Adriatic and Italy Mediterranean Cruise August 27 th to September 10 th, 2018 14 nights 15 days Summary Itinerary Monday, August 27 th Day 1 Depart Canada Depart from your Maritime city on your overnight flight to Venice via Montreal or Toronto with your Tour Director. Try and get some sleep before your morning arrival in Venice. A light meal and breakfast will be served on board the flight. Tuesday, August 28 th Day 2 Transfer to Venice (L,D) Arrive at Venice airport and gather our luggage. Meet our local guide for a transfer by boat to Venice. Light lunch on arrival at the hotel. Balance of day is free to explore. Try your best to stay up and busy to get adjusted to the time zone. Our Tour Director will have a planned activity (TBD) you can join on this day should you wish. Join the group tonight for a welcome dinner at a local restaurant. Wednesday, August 29 th Day 3 Tour Venice Enjoy a complimentary breakfast and meet your Tour Director. After breakfast, meet our private guide for a Classic Venice Tour. Since ancient times it has been a place extraordinarily rich in historical and artistic value. We shall visit St. Mark s Square, the Basilica with its precious mosaics, Doge s Palace (Outside) with its well-known Bridge of Sighs, the Procuratie palaces and the Napoleonic Wing, the Clock Tower, the Campanile and the Marciana National Library. Lunch on your own. Afternoon is free to explore on your own. This evening, we will have a Gondola ride at 6:00 pm. The tour begins at Bacino Orseolo just behind Saint Mark s Square, following smaller but unbelievably beautiful secondary canals such as Rio dei Barcaioli where the home where Mozart lived is located, and Rio dell Ovo to reach the Grand Canal. From here, to your right you will enjoy the spectacular view of the Rialto Bridge from the water, and to your left imposing palazzi such as Ca Farsetti, seat of the municipal government, and Palazzo Grimani, the largest building overlooking the Grand Canal and which now hosts the Court of Appeals. The tour continues down Rio San Luca where it passes Palazzo Manin, residence of the last doge of Venice, Ludovico Manin, and today the Bank of Italy s Regional headquarters building, before returning to end again at Bacino Orseolo. Thursday, August 30 th Day 4 All aboard the Celebrity Constellation Enjoy a complimentary breakfast and meet your Tour Director. This morning we transfer to Venice harbour with private boat, via Grand Canal. We leave near the hotel, with our private boat taxi, and we will reach the port of Venice along the Grand Canal, where you can admire the majestic Venetian Palaces. Separate transfer for the luggage will be organized from the Hotel directly to the Ship. The Celebrity Constellation sails at 4:30 pm. Friday, August 31 st Day 5 Koper, Slovenia 7:00 am to 4:00 pm Located in southwest Slovenia on the Adriatic Sea, Koper in a picturesque port town with a compact, medieval center. Against a backdrop of the Alps, the area is enriched with several 15th Century Venetian Gothic palaces, castles and spires. Nearby, the breathtaking Postojna Caves can be toured on foot and by electric train. The recreational area north across Koper Bay is ideal for hiking, horseback riding and cycling. If you so choose, take a day trip to Bled, a town popular with tourists as it resembles something out of a Disney movie with it s castle on an island in the middle of the lake. Saturday, September 1 st Day 6 Dubrovnik, Croatia 12:00 pm to 10:00 pm Established 1,300 years ago on the far southern tip of the Dalmatian Coast, this city once rivaled Venice in terms of its importance. Take a walking tour to the Dominican Monastery and marvel at the finest collection of Renaissance paintings, including a painting by Titian. Sunday, September 2 nd Day 7 Kotor, Montenegro 7:00 am to 6:00 pm Kotor offers some of the most well-preserved architecture in all the Adriatic coast, with landmarks such as the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon. Built in 1166, there are frescoes dating back hundreds of years, and much of the gold and silver relief work done by the city s master craftsmen of that time are held for safe keeping within its walls. Surrounded by mountains this port will be a memorable one to wake up in. Monday, September 3 rd Day 8 At Sea This day is yours to do as much or as little as you like. Thursday, September 6 th Day 11 Catania, Sicily, Italy 7:00 am to 4:00 pm Located on the east coast of Sicily, Catania is situated at the foot of the largest volcano in Europe, Mount Etna. Elegant, modern, and an important hub in Europe s tech industry, Catania is also rich with baroque architecture, medieval castles, Roman era theatres, and a flourishing cultural and artistic center. The first university in Sicily was opened here in 1434. The Ursino castle built in the 13th Century is now a museum. The Piazza del Duomo, at the heart of Catania, is home to the city s symbolic Fountain of the Elephant, constructed in 1736 from lava and an ancient Egyptian obelisk. Friday, September 7 th Day 12 Naples, Italy 7:00 am to 6:00 pm Framed by Mount Vesuvius along a dramatic skyline, the 2,800 year-old port city of Naples is chock full of historical sites, churches, and museums that make it an incredible place for you to explore. And in the region where pizza was first invented, you know the food is going to be incredible. Just 35 miles down the coast, Salerno offers you a rich history but also boasts a marvelous collection of parks, natural wonders, and unique vantage points to take in the beauty of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Saturday, September 8 th Day 13 Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy 5:00 am (L,D) Civitavecchia was settled in 108 A.D. by the Emperor Trajan and has since served faithfully as a gateway to the capital of the Empire Rome. Once the center of the Ancient World from which emperors ruled over nearly all of western civilization, Rome is still a cultural mecca. Stroll the ancient halls of the Colosseum or gaze upon the ceilings of the Sistine Chapel. Meet our local guide for a private coach transfer to Rome. Light lunch at the hotel on arrival. This afternoon we will have a walking tour of the historical centre of Rome. We start this enchanting walk from the Quirinal, the highest of Rome's 7 hills and the one where ancient Romans and later the Popes built their residences. We reach the Trevi Fountain, the most majestic of the Roman fountains. We will see the Spanish Steps. The square is named after the Palace, the seat of the first European Embassy established in the city permanently, and the famous flight of steps. Walking around the most elegant shopping streets in Rome, we reach Piazza Navona, the most Baroque of the Roman squares. We continue to the Pantheon, dating back to the II cent a.d.. Our last stop will be in piazza Campo de' Fiori, the popular centre of the city and Piazza Farnese with its twin fountains made of two marble basins from Caracalla Baths. This morning we will have a tour of Ancient Rome. Step back into antiquity during a 3-hours stroll through the archaeological sites. Visit the Roman forum, the forum of Caesar Augustus and Trajan, the Capitol, Colosseum and Palatine Hill. Let the magic of ancient Rome archaeological marvels cast its spell. Marc Antony on the rostra, the stones of Caesar's cremation site, assembled senators in the Curia, vestal virgins meditating in the romantic surroundings of their home and the eternal fire burning in Vesta's temple. Also see Rome s most cherished shrine, Cicero's flaming oratory in the Rome's basilicas and the wild atmosphere of gladiator games in the Colosseum, will all seem to materialize.
