since millenniums, Islamic domed mosques erected centuries before the Taj Mahal was ever dreamt of, and echoes of the British Raj on virtually every corner. India s wide variety of attractions include ancient architecture, exotic wildlife, magnificence of the Himalayas, its glorious history, fascinating pilgrimage sites, breathtaking landscapes and unending friendliness and hospitality. It is the birthplace of several famous philosophers and saints. It is a land of faith, where people from across the globe come in search of salvation. Nepal Squeezed between India and Tibet, it stretches from rich subtropical forest to soaring Himalayan peaks: from jungly tiger habitat to the precipitous hunting grounds of the snow leopard. Climbing the hillside of one valley alone you can be sweltering in the shade of a banana palm in the morning, and sheltering from a snowstorm in the afternoon. Nepal s cultural landscape is every bit as diverse as its physical one. Its peoples belong to a host of distinctive ethnic groups, and speak a host of languages. They live in everything from dense, ancient cities erupting with pagoda-roofed Hindu temples to villages perched on dizzying sweeps of rice-farming terraces and dusty highland settlements clustered around tiny monasteries. Religious practices range from Indian-style Hinduism to Tibetan Buddhism and from nature-worship to shamanism The world's highest mountain, Mount Everest, is the most desired destination for mountaineers. Bhutan Located east of the Himalayas between India and Tibet, Bhutan offers a completely different experience. Isolated for a long time from the outside world, Bhutan is slowly and carefully opening its doors to outsiders. The landscapes are pristine and traditional culture is fascinating. The Bhutanese art, dance, drama and music are impregnated with Buddhism. A visit here has all the charm of a trip to the past. Sri Lanka Sri Lanka has seduced travelers for centuries. Marco Polo described it as the finest island of its size in the world, while successive waves of Indian, Arab and European traders and adventurers flocked to its palm-fringed shores, attracted by reports of rare spices, precious stones and magnificent elephants. Poised just above the Equator amid the balmy waters of the Indian Ocean, the island s legendary reputation for natural beauty and plenty has inspired an almost magical regard even in those who have never visited the place. Sri Lanka packs an extraordinary variety of places to visit within its modest physical dimensions, and few islands of comparable size can boast a natural environment of such beauty and diversity. Lapped by the Indian Ocean, the coast is fringed with idyllic and often refreshingly undeveloped beaches, while the interior boasts a compelling variety of landscapes ranging from wildlife-rich lowland jungles. The glories of this early Buddhist civilization continue to provide a benchmark of national identity for the island s Sinhalese population Day 04 I IN PUNAKHA Morning visit Punakha Dzong and Chimi Lhakhang.
