Amtrak California Travel Made Simple On the Pacific Surfliner New windows are being installed (to allow for even greater views) New equipment is being added to help alleviate overcrowding Your Ride s Here! If this is your first time riding an Amtrak California train, welcome! For those who ve taken the train before, welcome back! This is an exciting time for Amtrak California. Ridership on California s three state-supported intercity routes is up more than nine percent over last year. Everyone is feeling the pinch of high gas prices and looking for alternatives to driving and with Amtrak California s San Joaquin, Pacific Surfliner and Capitol Corridor trains, complemented by an extensive Thruway bus system, you can travel to more than 175 destinations throughout California, Southern Oregon and Nevada. With the increased interest in train travel, we realize there is a need for more trains, even more convenient bus connections and improved overall services. The California Department of Transportation along with the Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority and Amtrak are dedicated to meeting these needs. Here are just a few of the new features being implemented with this schedule change: On the San Joaquin Additional bike racks are being installed Additional capacity will be created (more cars being added on weekends) Improved baggage service is being provided En Route restroom cleaning is being initiated New bus connections are being added from the South Bay and West Los Angeles connecting passengers with Pacific Surfliner and Metrolink trains in Van Nuys and San Joaquin trains in Bakersfield On the Capitol Corridor New Quiet Cars are being introduced When we released the Spring/Summer 2008 Timetable with its new format in May of this year, we asked for your comments and feedback. We appreciate your suggestions and have incorporated a number of updates in the Fall 2008/Winter 2009 Timetable. The most significant change is the inclusion of the Capitol Corridor train schedule. This all-in-one travel planning tool now provides complete train schedules for all three state-supported routes, complete bus schedules, a comprehensive system map and additional passenger information that will help you when planning your travel. If you have any suggestions on how we can improve this timetable, please drop us a line at: railmarketing@dot.ca.gov or write us at: Caltrans, Division of Rail, Marketing Branch, P.O. Box 942874, MS 74, Sacramento, CA 94274-0001. We know you have choices when making travel decisions. We hope you ll think of Amtrak California as your other car. It s affordable, relaxing and fun! Enjoy your trip your ride s here! Will Kempton Director, California Department of Transportation 1-800-USA-RAIL (1-800-872-7245) Fall 2008 / Winter 2009 1

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) partners with Amtrak to provide service on three intercity rail corridors in California, which carries more than four million passengers annually. This partnership is known as Amtrak California. Caltrans supports train service between the Bay Area and Auburn on the Capitol Corridor, between Oakland, Sacramento and Bakersfield on the San Joaquin, and between San Luis Obispo and San Diego on the Pacific Surfliner. In addition, Amtrak Thruway Motorcoach service provides guaranteed bus connections to many other destinations throughout California, Southern Oregon and Nevada. The San Joaquin The San Joaquin offers six daily trains between Bakersfield and Stockton. Four trains continue to Oakland with connecting Thruway bus service to San Francisco. Two trains provide service from Stockton to Sacramento with several Thruway bus connections offering even more travel options. Thruway bus service is also available between Los Angeles and Bakersfield connecting passengers to San Joaquin trains traveling north, and Pacific Surfliner trains traveling south. The Pacific Surfliner The Pacific Surfliner offers 11 trains between San Diego and Los Angeles. Five trains continue north to Santa Barbara, and two trains provide service to San Luis Obispo. Amtrak Thruway bus service provides passengers even more options with extended service between San Diego and San Luis Obispo as well as other bus routes along the Pacific Surfliner corridor. The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) in partnership with Amtrak manages the San Joaquin and Pacific Surfliner routes. Reservations are handled through the Amtrak Support Desk at 1-800-USA-RAIL (1-800-872-7245). For more information visit amtrakcalifornia.com The Capitol Corridor The Capitol Corridor offers 16 weekday and 11 weekend trains between Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay Area. The Capitol Corridor is an intercity passenger rail system that provides a convenient alternative to traveling along Northern California s congested I-80, I-680 and I-880 freeways. This fast, reliable and affordable 170-mile rail corridor serves 17 stations in eight counties including Placer, Sacramento, Yolo, Solano, Contra Costa, Alameda, San Francisco, and Santa Clara. The Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority (CCJPA) is a partnership among six local transit agencies in the service area, which share in the administration and management of the Capitol Corridor. For fares and reservations visit capitolcorridor.org or call 1-877-9-RIDECC (1-877-974-3322). Amtrak Thruway Motorcoach Service An extensive, dedicated Amtrak Thruway Motorcoach network provides bus connections to destinations beyond Amtrak California s train stations. Together, they serve more than 175 destinations throughout California, Southern Oregon and Nevada. See the Amtrak California System Map on page 20 for more information. 2 Fall 2008 / Winter 2009 amtrakcalifornia.com
