Thema v1.2 updates to place qualifiers This is the list of additions and updates to the Thema v1.2 qualifiers agreed by the Thema International Steering Committee during its meeting at the 2017 Frankfurt Book Fair. They concern the addition of places not yet covered by qualifiers and a few minor updates to existing codes. There are two types of new code included here. Firstly, codes based on the national qualifier model that have been included in this November 2017 update as part of Thema v1.2. Second, 32 new core codes for place qualifiers (indicated by an *) which have also been approved by the steering committee and will definitely be part of the Thema v1.3 update when this is published in 2018. This set of additions arose from the need to extend Thema s geographical qualifiers below national level. In countries where there is a national group and/or significant adoption of Thema, this falls to those stakeholders. But Thema users also need detailed geographical qualifiers for countries where there is no national group and no significant adoption so far. A working group has looked at these countries. The number of qualifiers proposed appears high, but this was always likely to be the case when adding places below country level. Even prior to these additions, there were already more than 2200 place qualifiers (and more than a third of those were accounted for by just three countries). There are around 680 new codes in the proposal. It is expected that there will be further codes in the near future perhaps in time for the 1.3 revision from New Zealand, Turkey, Finland and possibly China, Korea and Japan. For certain types of book travel guides, history and the like the highly specific nature of the proposed qualifiers is of immense value to the consumer. However, place qualifiers don t add to the complexity of the scheme in any real way, and as most of the proposed codes have been set up as national extensions, they can be ignored if they present any kind of problem. The selection of places is not arbitrary. The working group considered a much larger set of proposals which came from national groups, from individual EDItEUR members, from non-member organisations which have an interest in Thema implementation, and from its own research. The proposals have taken into account the number of books found in major international booksellers (as a measure of likely value of codes in international trade), as well as the likely level of use within a particular country s domestic publishing. Why hasn t my favourite place got a code? If it was proposed, it s because the working group judged there were not enough books in commerce at present to which that code would be appropriate. If you want to propose a new place, then this can be done at any time and evidence of hundreds of books would make a new qualifier likely to be accepted. Within the tables, additions are in red, any changes and clarifications in teal and unchanged text is in black. Green indicates additions that will only be included in the Thema v1.3 update in 2018.
