Idaho Unit of WBCCI A WORD FROM OUR PRESIDENT this month we will start with a riddle what am I? Some scholars say I am an illusion, something that does not exist; yet I can be measured, spent, killed, made, kept or wasted. I can fly, you might not have enough of me, or you could have too much of me on your hands, what am I. The word this month is Time. Time to prepare our Airstreams for another season of travel and exploration with our WBCCI family. Time to pack wheel bearings and flush the antifreeze from the pipes, check the air pressure in the tires and their age. But wait, we have a large number of our members who spend the winter months using their Airstreams as much or more than during the summer. Maybe the time to check the maintenance of our Airstreams is every time; before we leave home, the campsite, the RV park, even some items should be checked every time we stop. This isn t an article on maintenance, but it is about time. Time to register for Rallies and Caravans; check out the Rally schedule in this month s Newsletter, and get those reservation coupons returned as soon as possible. We are looking forward to spending some time with you this year! Speaking of time flying; it was just three years ago this month that Kathleen and I bought our first Airstream. Little did we know when we pulled that trailer from between the houses, what lay ahead. We are constantly amazed how much we have experienced and far we have come in such a short time. Thank you for allowing us to travel this time with you! This month we are recognizing our Safety committee chair, Fonny Davidson. While most of us could be categorized as either right brained or left brained, Fonny is one of those rare individuals that is both, and can use both sides at the same time. Fonny s experience with Airstreams started with an Argosy, and like every Argosy owner I have met, Fonny is more than happy to explain how an Argosy is better than an Airstream in many ways. So often safety is a function of maintenance and preparation. Fonny has been great about researching and providing information that makes sense, helps to keep us safe and worry-free. Fonny, thank you for your role as Safety committee chair, and for all you bring to our Unit! See you down the road...michael Archer Who s that cat in the hat? Didn t we already have a presence in that world? Yes - our Facebook page, Airstream - Idaho WBCCI Unit #035, was created some time ago. But we found that folks could not share information. We wanted it to be more friendly So we did some research - and learned that a page is designed to act more like a bulletin board. The administrators post messages and the public can read them. Our new group allows members to share their photos and stories more easily. It encourages conversations. We hope you will like Idaho Airstream WBCCI. 2
Member News: On Monday, February 29 th our fellow WBCCI member Jim Rankin passed away. He will be missed by many. Jim had been battling cancer for a couple years, and was recently in the ICU at the VA hospital. The pneumonia and heart issues, combined with the lasting effects of chemotherapy, were more than he could overcome. Jim served WBCCI and the Sun Valley Jazz Festival in many roles, all with the same devotion and energy that he served his country through his career in the Air Force. Jim is survived by his wife Debi, daughters Kerrie Wolfley & Heather Rankin, sons Jason & Joshua Rankin and their families. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:45 pm at the Idaho State Veteran s Cemetery in Boise on March 21st, 2016. A reception (potluck) at Debi and Jim's home (10285 West La Honton, Boise) will immediately follow the services. ********************************************************************************************************************************************************* Membership Notes We currently have 59 member families, including 1 Affiliate. What is an affiliate? This is a WBCCI member who joins more than 1 unit and their main unit is not ours. Affiliates pay their International dues through their primary unit. Then they pay Unit dues to each additional unit they join. One benefit of being a WBCCI member is that we can participate in any event in any unit or region just by signing up for it. I think it is quite a statement of support when members join another unit as an affiliate. Twenty members, including 3 Affiliates, did not renew at the end of 2015. Some transferred to the new Utah Wasatch unit. Some felt that distance or work requirements limited their participation too much. Age and mobility were factors for others. Not all gave reasons. My guess is that many of the families who did not renew had been members for 2 years or less, had not attended a rally or caravan, and did not feel connected. I am reminded how important it is for us to reach out to new members and distant members. WBCCI is diverse and that is part of what works. We combine ages, professions, economic status, regional locations, and more. Our founder s dream was to encourage clubs and rallies that provide an endless source of friendships, travel fun and personal expressions. Together, we make it happen. Thank you for all you do! ~Mim Davidson, Membership Chair Mim Davidson, Membership Chair 3!

Member Spotlight Bill and Sharon Lawrence Here are the questions i asked... How long have you been members? 10 years, we joined in 2006. What kind of Airstream do you have? Have you ever owned any other trailers/airstreams? We have a 28-foot Classic. We've had two Bambi's: a 19 International and a 20 Safari. What's the best part of being an Airstreamer? Going places we've never been before with a bunch of great friends. Why did you join/who asked you to join the club? Although we had been researching and wanting an Airstream, we didn't know about WBCCI. We were picking up our trailer at the dealer and by coincidence the Unit was having an event there that day. We believe the dealer paid our dues and we were members right away. There were a few years we didn't participate much but after we both retired in 2012 we became more active. What have been your favorite trips/rallies as a part of the club? Our favorite trip was the 2012 "Autumn with the Anasazi" caravan, and we've really enjoyed the Sun Valley Jazz Festival rallies. Ketchum is a fantastic destination in the Autumn; the music is outstanding and it'll be even better with the new format. We also enjoyed the Urban Rally on the Grove in Boise a couple of years ago. Any places that we haven't gone as a club that you would recommend to others? (campgrounds, parks, etc) We've heard there's a nice new RV park, Canyon Springs, near the Notus/Parma exit off I-84. It's close but that's OK sometimes. The group campground at Ponderosa State Park at McCall is one of the best around. It's great for kids of any age. 7!
