What s happening in your Chapter: Riding weather has been a little sporadic lately, but it appears good weather is about here to stay. Many have braved the unusual weather to get in that occasional ride between the rain drops, but now even the most timid can pull up the kickstand and head out on the open road. Dicky McClard and Mike Starkey have planned lots of rides for us to enjoy and we can t wait to join the fun. Chapter I has always been known as a riding group and with all the rides scheduled, I m sure the riders will enjoy this year. Thursday Ride-to-Eats are also getting into full swing now that the weather is allowing us to ride in something other than our car. Thanks to each of those who choose were we eat for the month. For the month of May, Gary Hardison has chosen The Hickory House in Jackson on the 10th and Jay s BBQ in Marble Hill on the 24th. Some other great activities and rides are planned for this month. They include The Crawfish Run, Mingo Swamp Ride, Giant City Ride, Niehaus Days, Sirro s Pizza Ride, I-55 Coffee Break, Tower Rock Ride and the Missouri District Rally. I m sure there will even be a few impromptu rides thrown in for good measure. So look for a very busy and FUN month of May for Chapter I. A quick word about the I-55 Coffee Break Thank you, Glen Dirnberger for heading up this worthwhile Chapter I MAP event. It is always a great time and an excellent opportunity to show off our beautiful bikes to the public, while at the same time letting motorists know we share the road with them! Ride Safe Bruce Chapter I Director A bit of history. As we celebrate our Chapter 23 year we would like to think Donna and Dennis Albee for starting off the next 23 years with a fantastic party at Dexter BBQ in Cape. A chance to relive the past and look forward to the future was enjoyed by all those who attended. Jan Bacon and I were unable to attend due to another event we had planned long ago, but we would like to share a bit of Chapter I history. Attached is a copy of the Charter for our Chapter dated April 15, 1995. It was signed by our first Director Stanley Lurk and GWRRA Executive Director Edward Price.

Open Chapter Position Treasurer With Bruce stepping back into the position of Chapter Director, a new Chapter Treasurer will need to be appointed as GWRRA s policy precludes the Chapter Director and Chapter Treasurer from living in the same household. The Chapter Treasurer is an important, but not a time intensive position. If you feel you would be interested and have time for the following, please talk with Bruce regarding the position. Basic knowledge of Excel or a willingness to learn; Active in the Chapter attending most Socials and participating in other Chapter events; Ability to make monthly deposits in the Chapter bank account; Have expense reimbursement forms approved by Chapter Director prior to issuing checks; Forward a copy of the Chapter s financial spreadsheet to the Chapter Director a week prior to each monthly Social; and Complete the Year End Financials by the due date as noted by GWRRA National I am happy to assist in the transition and answer any questions you might have now about the position, or should you be appointed and have questions down the road. Jan Bacon Chapter I Treasurer WOOHOO!!! FUN! FUN!! FUN!!! This year the Fun Committee will be selling chances on a gift basket - a different theme each month. The money raised will go into General Fund and part of it to the Christmas Food Baskets. This will be done at the first Thursday social gathering. Karen B Karen H

Motorcycle Awareness Coordinator by Marlene Cloude The month of May is Motorcycle Awareness month all across the nation. Yet, accidents involving motorcycles continue to happen at an alarming rate. We know the most common causes of motorcycle accidents related to other vehicles: A car pulls out or turns in front of a motorcycle. A car changes lanes on the highway running into a motorcycle. A car runs into a motorcycle stopped at an intersection. The motorcycle awareness we need is to deal with these situations as riders, as effectively as possible, is squarely on our shoulders as responsible riders. This is what happens expect it and assume it will every time. Ride as if that car IS going to pull out or turn in front of you. Be prepared to react to it. Every car, every time. Constantly be aware of your position to surrounding traffic on the road and don t ride in blind spots. Don t assume that car next to you sees you if the driver needs to swerve, I ll bet he d rather hit you than a truck. Move out of the situation. When vehicles crowd in on you, get out of the situation as soon as possible. Position yourself to be visible when stopped. Don t sit right behind a car. Move out to create a silhouette that stands out from behind. Keep the bike in gear and have an escape route ready in case you see that car running up on you too fast. We have a key MAP event coming up this month, thanks to Glen Dirnberger stepping up to continue the long standing I-55 Coffee break coming up at the end of this month. This is one of our best opportunities to help the motoring public see us, hear us and become aware. Please take an hour or so of your day to help with this event. If you want to be safe, take safety into your own hands. ALWAYS pretend you re invisible, and ride defensively. We try to educate with motorcycle awareness activities, but Ultimately, it s your responsibility to ARRIVE ALIVE. Marlene Cloude, Chapter I M.A.P. Marlene Cloude MAP Director
