Great Planes EAA Chapter 1134 Dinner was good and the company was great. The last meeting of the year was the annual Christmas Party, held this year at Eazy Street Restaurant. The popular item this year during the gift exchange was a set of custom engraved glasses. The glasses, pictured below, had our EAA Chapter number along with the EAA logo on them. I lost count, but after many steals the must have glasses went home with Weldon. Congrats! There were many other great gifts: Remote control helicopter, Jenny stamp collector display, cup holders and more. Date: Where: Hosted by: Time: Bring: December 2013 EAA Chapter 1134 Meeting January 2014 Meeting Sunday, January 5th Great Bend - Centerline Aviation Rick and Annie Schenk 1:00 pm Dish to share As 2013 is counting down it is time to remember our friends and family and those who have soared on to bluer skies. Within our aviation community we have lost many friends this year. Keep their spirit s alive and take a moment to remember your friends and their love for aviation. Lucas Campbell Rusty Woods Bill Mead Phillip Schulz I wish everyone a safe and Happy New Year.

New Ratings Phil Hathcock, Chapter Member, completed training for his commercial certificate and passed his single engine commercial checkride this December. Congrats! GBD Construction A little behind schedule, but the new ramp at Great Bend is open and operational. Beginning at the self serve fuel pumps and continuing south to the beginning of the T-hangars Great Bend has an all new concrete ramp. There are new tie downs, more than before and taxi-lines painted onto the ramp area. The tie downs are also painted in the shapes of T s. If you haven t flown in since completion come check it out. Many thanks to Martin Miller, the Great Bend Airport Manager and EAA Chapter 1134 member, for his continuing efforts to make Great Bend a great airport. Happy Flyers! Chapter Website www.eaa1134.org Visit our chapter website for your chapter information. Newsletters, officer contacts and the next meeting s location are all posted on the website. We are in the process of making updates and adding more information all the time. Marvin & Lisa Winter Tip Use caution during the winter months while taxiing on snow covered ramps. Slush and snow can accumulate in wheel pants causing damage, especially cracking when the water freezes and expands. The slush and water can also cause brakes to freeze, which doesn t end well during landing. Without wheel pants the tires kick up lots of water that makes your nice wax job not look so good. The prop can also be damaged by ice chunks or taxing over snow banks. We once had to do a prop strike inspection due to a pilot who taxied over a snow bank he didn t see, on the way over the bank the prop made contact with the ground. Another pilot flying a Twin Comanche took off on a runway with snowbanks, not until his first fuel stop did he realize that he hit one of the snowbanks with a prop during takeoff. No dents, dings, scratches of any kind, just a perfectly formed Q tip. Cold winter flying is often nice and smooth, just remember to use caution while taxing with snow, slush, or snowbanks. For Sale PA28-180 Chapter Member John George has his 1963 Piper Cherokee 180 for sale. The airplane is hangared at Great Bend, KS and has a current annual. For more information contact John at 785-623-3480. Happy Flying!

2013 EAA Chapter 1134 Report Where have we been & where are we going? EAA Chapter 1134, based in Great Bend, Kansas is a club of over 100 aviation enthusiasts. Chapter 1134 participates in the following events: Bi-Annual Great Bend Airfest: Members provide breakfast to fly-in pilots, help park aircraft, and give tours of the airport to anyone attending the Airfest. The Bi-Annual Airfest is held in the fall of every even year, making 2014 the next year for an Airfest. The 3 day event brings in about 100 flying aircraft and over 3000 people. The Commemorative Air Force offers rides in their aircraft, like the PT-23. Fly-Outs: Flying together is always worth the stories. Members often join each other on trips to Alva or Lucas for breakfast, or other airports when there is a fly-in. Joining each other in flight gives us a good reason to go fly and may bring the opportunity to bring someone new to aviation to share in the fun. If you are not sure where the weekend crowd is, call Bud, he seems to be in the know all the time. Young Eagles: Our members actively participate in the Young Eagles Program to help promote aviation in our local communities. In 2013 our chapter flew nearly 100 Young Eagle Flights. This is done by not only the pilots, but the many members needed as ground crew to coordinate flights, complete paperwork and take pictures of the Young Eagles who are experiencing aviation, possibly for the first time. Barton County Fair: During the 2012 Fair our members hosted a booth sharing information about aviation and the EAA to local fair-goers. This is an opportunity to reach out to our local community to share our experiences and passion for aviation. It is also informative for those who may be interested in learning to fly or building an airplane. This may be an event to attend again in the future. Monthly Meetings: What better time then over lunch to share our stories (or lies!), catch up with fellow aviators and hopefully find an excuse to fly. Our chapter meets on the first Sunday of each month either at the Great Bend Airport or a member s home airport. This is a great opportunity to get to know our fellow members and a place for new members to get started. Stearman Committee: This committee, currently lead by Michael Yagel and Steve Dyer, is designed to nurture aviation in our local community. By getting support from EAA headquarters our local chapter can continue to outreach our community and increase aviation. 2014: What are your 2014 aviation goals? Not an active member, it s never to late to come join the fun and find friendship with those who have the same passion for aviation. Are there any events you would like to attend or participate in?
