Shankitunk History 1927: Camp opened with 41 members attending. Virginia Ostrich of Walton won a free week at camp. She named the camp Shankitunk, meaning woody place. 1933: a week at camp only cost $7 1935: Camp cost was raised to $8 1938: New Recreational Hall (Craft Hall) was added by National Youth Administration 1943: Enrollments were the highest ever with 204 attendees 1948: The cost for a single meal at camp was only $0.33 with 188 campers overall 1952: Archery was added to the class list 1960: Schoharie County 4-H members joined, as there was no camp in their county 1961: Camp fee rose to $14 1963l: A new dining hall, units 1 and 2, and a staff house were brought to campus from Delhi Tech 1964: The tradition of a Wednesday night Barbeque was begun 1975: Camp transitioned to a co-ed place 1977: Shankitunk celebrated its 50th anniversary, and a new Rec Hall was built by the Walton National Guard and dedicated to John Lennox 1982: Camp fee rose again, to $60 per week 1985: A fifth week was added to the schedule 1988: The Rice Hall was dedicated to Jim Rice 1991: Camp fee was brought up to $100 per week 1998: Advanced Backpacking was offered as a class 1999: Gladstone Science Center was opened 2002: Shankitunk celebrated its 75th anniversary 2005: Camp fee was raised to $200 per week 2010: Wilderness Survival was added as a class 2012: Day camp was added, and a new Craft Hall was finished
