ISLAND LIFE ANCIENT GREECE AND TURKEY ABOARD THE DELUXE M.S. LE BOREAL SEPTEMBER 12 TO 20, 2010 THE UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY ALUMNI ASSOCIATION RESERVE SAVE BY JANUARY 26, EARLY BOOKING SAVINGS $2000 PER 2010 COUPLE!

Dear Alumni & Friends: We are delighted to sponsor ISLAND LIFE IN ANCIENT GREECE AND TURKEY. One of the most popular programs in the innovative VILLAGE LIFE series, it is a great voyage of discovery into the very cradle of Western civilization. Our exclusive itinerary is ideal for exploring this fabulous region s ancient history and appreciating its way of life in our own era. Over 3,000 years ago, the Mycenaeans founded one of the earliest great civilizations on the archipelago stretching from Greece to Turkey across Homer s wine-dark Aegean Sea. Sail the very same waters Ulysses sailed on this seven-night cruise aboard the deluxe small ship M.S. LE BOREAL. Launching in 2010, this 120-cabin vessel showcases a new generation of ship design and technology and will also set unprecedented standards in elegance and comfort. Ports of call in Greece will include the islands of Delos, Mykonos, Santorini, Rhodes, and Pátmos. Along Turkey s Aegean coast, you will have the opportunity to visit the site of fabled Troy, as well as Ephesus, the most spectacularly preserved Greco-Roman city in the world. Among the many EDUCATIONAL AND CULTURAL ENRICHMENTS you will enjoy on this program is our unique VILLAGE FORUM, where residents of Pátmos will share with us their insights into modern life on an ancient isle. To make your experience even more personal and meaningful, we will offer an introduction to simple Greek phrases and their pronunciation. Even using a few will make your interaction with the Greeks that much more enjoyable! Exclusive lectures by faculty will provide more insight into relevant topics such as Greek mythology and Turkish history. And, we will taste the authentic flavors of Greece s cuisine during special cooking demonstrations presented by the ship s master chef and during our daily meals. The warm camaraderie of fellow alumni, the exceptional value of included accommodations and meals, and the comfort of unpacking only once on the superb M.S. LE BOREAL all fused with the thrilling destination of the Aegean make for a richly enticing program. It will sell out quickly, so make your reservation today! Sincerely, Gretchen Bower Program Coordinator Cover: Admire the beauty of Santorini where volcanic cliffs dramatically plunge into the deep turquoise waters of the Aegean Sea. The bronze stag symbol of the Colossus of Rhodes stands at the entrance of Mandraki Harbor.

ISLAND LIFE A WAY OF LIFE IN ANCIENT GREECE AND TURKEY The true character of a maritime culture is best found on this exclusive odyssey to the windswept paradise of Greece s ancient islands and choras, and Turkey s fabled Aegean coast. All accommodations, all meals and featured CULTURAL AND EDUCATIONAL ENRICHMENTS are included and are only available in this exclusively arranged offering. The deluxe, 120-cabin, privately chartered M.S. LE BOREAL, to be launched in 2010, is the state-of-the-art small ship, which enables us to cruise into the heart of the Aegean s treasures and bring Greek and Turkish culture to you. Its intimate capacity and spacious public areas and staterooms (most with balconies) are ideal for our home at sea and feature fine dining and world-class service and shipboard amenities. And, you will unpack only once! CULTURAL AND EDUCATIONAL ENRICHMENT are key components of ISLAND LIFE IN ANCIENT GREECE and offer you a travel experience like no other: Hear it from the Experts! Prominent Faculty will exclusively accompany us and address a variety of Greek and Turkish political, economic, religious and cultural topics throughout our odyssey. Learn key phrases and words that will enable a more lively and personal interaction with local Greeks during It s all Greek to Me! the specially arranged introduction to the Greek language. Meet the locals during the exclusive VILLAGE FORUM, as Patmians, residents of Pátmos, share their candid and fascinating perspectives on today s life in the Aegean Islands. Experience up-close the magical and mystical presence of Greek Mythology and discover firsthand how its cultural, historical and literary influences shape this fabled land and the world. Sample authentic Greek mezedes and Turkish delights during exclusive, specially designed culinary presentations by the ship s Chef de Cuisine and savor the daily menu selections featuring local specialties. Set your own pace in each port by choosing from the attractively priced shore excursions. Enjoy time on your own weave through colorful bazaars in Kuşadasi, explore the narrow streets of Santorini s charming Fira and don t miss the sun setting over the Aegean while sipping ouzo at a harbor-side cafe in Mykonos Little Venice. Experience the timeless traditions and scenery of the Greek Isles in Mykonos. Inset above: The incomparable Parthenon on Athens Acropolis.

LE BOREAL/ Return to the U.S. ATHENS, GREECE Birthplace of the democratic ideal and home to many of history s greatest philosophers and poets from Socrates to Herodotus, Athens is unmatched in its contributions to early Western civilization. Today, the city s ancient greatness is encapsulated in the spectacular Acropolis, the political and spiritual center, and the gracefully proportioned Parthenon, a perfectly executed work of Doric architecture dedicated to the goddess Athena in 438 B.C. DELOS From the dawn of Greek civilization, Delos held an esteemed position as one of the most sacred islands in the Greek world. The mythical birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, it was as central to Greek spiritual life as Olympia or Delphi. Here, sleek lion statues carved from Náxian marble withstood the blight of wind and sea water for nearly 2,600 years on the magnificent Lion Terrace before they were moved to the Archaeological Museum to prevent further deterioration. The Sanctuary of Apollo is a spectacularly rich archaeological site with remains of three Stand beneath the great marble columns at the Library of Celsus, Ephesus iconic second-century monument. v UNESCO site Cruise Itinerary Air Routing Aegean Sea TURKEY Cappadocia Athens Ephesus Piraeus Mykonos Kusadasi Patmos Delos GREECE Delphi v Santorini v Istanbul Canakkale Troy Rhodes separate temples from the fifth and sixth centuries B.C. Delos awe-inspiring ruins also include an entire district of ancient houses dating from 700 B.C., the ancient Theater built in 300 B.C. and the House of the Dolphins built in the second century B.C. MYKONOS According to ancient legend, this island s craggy hills and clefts were formed from the petrified bodies of giants killed by Hercules. With its iconic windmills, sugar-white cube houses, golden beaches and azure bays, Mykonos epitomizes life in the Greek Isles. SANTORINI (OIA) Sail to Santorini, one of the most spectacular of the Aegean Islands, and into its great harbor, bordered by black sand beaches. A cable car rises above Santorini to the town of Thira, whose stunning white walls stand in stark contrast against the dark volcanic cliffs. The picturesque cliffside village of Oia offers spectacular panoramic views of the island s coastline and the surrounding seas. Far below, in what remains of an extinct volcano s caldera, may be legendary Atlantis, possibly lost during a cataclysmic volcanic eruption in the 16th century B.C. RHODES The island of Rhodes has been one of the most prosperous and strategic strongholds in the eastern Mediterranean since the dawn of time. Rhodes Town is an extraordinarily well-preserved medieval city, built over a great Hellenistic metropolis. A major Christian outpost during the Crusades, it is the site where the Knights of St. John erected the splendid 11th-century Palace of the Grand Masters. Ancient Lindos is a lovely village on the island of Rhodes. Its acropolis, perched nearly 500 feet above the town and topped by a fourth-century B.C. temple to Athena, offers breathtaking views of the entire village. The splendid and graceful Blue Mosque is one of the most beautiful Ottoman monuments in the world. PÁTMOS The small island of Pátmos looms large in the history of Christianity, as does its fortress-like Greek Orthodox Monastery of St. John, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Built in 1088, it is still inhabited by monks who preserve it as a pilgrimage site and place of religious study. St. John the Apostle of Ephesus was known to have been exiled to Pátmos for 18 months and very possibly wrote the Book of Revelation here in A.D. 95. VILLAGE FORUM : Meet residents of Pátmos, who will discuss 21st-century life on an ancient Greek island. EPHESUS, TURKEY (KUŞADASI) The Greco-Roman city of Ephesus is one of the world s most dazzling architectural treasures. The beautifully restored façade of the Library of Celsus is breathtaking, and the Marble Way leads to an impressive 24,000- seat amphitheater where St. Paul addressed his Epistle to the Ephesians. According to legend, St. John the Apostle traveled with Mary to Ephesus, where he wrote his gospel and later died and was buried. Visitors can see the sixth-century ruins of the Basilica of St. John, constructed above his tomb. TROY (ÇANAKKALE) Located on a windswept plain near Çanakkale, Troy was immortalized by Homer in The Iliad, a chronicle of the Trojan War of the 13th century B.C., and inspired the tales of ancient Greek mythology at the core of Western literature. Remnants of the Bronze Age citadel and nine cities built over a span of millennia stand on the very site where Troy fell. ISTANBUL This legendary metropolis, straddling the Bosphorus Strait, is the only city in the world situated on two continents: Europe and Asia. Its unmatched landmarks include the Topkapi Palace, Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque.
