Citizens in Action is a non-profit, non-governmental, voluntary youth organisation based in Athens. The aims of C.i.A are: To support and promote the idea of active citizenship to the young people, through new forms of social commitment and participation, for a democratic and open society. To encourage the mobility of people and ideas through international exchanges, with the aim of the enhancement of knowledge, mutual understanding and peace. To contribute to community and local development through the participation of local and foreign volunteers in projects of benefit to all, with an emphasis on rural areas. To promote people's participation to defend and define their quality of life, aiming at the protection of the human dignity and the environment. To achieve its aims, C.i.A invites its members to practical action, with emphasis on youth voluntary work, youth mobility and communication, international exchanges and non-formal education. Volunteer projects Activities Workcamps Workcamps are a very efficient pedagogical tool. C.i.A is organising workcamps in different parts of Greece, with the participation of young people from Greece and abroad. The aim of this activity is to promote the idea of voluntary work for supporting local development and cover needs related to the protection of the environment and cultural heritage. For the realisation of these projects C.i.A is closely co-operating with local authorities and local youth groups. European Voluntary Service C.i.A is also involved in the European Voluntary Service (E.V.S.) programme, both as sending and hosting organisation. Local groups Support of local groups, active in different areas according to local realities (e.g. environmental protection, youth expression, youth mobility, training etc). Training of young people in project planning and management; counselling of the group, till they become independent actors in local social life. Networking of the different local groups on a national and international level. Promoting the dissemination of information. Networks Exchange of experiences and good practices. Platforms for open dialogue and exchange of information. Meetings (national and international) seminars, symposia and campaigns on different themes, such us democracy and youth participation, human rights, peace, quality of life etc. Training - education Seminars and workshops, in a theoretical and experiential way, on two main areas: Intercultural learning Active citizenship Volunteerism
Citizens in Action Workcamps Volunteers are working 30 hours per week (Monday to Saturday). The language spoken in our workcamps is English Every day life: the group organises home duty teams, so that everybody can participate in the cleaning, tidying up and preparation of the meals. Leader team: Camp leaders are volunteers too. They are not there to manage everything alone but to advice volunteers and suggest various activities. They are a link between the different actors of the workcamp: the organising association, the project sponsor, the local community and the volunteers. Age Limit: 18 years old minimum no maximum Insurance: Volunteers are insured against accident, only within the specific dates of each project. First aid is provided on site. Our insurance does not cover lost or stolen objects, or illness (except those due to accident). Volunteers from the EU countries must bring the E111 form (medical, pharmaceutical and hospitalisation cover). Volunteers cover free time activities costs on their own. In all Camps volunteers should bring: sleeping bag, working clothes, walking shoes, and a torch. Extra fee: In order to provide quality health insurance we are forced to charge an extra fee of 20. The crisis in Greece has affected heavily the public health system. We would really appreciate if you could inform your volunteers for this fee which should be paid upon arrival at the workcamps. C.i.A 01 Kompitsi Corfu 02/08-17/08 Reno/Kids 18+ 15 Vols LOCATION: Kompitsi is a small village in the Southwest part of Corfu. It s about 6 km away from the capital Corfu (Kerkira in Greek). The village itself is very beautiful surrounded by a chestnut forest and built with traditional Ionian architectural style. The seaside is also easy to be reached by very frequent bus connection. WORK: The work of the programme is comprised by two parts: Part A: Volunteers will mainly do manual work at the preparation and construction of a scout s summer campsite for children and teenagers in the nearest pinewood forest of the area. The local municipality will have made some basic first accommodation structure and the volunteers will help to its further construction. The local population and especially young people of the area will be involved in the activities as well. Aim is to interact and learn from each other. The volunteers are expected to set an example for the young people of the area so as to become more motivated for their local community. Volunteers have to keep in mind that sometimes it is going to be tiring and under the sun (please do not forget sun protection) but also very rewarding in the result. Part B: Volunteers will organise during some afternoons of the week free time activities for the children of the village. Most of the activities will be organised on the spot according to the needs of the kids and the experience of the volunteers. To give you some ideas, volunteers will organise: theatrical plays, construction of ecological toys, English (other languages) lessons etc. Volunteers will work 6 hours per day, 6 days per week. C.i.A. is not responsible for any changes in the work. ACCOMMODATION: Volunteers will be hosted in a community building. Accommodation will be basic. Participants will prepare meals themselves, in shifts. FREE TIME: Visits and excursions to the most important sites of the island, including an excursion to the town of Corfu. Volunteers will also have the opportunity to see and participate in some of the cultural events organised in different parts of the island. Camp-leaders will organise free time activities in co-operation with the volunteers and the local partner. C.i.A does not cover free time activities expenses TERMINAL: Corfu airport, Corfu Port. C.i.A 02 Pentalofo Kozani 02/08-19/08 Envi/Reno 18+ 15 Vols LOCATION: Situated in one of the most beautiful mountainous areas of Greece, at 1050m height, Pentalofo is a small village, 86 Km away from Kozani town in the North East of Greece. The area has a great tradition in stone masonry and a great architectural heritage. It is the 7 th year that community of Pentalofo hosts international volunteers. WORK: Volunteers will help at the renovation of old and the construction of new stone paths. Volunteers will also help in the practical preparation of local festivals with traditional music and they will organise some activities in order to present the intercultural dimension and volunteer spirit and some activities for children. The local partner hosting the project-voio Municipality-
decides on the priorities and the co-ordination of the work. Volunteers will work 6 hours per day, 6 days per week. C.i.A. is not responsible for any changes in the work. ACCOMMODATION: Volunteers will be hosted at a youth centre. Toilets, showers and cooking facilities are provided. Participants will prepare meals themselves, in shifts. FREE TIME: Volunteers will have the chance to visit some of the most important monuments, such as churches, monasteries and traditional houses. Rivers, lakes, forests with rare species of animals (e.g. bears) and plants are forming a spectacular environment. Volunteers will also have the opportunity to see some of the cultural events organised in different parts of the area. Campleaders will organise free time activities in co-operation with the volunteers and the local partner. Please mention that the area is isolated so it is not possible to visit other cities, or the seaside!! C.i.A does not cover free time activities expenses. C.i.A 03 Siatista Kozani 06/08-22/08 Reno 18+ 15 Vols LOCATION: Situated in one of the most beautiful mountainous areas of Greece, at 920 m height, Siatista is a small town of 6.000 inhabitants and is the administrative centre of the Municipality of Voio, 28 Km away from Kozani town in the North East of Greece. The town has been a very important economical center during the 17 th 18 th century and this is visible in its very rich architectural tradition. From this past only 30 traditional houses existing today and the Municipality decided to start renovating the most important of them. This will be the first year that we will organise an international workcamp. WORK: Volunteers will help at the renovation of one of the traditional houses, cleaning the surrounding area and preparing the space for the specialised workers. Volunteers will also organise some activities in order to present to local youth the intercultural dimension and volunteer spirit. The local partner hosting the project-voio Municipality- decides on the priorities and the co-ordination of the work. Volunteers will work 6 hours per day, 6 days per week. C.i.A 04 Akrotiri Santorini Island 06/09-21/09 Reno/Envi 18+ 15 Vols LOCATION: Akrotiri village is located 15 Km away from Fira city in Santorini island. The first habitation at the site dates from the Late Neolithic times (at least the 4th millenium B.C.) and it has been famous worldwide for its archaeological site, the most important prehistoric settlements of the Aegean (20th-17th centuries B.C.). WORK: Volunteers will help at the renovation of a path leading from the village to Balos, a beach in caldera. Volunteers have to keep in mind that it is a hard manual work, under the sun and the wind. This path will be part of a network of paths across Santorini Island. They will also help cleaning some areas in the archaeological site of Akrotiri. Finally, they will also organize intercultural and environmental awareness raising activities for the local people, especially the youngsters. The local partner hosting the project, Municipality of Thira, decides on the priorities and the coordination of the work. Volunteers will work 6 hours per day, 6 days per week. C.i.A. is not responsible for any changes in the work. ACCOMMODATION: Volunteers will be hosted at Akrotiri excavation dormitories. Toilets, showers and cooking facilities are provided. For security reasons, alcohol is not allowed in the excavation site. Participants will prepare meals themselves, in shifts. FREE TIME: Volunteers will have the chance to visit some of the most important sites of Santorini Island. Camp-leaders will organise free time activities in co-operation with the volunteers and the local partner. C.i.A does not cover free time activities expenses.
