Background: Peatlands use Planning process Education and public awareness

Mires of Tierra del Fuego, Argentina Tierra del Fuego island is located at the south of the Magallanes strait, 53-55 Lat. S 270.000 Ha of different types of peatlands TIERRA DEL FUEGO Lago Fagnano

Main problems Peatlands are included in the National Mining law as minerals of 2nd category. Peat harvesting is a growing activity carried out for many years without any order Peatlands were managed mainly as mines

But Peatlands are Wetlands

Why to order peatlands use Peatlands are wetlands (international agreements) Ecosystems of high enviromental value Peatlands are second category mines. (ac. to Mining Law) Resource used by productive sector Need of integrated management Participative planning process Creation of the Commission for Peatlands use planning

Background: The planning process Workshop Conservation of ecosystems at global level, with emphasys in Tierra del Fuego mires, march 2000 (CADIC-SDSyA Greisfwald Univ.) Temas Workshop Cathment regulated by peatlands, March 2004, SDSyA Greisfwald Univ. IMCG Field Symposium in Tierra del Fuego- Dic 2005. Main Stakeholders Temas Who participated of the process: Managers from National (Env., Water, RAMSAR Focal point) and provincial Goverments (Mining, Environment, Water Resources, Protected Areas, Forest, Land use planning, etc.). Scientists from Universities: UNPSJB, UBA, Greisfwald and research Institutes: CONICET, INTA. TECHNICAL Workshop 2010 Temas Defining Planning criteria for the wise use of mires

Inputs of IMCG Statement (2005) to the Strategy and Action Plan (2008) Inmediate actions for the protection of Andorra and Rancho Hambre peatlands. Legal status protection to Peninsula Mitre Development and implementation of a Strategy and Action Plan for the wise use of peatlands Inventory of peatlands, protection of natural values of important mires, formulation of legislation to formalise such protection Programmes for public awareness, education and ecotourism. Development of expertise and the knowledgebase necessary to inform the planning process Obligatory Environmental Impact Assessment using the IPS/IMCG Wise Use Guidelines. Implementation of restoration measures for degraded peatlands
