Camp ROCK June 8-11, 2019 August 2-5, 2019 Summer is almost here and that means Camp ROCK is right around the corner! Planning is well underway and everyone involved is excited ~ this is sure to be the best camp yet! We wanted to give you (and your parents - so make sure they read this) an update of what s going on and a list of what to pack. So here it is THE BASICS Joyful Hope Presentations and adults from, Corpus Christi (Carol Stream), Annunciation (Aurora), St. John the Baptist (Joliet), St. Daniel the Prophet (Wheaton), St. Peter s (Aurora) and other parishes are co-sponsoring, planning and holding the camp. Dickson Valley Camp and Retreat Center provides the meals, lodging, recreational facilities and equipment. The parish Youth Ministers are in charge of the program and content of the camp. In addition to the enthusiastic Youth Ministers and volunteer adults involved with camp, there will be a squad of High School students serving as counselors. We had more counselors apply this year than ever before. This is a wonderful reflection of how enjoyable and inspiring this camp can be the counselors want to come back and contribute!!! WHAT ARE WE GONNA DO? Recreational activities will include the following and more: Swimming, Canoeing on the Fox River, Bonfire, Archery, Team Sports, Crafts, Hiking, Indoor Gym with a Climbing Wall, Wacky Olympics, a Talent Show, Quad-Copter Flight School and more! The camp will have a spiritual focus as well as recreational. We are working with the theme Dare to Dream The campers will be challenged to about all of the ways they can become Christ in the world and that all of the graces need to live out our dreams are available to us as Catholics through the Sacraments, Scripture, Prayer, and Mass. In addition to various learning opportunities, there will be prayer times - personal and small group, age-appropriate Bible study, and singing. We will have Mass and the opportunity to receive the sacrament of Reconciliation.
MEDICAL INFORMATION We are very fortunate to have volunteers who take turns to be present for the entire camp. Please pay careful attention to the guidelines listed below regarding the proper handling of medications at camp. All medications, including over-the-counter, are to be turned in to the volunteer camp at check-in time. Medication should be in its original container and clearly marked with the young person s name. Please put the containers in a clear zip-lock bag along with dosage amounts and times. Please send anything your child will need, including: aspirin, Tylenol, Benadryl, etc. The volunteer camp nurse will be responsible for distributing medications during camp. Medication Form (included with this bulletin): All campers must turn in this form regardless of whether or not your child will be needing any medications. If your child will not be taking any medications simply mark None or OK to take Tylenol, Advil, Benadryl etc. at the bottom and sign it. Any student needing to use prescription medications during the course of camp must have this Camp ROCK Student Medication Form filled-out and signed by their physician. Please send written instructions with all over-the-counter medications as well. Any updated Student Medication Form should be returned as soon as possible but no later than May 15th. IN CASE OF MEDICAL EMERGENCY If your son or daughter needs medical care beyond basic first aide, then they will be transported to a local hospital in Sandwich, IL (approx. 20 minutes from camp). Every attempt will be made to contact and communicate with the Parent/Legal Guardian listed on the Parental Consent and Medical Release form. TRANSPORTATION A map is included, please make sure your camper is at camp by 9:00am on Saturday June 8th (no earlier) and you pick them up at 4pm on Tuesday June 11th or 9:00am on Thursday August 1st (no earlier) and pick them up at 4pm on Sunday August 4th. VOLUNTEERS (See dates for Protecting God s Children in your parish bulletin!) Adults are needed to help out in a variety of roles during this camp. PLEASE volunteer online via our web site at www.camprock.me If you haven t volunteered, then please consider doing so. Due to the home-spun nature of the camp, and the moderately low fee, we are very dependent on help from parents and other interested adults. It is our hope that at least one parent of a camper help out with one (or more) volunteer roles in the camp. Parents who come to help out are usually amazed at the wide-range of activities that go on at camp and are grateful to share in the camp experience with their son or daughter. PLEASE NOTE: We are especially in need of overnight volunteers! www.camprock.me - more information page.
WHAT TO BRING NECESSITIES: Bible, Swimsuit, Jeans, Sweatshirt or Jacket, T-shirts, Shorts, Socks, Underwear, Tennis Shoes & Sandals, Beach Towel, Shower Towel, Sleeping Bag & Pillow, Pajamas, Toiletries, Sunscreen, Bug Spray, Flashlight & Extra Batteries. Please remember that this is camp. Many of our activities are outdoors and it is pretty much guaranteed that you will get dirty. So, don t bring your best outfits (you do not need dress clothes for Mass). Also, it is recommended that you bring a pair of tennis shoes that you don t mind getting wet and dirty. Additionally, flip-flops or water shoes are very useful for canoeing and swimming. OPTIONAL ITEMS: Disposable Camera (labeled with your name), Spending Money (if desired) for vending machines and camp store, and Sunglasses. If you are going to bring money it is recommended that campers only bring $5 - $10 worth of coins to be used in camp vending machines and the lake-side candy store. All other valuables should be left at home. A large re-usable water bottle is provided for each camper. There is bottled water available in each of the lodges for campers to re-fill their water bottles and stay well-hydrated. The sleeping lodges are air conditioned, as is the main-meeting room. WHAT NOT TO BRING: Do not bring: Cell phones, ipods, radios, CD players, walkie talkies, electronic games or gadgets, expensive clothing or jewelry, pocket knives, energy drinks, drugs or alcohol. If any of the above items are found with campers they will be confiscated. DRESS CODE: This is a spiritual camp, not a summer vacation, and all participants are expected to dress in a modest and appropriate manner. In the event one s attire is deemed inappropriate for camp the student may be asked to change. Short shorts, low cut tops, bikini tops, spaghetti straps, and tops and baby-t s or belly shirts showing one s midriff are not an acceptable form of dress for this camp. Clothing should cover all undergarments. Guys are expected to wear their shirts at all times, unless swimming or canoeing. No offensive language or symbols on clothing is to be worn. Sleepwear should also be modest in nature. If a Camp Leader judges someone s swimsuit to be immodest, the student will be told to wear a t-shirt over it (no appeal process). Cool Prizes Awarded! DRESS-UP DAYS (During Camp): There is a theme for every day of camp. Campers and counselors are encouraged to get in the spirit of camp and dress according to the theme each day. To help you pack, here s the list of themes: First day- Goofy Hat Day (Wear your goofy hat on the bus!) Second day - Clash Day ( Hey, did you know your socks don t match? ) Third day - Patriotic Day Red, White, Blue (no flags) Last day - Camp T-shirt Day (Provided at camp.) A NOTE ABOUT PACKING: Most people over-pack. Please only bring what you need. Everything you bring to camp should fit inside one medium size duffel bag. Pillow and sleeping bag may be packed separately. REMEMBER: the less you bring, the less you have to carry and the less you might lose.
Camp Rules The campers will be oriented to the Camp Rules on the first morning of the camp. Your child needs to abide by the rules. In registering your child for this camp, you - the parent or legal guardian of a camper - agree to be responsible for your child's actions and to provide transportation home (at any time) from this event should the need arise. Also, no child is to leave camp for any reason other than an emergency. Failure to abide by this rule will jeopardize your ability to participate in camp next year. CAMP PHONE NUMBERS If you need to contact one of the Youth Ministers running the camp or your son/daughter, then please call either (630) 553-6233 or (815) 786-8238. Both numbers will get you through to Dickson Valley Camp Staff who will relay messages. As a back-up to the camp emergency number John s cell phone #630-846-0688,. Please be aware that because we are in the middle of nowhere cell phone signals often go in and out and your call may not be answered or returned right away. Every effort will be made to follow up with phone calls in a timely manner. The public phones at Dickson Valley Camp will only operate with a phone card or by making a collect call. Keep this in mind if you think your son or daughter may want to call home. However, camp is busy and there are very few opportunities for students to call home (mostly at night). Campers will often remember the next day that mom or dad asked them to call home the previous evening. If you don t hear from your child assume that they were having so much fun they simply forgot to call. DO NOT SEND CELL PHONES TO CAMP WITH YOUR CHILD. Again, cell phone signals are very sporadic (some phones don t work at all) and the potential for loss or damage is extremely high. If you have other questions, please feel free to contact any of the Youth Ministers/Camp Directors listed below: John Lamperis, cell 630-846-0688
