The local host is looking forward to be supported in building a playground. You will work together with people of the community (e.g. parents or the local youth). Your working tasks will be varied. To edify a path to the playground, building up different playground equipment and creating a willow pergola. You will be accommodated in the community center which is situated directly on the working site The community center offers a big hall where you can sleep, a big room and a wellequipped kitchen. It also offers sanitary facilities and a bowling alley which you can use under survey of the local skittles club. Behind the building there is a lot of space to do sports (a soccer ground and a volleyball field) and the working site. Speinshart belongs to the collectivity of Eschenbach and the area is very rural, but you will probably be able to do a trip to Bayreuth (30km) or Nuremberg (90km). Also you will have contact to the Landjugend (the youth of the community) which have a club room in the community center. The place itself is great for hiking; and you should also visit the abbey, which is now an international meeting place ESCHENBACH. Various interesting tasks in water and nature conservation await you this year. While working and also in your free time you can enjoy the beautiful nature in the region, but you will also have the possibility to visit nearby towns in Germany, France and Switzerland. Volunteers will support the local workers in the renaturation and maintenance of local rivers as well as in the removal of invasive plants (which is necessary to protect the local nature). Besides, you will help to take care of the so called Loesshohlwege (loess hollow ways), which are very typical in this region and important habitats for plants and animals. All tasks in this project will have professional instruction. You will be accommodated in the local gym: There is lots of space, a huge kitchen and showers are available. Bahlingen is a small town in the southwest of Germany. It is located next to the Black Forest, at the foot of Kaiserstuhl, a wellknown German mountain range. Bahlingen itself and the surrounding area are famous for its vineyards. Very closeby, the university town Freiburg is worth seeing. Besides, you could visit Strasbourg, the Alsatian capital in France (70km), and Basel, the 3rd biggest city in Switzerland (80km). BAHLINGEN. You will get wet and dirty. The National Nature Park HunsrueckHochwald is the newest German National Park to protect the nature. The park was just founded in 2015. The landscape is dominated by huge forests, steep hills, small brooks and ponds, rocks and marshes. Only small hamlets interrupt the nature, a perfect region for plenty of different species but also for hiking. Within this National Park you will work under the supervision of a Park Ranger to care for special marshes situated on the slopes of the hill. These marshes were drained with ditches in the last century to use it as forests. With different measures to bring back the special character of this place and keep the water in the marshes. Many different species (especially amphibians and special plants) already returned. This workcamp will continue this mission and will take place in cooperation with the National Nature Park HunsrueckHochwald and the Foundation for Nature and Environment RhinelandPalatinate. For more information about the National Park please visit: http://www.nationalparkhunsrueckhochwald.de/en.html The main task will be in the marshes: Under the supervision of a Park Ranger you will realise different measures to keep the water in the marshes and to undo the drainage of the area by blocking or filling ditches or by building small wooden barriers. Some other tasks within the National Nature Reserve will be added to make your tasks more diverse. You will be hiking along the Hunsruecksteig trail, check the marking of the trail, and clean it from trash and broken markings. Attention: The work might be physically hard, you will be hiking on some days and you will get wet and muddy for sure Please bring hiking boots, rubber boots and working clothes. This is a special project for nature lovers and people interested in nature protection work. You will get wet and dirty. You will stay in the village community centre of Deuselbach, a small village with 260 inhabitants in the centre of the Nature Park. The centre offers one huge room for sleeping, a living room with bar and a professional kitchen. Camp beds will be provided. There are several showers and space outside to have a rest, make a barbecue or do some sports. The village is quite isolated without any further infrastructure and surrounded by forest and meadows: The next bigger village called Thalfang is about 6 km far. The workcamp will take places in the western part of RhinelandPalatinate. You will stay close to Thalfang, a village with 1.700 inhabitants offering everything you need (shops, pubs, swimming pool). There are also many tourists in the area as it is well known for hiking all over the year and for skiing in winter. The next bigger city it Trier (50 km), the oldest Germany city with many Roman sights, a huge cathedral and plenty of this to do (vineyard, shopping, clubs). But due to the poor public transport the number of excursions will be very limited. STUTTGART54411. The town s project for the next years is to rebuild some of the houses in Celtic style to show tourists how the Celts may have lived in this area. Last year, a workcamp group and volunteers of the community of Bopfingen already started building the main house of the celtic housing complex. Your task will be to further work on the walls and the floor of the house. The working place is set on the top of the hill Ipf, so you will be working outside with a wonderful view over the region. All the material you work with is natural materials like clay, wood, and stone. The group will be staying at the local sport club s house equipped with all necessary facilities, a big living room and a kitchen which you can use to cook. Please bring your own sleeping bag There are large sports areas and a football pitch outside that you can use in your free time, of course. The house is in a quiet area, but very close to the town s center with several supermarkets closeby. Bopfingen is a small town in southern Germany. It has a beautiful centre with a lot of houses in old German style. What makes Bopfingen special is the mountain next to the town which is called Ipf with its flat plateau on the top. The Ipf has an important historical meaning in this area. In former times the Celts lived there and until today a lot of archaeologists and historians come to explore the region. It is surrounded by beautiful nature where you can go for a walk or hike. Around Bopfingen you will find various museums, the romantic historic city of Noerdlingen, the Ries (a large circular meteor impact crater with a diameter of 24 km), and if you would like to visit a bigger city Ulm is not far away with its famous cathedral and the highest church tower in the world. One of those festivals i called Umsonst and Draussen (free of charge and outdoors) i will take place close to the campus of the University of Stuttgart outside the city centre, running for three days, from 4th i 6th of August (www.udstuttgart.de). It is the biggest noncommercial musicpoliticculture festival in Stuttgart. It is organized by an open plenary where everyone can come and participate. The festival is running in that unique and quite anarchic way for 37 years now Since 2013 the festival has been hosting camps and the international volunteers have become an important part in the festival organisation. The international group will work together with many other local volunteers. The main tasks will be setting up of the stage, stalls and tents on the site of the festival, as well as the disassembly at the end. While the festival is running, the volunteers will assist in different areas: bar, stage, organisation, catering etc. Volunteers should be flexible enough to work long and unusual hours i and enjoy music Speaking or understanding basic German will be a plus The group might be asked to give a short presentation of their workcamp on stage Very basic conditions We ask for a motivation letter to be sent with the application In the first two days, the group will be hosted in a cultural centre in Stuttgart, where you have a kitchen, sanitary facilities and the group will be sleeping in the hall, where the stage is. We advise sightseeing in these first days. On the third day, you will move to the site of the festival. There you will be camping in a big tent. You will need a camping mat and a sleeping bag. We encourage you to bring your own tent, if possible Food will available through the food stands. Sanitary facilities are given, but be aware of very basic festival standards: only cold, outdoor showers available and limited privacy compared to regular accommodations With 600,000 inhabitants, Stuttgart is the statecapital of BadenWurttemberg. From museums, to castles and parks, to an afternoon spent shopping, this city offers something for everyone to see In addition, take a short train ride and enjoy the variety of nature around Stuttgart. Take a visit to some of the other interesting towns in the area, like Tuebingen (approximately 1 hour away) and Ludwigsburg (approximately 30 minutes away). STUTTGART. In the eighties huge protests out of the civil society has been successful and most of the intermediaterange missile, called Pershing II, has been disarmed in Germany. But in our world there are still more than 14.000 nuclear weapons remaining! The organizations "International Fellowship of Reconciliation" and the "Friedenswerkstatt Mutlangen" invites international volunteers to support activities against nuclear weapons. It will start in Stuttgart with actions at EUCOM, the US headquarter for nuclear weapons in Europe. There will be excursions to a former location of nuclear missiles in Mutlangen in the "Swabian Jura" (where the blockades against the missiles has been successful!) and to the military airbase Buechel in the "Eifel". There are several joint actions planned such as street theater, protests and the start of the international art exhibition 50 cities 50 traces against traceless oblivion. The Art Project: The Artist Klaudia Dietewich seeks out and photographs vestiges found "along the way". Although abstract, they evoke memories and waken associations. As a "precipitate of life" they ask us: what remains of us and the world as we know it? Her "Wegstücke" / "Along the Way" series is a call to respect and preserve the world and its legacies as repositories of memory. These artworks are warnings against the destruction of our cities, against nuclear weapons, which is the central idea behind the Mayors for Peace movement. 50 photographs, found in cities, where "Mayors for Peace" govern, will be the central part of an international travelling exhibition. During the workcamp, volunteers will participate at the kickoff presentation in Stuttgart. In 2018 this exhibition will be shown in international cities and at the United Nations (UNO). During the workcamp political actions connecting the art project with the campaign for nuclear disarmament will be developed and performed. For further information please visit: http://www.50cities50traces.org/indexd.html http://www.mayorsforpeace.org/ The political campaign: Mayors for Peace is promoting a ban of all nuclear Weapons in cooperation with many organizations of the peace movement. In Germany nuclear weapons are still stationed. Twenty of them are still kept in the airbase Büchel. They belong to the US Army and in case of war they would be flown by German pilots. Instead of abolished, as the international law demands, these weapons are going to be upgraded. The campaign Büchel is everywhere Global Zero Now demands the stop of the so called modernization of the bombs, the removal from Germany and a legal ban all nuclear weapons. Volunteers are invited to support the installation of the exhibition in Stuttgart, they can develop their own art campaign and perform street theatre. Workcamp will start in Stuttgart with actions at EUCOM, the US headquarter for nuclear weapons in Europe. Its rich history of over thousand years, makes it easy to call it one of the cradles of Saxony. The continuous rule of the WettinsDynasty beginning with the Earl of Ilburg in the 11th century was carried on until 1918. Part of their territory is the state of Saxony today. In medieval times and during industrialization Eilenburg was a rich city. At the time of Martin Luther its main business was brewery and in the 19th century it was a national center of textile industries. But Eilenburg also was devastated several times in its history, in April 1945, Eilenburg was almost completely destroyed. As the only evidence of former rich times remained the "Sorbenturm" as a remaining part of the Ilburg. It was assumedly built in the 12th century at the highest part of the 220m x 150m plateau. A loop footpath outside the castle wall connects the "Sorbenturm" with the "Amtshaus"(deanery), the former county court. This path has been renewed with the help of the volunteers in the last workcamps. The leisure time program will be organized together with the local Eilenburg youth groups and clubs. The focus lies here on the encounter and the exchange with local adolescents. Also there are sports activities such as soccer, volleyball, swimming and bowling. In addition there will be a cultural program. A trip to Leipzig and Dresden is scheduled. You can get to know the rich history of Eilenburg through guided tours in the museum and in the cellars, located in the hill in the center of the city. The volunteers will live in the local youth center called "House IV". The group can cook for itself in a modern kitchen. Eilenburg. Project: Commemorating as a way towards peace The Evangelical parish of Datteln is where the Christian voluntary service, nowadays known as yapcfd, was founded. The Parish of Datteln aims to remember a historical encounter, which took place after WW I during the French occupation of the Ruhr area. It happened on the Good Friday in 1923 in Lutherhaus (former parish center): the French lieutenant Etienne Bach and the German official Karl Wille found the strength for reconciliation. Following their example, representatives of many nations, which could see each other only as enemies for generations, found a good way to communicate. The root of the movement "Young activists for Peace" lay in this international encounter around 90 years ago. Lots of volunteers have learned that reconciliation is possible, even if contradictions seem to be unbridgeable. Work: In the last workcamps with the help of the local artist Ms. Ulrike Speckmann, volunteers created colorful messages of Peace to be shown in public places: They designed "benches of encounter" and a big mural in the local kindergarden. Two years ago, volunteers designed a big picture for the entrance hall of the local church. It was done as reflection of a memorial in the same room, which still shows a very militaristic and nationalistic approach. This year volunteers are invited to design benches for this room, in order to bring in the perspective of peace and reconciliation. Again the artist will help us to get a creative process of painting. For information about the artist please visit http://ulrikespeckmann.de/. In addition to this artistic activities it is foreseen to visit the local kindergarden, to play with the children and to do some gardening there. Members of the parish will be happy if volunteers are ready to contact the different social groups of the city, especially the children and the older generation. Study part: How to tackle the subject peace artistically, local history as starting point of an international movement. Volunteers with interest in creative arts are very welcome. After confirmation, you will have to sign a selfcommitment statement in terms of legal protection for children and young persons. Please bring a sleeping bag. Region: The town Datteln is part of the mining region in the north of the Ruhr area with approx. 35 000 inhabitants in the federal state NordrheinWestfalen. Four waterways for shipping traffic are crossing in Datteln. The river Lippe and the region Münsterland are nearby. Next bigger towns are Recklinghausen, Dortmund and the very nice and famous students town Münster. The participants will be accommodated in the modern community center of Datteln "EtienneBachHaus". Project: Germany s largest openair museum features peasant buildings and rural culture from between the middle of the 16th to the middle of the 20th centuries. It includes both farms scattered in the countryside and one complete village, with all buildings original and reconstructed or transported from an area of 6,5 Th. squarekilometres. Historically cultivated gardens, traditional crafts and handicrafts and breedingprograms for endangered regional species (among them horses and pigs) are important aspects of the museum s work. Approximately 200.000 people visit the museum annually; in summer, the museum can have up to 2000 visitors daily. The museum is located very close to Detmold, an important centre of performing arts (i.e. Detmold Conservatory, Opera) and a popular destination for tourism, including sites such as the Hermannsdenkmal and the Externsteine situated in the Teutoburg Forest. The museum is very interested in promoting international exchange between the volunteers, staff and visitors. Given the unique opportunity to stay at the museum, participants should be profoundly interested in learning about rural culture and the history of the various buildings. More information about the Openair Museum Detmold can be found at http://www.lwl.org/lwl/kultur/lwlfreilichtmuseum Detmold/museum/?lang=en Volunteers will be working in small groups in forestation, harvesting, or the maintenance of the museum grounds. No special knowledge required; volunteers will be directed by trained staff. Work will be confined to the morning and volunteers will have the rest of the day for other activities. However, some work may exceed this target and require a full work day (i.e. harvest). In this case the next day may be taken off. Matching with this year s exhibition theme of the museum Childhood volunteers should organise a small program about popular outside games played (countingout rhymes, etc.) by the children in the countries they come from; this should occupy approximately 1520% of their total work time at the camp. The program will be presented on August 12 at the museum. Study & Leisure time: A small program with guided visits to parts of the museums is organised for the volunteers. The leaders of the camp will introduce the participants to sites of nature, culture and relaxation in the city of Detmold and beyond. At least one long hike to important sites is planned for the weekend. Volunteers are asked to introduce their countries to the other participants by bringing photographs, maps, handicrafts, music, etc. Can you teach a song in your language? After registration, we require a selfdeclaration concerning the children and youth protection. A motivation letter is needed. The Asylum Centre for asylum seekers in Hessen is located at the edge of the city Giessen. There are currently about 2 000 asylumseekers in Giessen who are in Germany because of various reasons, e.g. political, ethnic, religious, persecution or poverty. Usually they stay at the facility for few months until a decision has been made about their application. Sometimes they are sent to other centers or to other safe countries where they entered the European Union, or to their countries of origin. Most of the people living in the Asylum Centre in Giessen are from Turkey, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Eritrea and Balkan countries: Young men, women, children and older people. The asylum seekers live in simple conditions and are not allowed to work or leave the district in which they live. Their permission to stay in Germany often is limited and so is their contact with the locals living in the city. The international volunteers are invited to the Asylum Centre for two weeks to take part in the daily life of the refugees. In the study part of the camp, we want to discuss the situation of refugees in Germany and Europe, as well as the current developments in the area of Asylumpolicies. We want you to get in contact with the residents of the Asylum Centre so that we can learn about their stories, difficulties and perspectives. Together with the refugees we want to organize common activities, where the women and children are taken into consideration. In addition, our goal is to get in contact with the young members of the local protestant church to raise greater awareness for the refugees and to break the isolation of the refugees. We will prepare contact with students of the university that are willing to take care of the medical issues of the refugees and to pursue the legal issues of the asylum law. We will also get in contact with students of the University who medicate people without legal status. We especially invite volunteers to participate, who are able to speak Turkish, Arabic or Farsi. Besides organizing common activities with the refugees, we plan to construct some furniture made from old palettes together. They can be used outside, and will be nucleus of a meeting point of the inhabitants of the center. Please bring sleeping bag, camping mat, work clothes, bathing suit, music, your talents and something specific from your country. After registration, we require a selfdeclaration concerning the children and youth protection. A motivation letter is needed. COMPLEMENTARY ACTIVITIES LEISURE ACTIVITIES: Environment: Giessen, a city populated mostly by students located in the midwest of Germany. It is easy to reach via Frankfurt airport and Frankfurt Hahn. Leisure Time: There are plenty of possibilities for leisure time activities: playing football or canoeing as well as possibilities to visit some other cities. (e.g. Marburg, Frankfurt or Heidelberg). The workcamp will be hosted by a local protestant church which is already involved in working with the refugees. The premises of the church are plentiful and volunteers will have a lot of space for sleeping, cooking, dining, relaxing, and for indoor and outdoor activities. Giessen.
